Book Synopsis Effect of Ultraviolet Irradiation on Selected Plastic Films in Vacuum by : Evelyn Anagnostou
Download or read book Effect of Ultraviolet Irradiation on Selected Plastic Films in Vacuum written by Evelyn Anagnostou and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected plastic films which had possible application as encapsulants for thin-film cadmium sulfide solar cells were irradiated in vacuum by ultraviolet light below 3000 angstroms for various lengths of time up to 5266 hours. The light intensity was between 0.67 and 1 times the integrated solar intensity below 3000 angstroms at 1 astronomical unit. The change in optical trans-mission with irradiation time was measured from 0.35 to 2.7 microns, and changes in percent elongation and breaking strength were measured at room temperature. Of the films tested, the most resistant to damage was H-film, a polyimide, and weather-durable Mylar was the next most resistant.

Book Synopsis Influence of Uv Radiation and Vacuum on Strength and Destruction of Polymer Films by : L. M. Polyakov
Download or read book Influence of Uv Radiation and Vacuum on Strength and Destruction of Polymer Films written by L. M. Polyakov and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of UV radiation on the mechanical properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) films was studied. The changes were noted in tensile strength and deformation, and the formation of defects, i.e., cracking. The samples used were strips of PETP film, 6 mm wide, 20 mm long and 10 microns thick. The irradiated samples were subjected to tensile strength tests on a special machine. It was found that open cracks developed on the irradiated side of the samples if the irradiation took place in air. Vacuum-irradiated samples developed cracks only on deformation during the tensile test. A weakening of molecular bonds during the irradiation was assumed. Cracking began at definite stresses and deformation which decreased with an increase in the radiation dose. The tensile strength and plasticity of the irradiated films decrease with an increase in the duration of irradiation. The air-irradiated samples display a higher loss in tensile strength than the vacuum-irradiated samples, which suffer a higher loss in plasticity. Vacuum-irradiated samples form no visible defects on the surface: their surface remains smooth even after rupture of the sample. (Author).

Book Synopsis Flexible and Stretchable Electronic Composites by : Deepalekshmi Ponnamma
Download or read book Flexible and Stretchable Electronic Composites written by Deepalekshmi Ponnamma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive collection of electronic aspects of different kinds of elastomer composites, including combinations of synthetic, natural and thermoplastic elastomers with different conducting fillers like metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, or graphenes, and many more. It covers elastomer composites, which are useful in electronic applications, including chemical and physical as well as material science aspects. The presented elastomer composites have great potential for solving emerging new material application requirements, for example as flexible and wearable electronics. The book is structured and organized by the rubber/elastomer type: each chapter describes a different elastomer matrix and its composites. While introducing to important fundamentals, it is application-oriented, discussing the current issues and challenges in the field of elastomer composites. This book will thus appeal to researchers and scientists, to engineers and technologists, but also to graduate students, working on elastomer composites, or on electronics engineering with the composites, providing the readers with a sound introduction to the field and solutions to both fundamental and applied problems.
Book Synopsis Photophysical and Photochemical Effects of UV and VUV Photo-oxidation and Photolysis on PET and PEN by : Andrew Morgan
Download or read book Photophysical and Photochemical Effects of UV and VUV Photo-oxidation and Photolysis on PET and PEN written by Andrew Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a widely used polymer in the bottling, packaging, and clothing industry. In recent years an increasing global demand for PET has taken place due to the Solar Disinfection (SODIS) process. SODIS is a method of sterilizing fresh water into drinkable water. The PET bottles are used in the process to contain the water during solar irradiation due to its highly transparent optical property. Alongside PET, polyethylene 2,6-naphthalate (PEN) is used in bottling and flexible electronic applications. The surface of PEN would need to be modified to control the hydrophilicity and the interaction it exudes as a substrate. The UV light absorption properties of PET and PEN are of great importance for many applications, and thus need to be studied along with its photochemical resistance. The optical and chemical nature of PET was studied as it was treated by UV photo-oxidation, photo-ozonation, and photolysis under atmospheric pressure. Another investigation was also used to study PEN and PET as they are treated by vacuum UV (VUV) photo-oxidation, VUV photolysis, and remote oxygen reactions. The extent of the photoreactions; effect into the depth of the polymers is examined as treatment conditions are changed. The different experimental methods established the rate of several competing photoreactions on PET and PEN during irradiance, and their effect on the optical quality of the polymers."--Abstract.
