Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Soybean Insect Pests is the first book in a new series from the Entomological Society of America that examines pest management from all angles—magnifying practical field strategies for growers—and updates growers on the latest protection techniques—preventing needless crop loss as a result of outdated pest control procedures. Edited by Leon G. Higley and David J. Boethel, this book outlines fundamental approaches to soybean pest management that can aid in reducing crop damage and loss. It provides detailed descriptions of topics such as insect identification, life-history data, and management options. This comprehensive guide includes discussions on soybean ecology and physiology, soybean insect pests, predators and parasitoids, soybean pest management procedures, noninsect soybean pests, and insect management. Also included are 92 color photographs, 200 illustrations, a directory of resources for obtaining local information, and a glossary.

Book Synopsis Pest Management in Soybean by : L.G. Copping
Download or read book Pest Management in Soybean written by L.G. Copping and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-06-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series of volumes on major tropical and sub-tropical crops. These books aim to review the current state of the art in management of the total spectrum of pests and diseases which affect these crops in each major growing area using a multi-disciplinary approach. Soybean is economically the most important legume in the world. It is nutritious and easily digested, and is one of the richest and cheapest sources of protein. It is currently vital for the sustenance of many people and it will play an integral role in any future attempts to relieve world hunger. Soybean seed contains about 17% of oil and about 63% of meal, half of which is protein. Modern research has developed a variety of uses for soybean oil. It is processed into margarine, shortening, mayonnaise, salad creams and vegetarian cheeses. Industrially it is used in resins, plastics, paints, adhesives, fertilisers, sizing for cloth, linoleum backing, fire extinguishing materials, printing inks and a variety of other products. Soybean meal is a high-protein meat substitute and is used in the developed countries in many processed foods, including baby foods, but mainly as a feed for livestock. Soybean (Glycine max), which evolved from Glycine ussuriensis, a wild legume native to northern China, has been known and used in China since the eleventh century Be. It was introduced into Europe in the eighteenth century and into the United States in 1804 as an ornamental garden plant in Philadelphia.

Merr written by Mary Kathryn Huff and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to refine and validate the soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) threshold in Mississippi soybeans, Glycine max. (L.) Merr. Equivalencies between sweep net and drop cloth sampling methods were evaluated, overall the sweep net was more effective at capturing soybean looper larvae greater than third instar and larvae less than or equal to third instar when compared to the drop cloth method. Feeding studies were conducted to determine the feeding rates of each instar, results showed that fifth instar larvae consume the greatest amount of leaf tissue, and larvae greater than or equal to third instar consume more leaf tissue than larvae less than third instar. Observed and expected/predicted defoliation rates were calculated. Observed defoliation was lower than predicted defoliation possibly due to field environmental conditions. Using data in combination with published data from other studies, three prediction models were created for the R3, R5, and R6 growth stage.
Book Synopsis Effects of Defoliation in Soybeans and Susceptibility of Soybean Loopers to Reduced Risk Insecticides by :
Download or read book Effects of Defoliation in Soybeans and Susceptibility of Soybean Loopers to Reduced Risk Insecticides written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect defoliation thresholds were reevaluated to determine their effectiveness during vegetative and reproductive stages of soybean. Field experiments were planted with maturity group IV soybeans and subjected 17, 33, 66, and 100% defoliation during R3, R5, and R6 growth stages. In addition to different amounts of defoliation for each growth stage, defoliation occurring within different portions of the plant canopy was also evaluated. Results of this experiment confirmed that soybeans during R3 and R5 stages are more susceptible to yield loss at high levels (>57%) of defoliation than R6 growth stage. However, yield loss was not significantly different below 57% defoliation. No significant yield difference was observed from defoliation occurring in the top or bottom part of the canopy. Yield loss from various levels of defoliation during the vegetative stages was significant at V6. No yield loss was observed from defoliation during the V3 growth stage. Both maturity group IV and V soybeans behaved similarly to each level of defoliation. Results from these experiments were used to determine dynamic economic injury levels for each growth stage based on yield loss equations, value of the crop, and cost of control and can be used to make insecticide application recommendations based on the amount of defoliation at a particular reproductive growth stage. Soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens (Walker), is an economic pest of soybeans that has developed resistance to several insecticide classes. New insecticides have recently been labeled for control of lepidopteran pests in soybeans, including soybean loopers. Field reference strains were collected in 2010 and 2011 from soybean fields in Mississippi and Louisiana and subjected to insecticide incorporated diet treated with flubendiamide, chlorantraniliprole, and methoxyfenozide. Susceptibility of soybean loopers to flubendiamide and chlorantraniliprole did not differ. However the overall susceptibility to methoxyfenozide was greater than chlorantraniliprole. Diet incorporated assays determined a 9.4 fold variation in susceptibility to flubendiamide among the seven soybean looper populations tested. Variation to chlorantraniliprole was 6.25 fold and variation for methoxyfenozide was 5.37 fold. These data can be used as a benchmark for referencing future soybean looper populations in Mississippi and Louisiana.

Book Synopsis The Biology of Entomophthora Gammae and Its Effect on Populations of the Soybean Looper, Pseudoplusia Includens, in South Carolina by : GARY GRANT NEWMAN Newman

This book was released on 1975 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larval populations of Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) were monitored on soybeans and sweet potatoes in 1973 and on soybeans in 1974. Mortality was caused by the pathogens Entomophthora gammae (Weiser), Nomuraea rileyi (Farlow) Samson, and a nuclear polyhedrosis virus; and the parasitoids Copidosoma truncatellum (Dalman) and Lespesia alletiae (Riley). When looper populations were high, E. gammae was the most important natural control agent, often causing disease incidence exceeding 70%. In fields where looper populations were low, incidence of E. gammae was reduced. Incidence of E. gammae infection was higher in loopers collected by the sweep-net method of sampling than in those collected by the plant-shake method. Incidence of N. rileyi was not significantly different in larvae collected by the two sampling methods. The conidial form of E. gammae killed its host in 4 days at temperatures approximating those in the field. The resting spore form had an incubation period of 5 to 8 days. Larvae infected with the conidial form of the pathogen died within a rather precise time period of the early evening (6-10 PM). Sporulation began on fresh cadavers just prior to midnight and continued until after dawn. Larvae infected with the resting spore form died at various times. As field epizootics of E. gammae progressed, high numbers of the conidial form gave way to high numbers of the resting spore form. Ratios of conidia to resting spores were not significantly altered when infected larvae were exposed to shortened photoperiod or to cooler temperatures. Size or age of infected larvae appeared to influence spore development, conidia being predominant in small larvae (>1.5cm) and resting spores in large larvae (
