Book excerpt: The prevalence of obesity in children has dramatically increased over the last few decades and physical inactivity has been identified as a main contributor. Schools are an ideal setting for children to engage in physical activity. Unfortunately, opportunities for children to participate in physical activity during the school day have decreased as more emphasis has been placed on academic work. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a before school physical activity program on elementary school-aged children's physical activity levels and on-task behavior. The First-Class Activity Program (First-Class) was implemented utilizing the HOPSports Training System. HOPSports is an interactive multi-media system that utilizes DVR technology to engage large numbers of students in physical activity. Physical activity levels were measured with accelerometers and on-task behavior was observed at three different time periods (i.e., baseline, intervention, post-intervention). Twenty-seven students attended the program during the intervention data collection period. During First-Class, children spent an average of 46.4% of time in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Repeated measures analyses of variance were conducted to examine differences in physical activity and on-task behavior between baseline, intervention, and post-intervention for varying intensity levels (i.e., sedentary behavior, and light, moderate, vigorous, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity). Book excerpt: As childhood obesity rises in the United States, so does the need for effective, sustainable physical activity interventions. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of an early morning care program as well as determine the program's effects on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during the program and outside of school, parental support for physical activity, media-based screen time, and classroom on-task behavior. Two schools were recruited for participation; one received a six-week experimental early morning care program (ES) while the other continued their usual morning program (CS). Eleven students were recruited at the ES (mean age = 7.9 ± 2.0 yrs, 86% female, mean BMI = 62.7 ± 27.2) and six were recruited at the CS (mean age = 8.2 ± 1.5 yrs, 80% female, mean BMI = 67.8 ± 11.6). Physical activity was monitored objectively using Actigraph GT1M accelerometers before school in both groups and for 7 full days at baseline and at the end of the program. Parental support, media-based screen time, and on-task behavior were also measured at these time points. The results of the process evaluation demonstrated that an early morning care program is feasible with 90% of the planned sessions being implemented. By the fourth week of the program, though not significant, children in the ES group spent a greater percentage of time in MVPA on "program days" compared to "non-program days" (p > 0.05). No significant differences were seen in physical activity outside of school, parental support, or media-based screen time in either group (p > 0.05). The experimental early morning care program did not have deleterious effects on classroom-on task behavior. In conclusion, a simple, inexpensive intervention to increase physical activity seems to be a feasible during early morning care without negatively affecting on-task behavior. Although the results of the current study are promising, more research is needed to determine the effects of such a program on physical activity levels during early morning care. It is also apparent that different strategies are needed to influence parental support, media-based screen time, and physical activity levels outside of school. It may not be feasible to influence these behaviors during early morning care alone.

Schools are ideal physical activity promotion sites but school physical activity opportunities have decreased due the increased focus on academic performance. Before-school programs provide a good opportunity for children to engage in physical activity as well as improve their readiness to learn. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a before-school running/walking club on children's physical activity and on-task behavior. Methods: Participants were third and fourth grade children from two schools in the southwestern United States who participated in a before-school running/walking club that met two times each week. The study employed a two-phase experimental design with an initial baseline phase and an alternating treatments phase. Physical activity was monitored using pedometers and on-task behavior was assessed through systematic observation. Data analysis included visual analysis, descriptive statistics, as well as multilevel modeling. Results: Children accumulated substantial amounts of physical activity within the before-school program (School A: 1731 steps, 10:02 MVPA minutes; School B: 1502 steps, 8:30 MVPA minutes) and, on average, did not compensate by decreasing their physical activity during the rest of the school day. Further, on-task behavior was significantly higher on days the children attended the before-school program than on days they did not (School A=15.78%, pseudo-R2=.34 [strong effect]; School B=14.26%, pseudo-R2=.22 [moderate effect]). Discussion: Results provide evidence for the positive impact of before-school programs on children's physical activity and on-task behavior. Such programs do not take time away from academics and may be an attractive option for schools.

Knight Chair: Matthew T. Mahar, Ed.D. Department of Kinesiology: Activity Promotion Laboratory Regular physical activity is important for everybody, but may be especially beneficial for children. Despite this, most children in the United States do not meet physical activity recommendations. Schools are a prime location for targeting the physical activity levels of children given their ability to reach many children in one accessible and safe location. Unfortunately, schools provide limited opportunities for children to be active during the school day as pressures increase to focus more on academic work. Cutting physical activity time during the school day may have a negative impact on children's physical and mental health. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a simple, low-cost physical activity program before school on third-grade children's physical activity levels, musculoskeletal fitness, and cognitive function. Methods: Physical activity was measured daily at the 10-week program using pedometers. Physical activity during the school day was measured by accelerometers for one week while the program was in session and for one week after the program ended. Musculoskeletal fitness was measured using four tests during early and late intervention. Cognitive function was assessed at the beginning of the program on a day children did not attend the before-school activity program, and near the end of the program on a day children spent at least 10 minutes engaged in physical activity at the program. Results: Twenty-eight children attended the program for 30 or more days, for an average of 17.4 (℗ł 1.8) minutes per day. According to pedometer data, over the course of the program children took an average of 987 (℗ł 344) steps and were active at a rate of 58.6 (℗ł 20.8) steps per minute each day at the before school program. Children did not become less active as the program went on, but rather took significantly more steps in mid-intervention and late intervention than in early intervention. Accelerometer data collected during four days of the program showed that participants spent 22.1 (℗ł 8.5) percent of their time at the program in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. On days that participants attended the program, they spent slightly more time in light, moderate, and vigorous physical activity and took more steps per minute on average during the school day than they did on days after the program was over. Participants also spent less time in sedentary behavior on school days when they attended the before school program versus days without the program, suggesting that students did not compensate on days they were active at the program by being less active during the school day. No differences were seen from early to late intervention in any of the musculoskeletal fitness tests. Analysis of cognitive function measures showed that participants made fewer errors on each of the three CogState assessment tests on days when they engaged in 10 minutes of physical activity at the program compared to days when they did not attend the program before taking the assessments. When participants engaged in physical activity for 10 minutes prior to CogState assessments, they made an average of 7.54 fewer errors during the Groton Maze Learning Task (ES = -0.26), 2.25 fewer errors during the One Back Task (ES = -0.27), and 33.35 fewer errors during the Continuous Paired Associate Learning Task (ES = -0.51) than on days when they did not attend the program before taking assessments. When participants took the assessments after 10 minutes of activity, reaction time did not change significantly (mean of the log10 transformed reaction time, 2.96 ℗ł 0.18 vs. 2.95 ℗ł 0.14, ES = -0.04). Conclusions: This study suggests that a low-cost, before school physical activity program can positively impact certain domains of cognitive function, including attention, working memory, spatial memory, and executive function. Also, providing children with an opportunity to be active before the school day may help them accumulate more physical activity and spend less time in sedentary behavior during the school day, which may lead to an increase in overall physical activity and associated physical and mental health benefits.
