Instead, culturally alert counseling consists of intentionally adapting existing ways to help clients (1) understand their socially constructed worldviews through culture, (2) appreciate their various cultures, (3) to make choices about adherence to cultural norms, and (4) to recognize and respond to external bias relating to their cultural group membership.

Book excerpt: This study explored interpersonal trust, racial identity, perceived racism, and religious orientation as predictors of preference for a Black counselor and cultural mistrust. The unique variance of interpersonal trust and cultural mistrust in predicting preference for a Black counselor was also explored. The relationship between cultural mistrust and interpersonal trust was tested to determine whether or not they are independent constructs. This study also examined the relationship between racial identity and religious orientation. Gender differences in religious orientation, cultural mistrust and preference for a Black counselor were examined. Previous studies provide support that cultural mistrust contributes to negative help-seeking attitudes and underutilization of mental health services. Researchers have identified racial identity and perceived racism as correlates to and/or predictors of cultural mistrust and preference for a Black counselor (Whaley, 2001). This study involved participants recruited in part from the Educational Psychology (EDP) Subject Pool at The University of Texas at Austin (UT). Participants were also recruited from five student organizations at UT. Participants completed the survey using an online survey tool or a paper copy of the survey. One stratum was used for selection of participants: students who racially identify as African-American or Black. Results of the study revealed interpersonal trust as a significant predictor of preference for a Black counselor. However, exploratory analyses indicated that cultural mistrust served as the sole predictor of Black counselor preference when seeking a counselor for dealing with racial concerns. Interpersonal trust, immersion-emersion anti-white racial identity attitudes (IEAW) and extrinsic religious orientation were significant predictors of cultural mistrust. Results also indicated a positive relationship between Internalization Multiculturalist (IMCI) racial identity attitudes and intrinsic religious orientation. A negative correlation was found to exist between intrinsic religious orientation and IEAW. High cultural mistrust levels were also positively associated with high IEAW attitudes. Additionally, a small, yet statistically significant negative relationship was found to exist between cultural mistrust and interpersonal trust. Cultural mistrust did not account for a significant amount of variance above that of interpersonal trust in predicting preference for a Black counselor. Finally, no mean sex differences were found among levels of Black counselor preference, cultural mistrust, and intrinsic or extrinsic religious orientation. Exploratory analyses also revealed a positive relationship between cultural mistrust and seven out of ten scenarios for Black counselor preference. Individuals with a preference for a Black counselor reported higher levels of cultural mistrust related to issues concerning: excessive worry/anxiety, drinking too much alcohol/using drugs, relationship problems, feelings of harassment/feeling threatened, sexual issues, racial issues, and difficulty controlling anger. Results of the study bear implications for understanding cultural mistrust and interpersonal trust as it relates to counselor preference. Implications for counselors are also discussed regarding the intersection of racial and religious identities. Limitations and future directions for research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined cultural mistrust, racial identity and masculinity as influences on the attitudes of African American males toward psychotherapy. The sample consisted of 101 African American male undergraduate and graduate students. Participants completed the Cultural Mistrust Inventory (CMI), Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (RIAS-B), Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) Gender Role Conflict Scale (GCRS) and Attitudes toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale (ATSPPH). Pearson r correlations indicated a significant relationship between racial identity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.314), but no significant correlation between cultural mistrust and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.184), nor between masculinity and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help (r =-.045, .010, -.225). A regression analysis, with cultural mistrust, racial identity and masculinity as predictor variables and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help as the criterion, indicated no significant predictors (R=.135, R2=.060). Limitations of this study, as well as implications and recommendations for future research and practice, are discussed.

Book excerpt: Viewing media coverage of violent acts committed against Black individuals (i.e., police violence and other racially motivated violence) can lead to distressing mental health impacts including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress symptoms. While several cognitive-behavioral and acceptance-based therapy techniques may help therapists to support Black clients in these moments, little is known about how these interventions are perceived by prospective therapy clients. Acceptability of these interventions may also differ by therapist race, and Black individuals of differing identities and with life experiences may hold different views. This therapy analogue study included N = 179 Black adult participants recruited in the Albany, NY area and through social media who completed an online survey. Participants were randomized to view one of four videos of a simulated therapist-client interaction: a White therapist using cognitive restructuring (n = 40), a White therapist using value-guided action (n = 45), a Black therapist using cognitive restructuring (n = 36), or a Black therapist using value-guided action (n = 51). Participants provided ratings of their perceptions of the therapist, the therapist’s credibility, and expectancies for therapy. Contrary to hypotheses, there were no significant between-group differences between therapist race and intervention conditions on these dimensions. However, some participant characteristics including age, racial identity centrality and public regard, and exposure to media coverage were associated with differing perceptions of the therapist. Among participants for whom media coverage of anti-Black violence was a more salient issue, the White therapist was perceived more positively in the cognitive restructuring condition than the values condition. These results suggest that culturally responsive cognitive restructuring, as well as value-guided action, can be effective interventions for patients coping with racial trauma symptoms after viewing anti-Black violence media coverage.
