Book Synopsis Effective Implementation of the Design-build Delivery System on Transportation Projects by : Awad S. Hanna
Download or read book Effective Implementation of the Design-build Delivery System on Transportation Projects written by Awad S. Hanna and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of design-build project delivery systems today is popular for delivering commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects and is increasingly used on transportation projects. While some states have used design-build to deliver transportation projects for over a decade, others have little to no experience with this method and have not yet established any legislation to use design-build. Design-build has been shown to shorten the duration of a project as compared to the design-bid-build traditional delivery method, together with increasing cost certainty and without sacrificing quality. While these benefits make design-build a very attractive delivery system, its implementation is not always as easy. This report combines the knowledge from existing literature as well as Departments of Transportation (DOTs) from around the United States familiar with design-build to form an overview of the entire implementation process including: passing legislation, choosing appropriate projects, overcoming the barriers specific to design-build, selecting the best design-build team, and conditions for successful implementation. By being aware of the barriers to implementing design-build and how to best deal with them, DOTs can use this delivery method effectively, taking advantage of its benefits.

Book Synopsis A Guidebook for Selecting Airport Capital Project Delivery Methods by : Ali Touran
Download or read book A Guidebook for Selecting Airport Capital Project Delivery Methods written by Ali Touran and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2009 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes various project delivery methods for major airport capital projects. The guidebook also evaluates the impacts, advantages, and disadvantages of these various project delivery methods. The project delivery methods discussed include design-bid-build (DBB), construction manager at risk (CMR), and design-build (DB). The guidebook offers a two-tiered project delivery selection framework that may be used by owners of airport projects to evaluate the pros and cons of each delivery method and select the most appropriate method for their project. Tier 1 is an analytical delivery decision approach that is designed to help the user understand the attributes of each project delivery method and whether the delivery method is appropriate for their specific circumstance. Tier 2 uses a weighted-matrix delivery decision approach that allows users to prioritize their objectives and, based on the prioritized objectives, select the delivery method that is best suited for their project. The report will be helpful to airports with determining the most appropriate project delivery methods (e.g., DBB, DB, or CMR) for various types of airport capital projects.

Book Synopsis Accelerating Transportation Project and Program Delivery by : Dennis Keck
Download or read book Accelerating Transportation Project and Program Delivery written by Dennis Keck and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2010 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NCHRP Report 662 describes how selected transportation agencies have reduced the time required to complete the project delivery process. This process takes new or renewed transportation facilities and services from conception to completion, ready for users. Project delivery is a primary indicator of an agency's effectiveness. Individual highway and other transportation projects are developed under programs intended to implement agency and legislative initiatives and other public policy. The way programs are organized and managed can determine the speed and efficiency of project development. Accelerating program functions can speed up project delivery. This report describes the experiences of eight state departments of transportation (DOTs) that made improvements in their project delivery and the lessons to be learned from their experiences. The information will be useful to DOT managers seeking to ensure that their agencies' organization, policies, and program operations facilitate project delivery.

Book Synopsis Construction Manager-at-risk Project Delivery for Highway Programs by : Douglas D. Gransberg
Download or read book Construction Manager-at-risk Project Delivery for Highway Programs written by Douglas D. Gransberg and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2010 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 402: Construction Manager-at-Risk Project Delivery for Highway Programs explores current methods in which state departments of transportation and other public engineering agencies are applying construction manager-at-risk (CMR) project delivery to their construction projects. CMR project delivery is an integrated team approach to the planning, design, and construction of a highway project, to help control schedule and budget, and to help ensure quality for the project owner. The team consists of the owner; the designer, who might be an in-house engineer; and the at-risk construction manager. The goal of this project delivery method is to engage at-risk construction expertise early in the design process to enhance constructability, manage risk, and facilitate concurrent execution of design and construction without the owner relinquishing control over the details of design as it would in a design-build project.
