Book excerpt: Consolidates practical guidance on the detection and remediation of soluble salt contamination prior to coating steel highway structures. Soluble salts are those that dissociate in solution into anionic and cationic components. The soluble salts referenced in this guideline are soluble in water at nominal room temperatures. Soluble salts may be transferred to a steel bridge structure as an airborne aerosol (generally from marine or industrial sources), wind-blown debris, and debris transferred from vehicles or rainwater. In many cold climates, the most common source of soluble salts on bridges is deicing materials. The report presents a brief background on soluble salts as well as information in the form of responses to a series of practical questions that an inspector, contractor, or designer may pose. Appendices B through D of the report are also available in PowerPoint format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KEY FEATURES: • This technique is growing in importance. • The first comprehensive book in this subject. A practical and comprehensive account of the technology and applications of hydroblasting, a technique used more and more in the preparation of steel and other surfaces. Steel surfaces will corrode unless they are properly prepared and coated. Such corrosion can have disastrous effects (eg bridge collapse) therefore the preparation of the surface is of major importance. Due to environmental pressure to move away from grit-blasting, high-pressure water can now be used to prepare surfaces, with few environmental costs. This book systematically and critically reviews the state of current hydroblasting technology and its applications. The book is essentially practical in nature and is written by an expert in the field.

Book excerpt: Superhydrophobic coatings have attracted substantial scientific research in recent years due to their real-world applications in a variety of fields including anti-corrosion, anti-icing, anti-fogging, oil separation and self-cleaning materials. Several approaches and methods have been used in developing superhydrophobic coatings on different substrates. This book guides readers through their fabrication and application, representing the latest significant advances in this important topic. Split into four sections, Part One concentrates on the fundamental principles of surface wettability and superhydrophobicity, before moving into Part Two and Part Three, which focus on different aspects of superhydrophobic coatings based on the materials used for fabrication and the substrate on which the coating is applied. Finally, Part Four focuses on the applications of these coatings. This book will serve as a valuable reference for graduate students, researchers and industrial practitioners in multiple industries working on surface wettability, materials chemistry and coatings related technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallic Coatings for Corrosion Control describes how metal coatings can control corrosion, the selection process, preparations, suitability, limitations, and how coatings are applied. The book reviews the nature of corrosion, the forms of corrosion (even general, uneven general, even local, narrow pits, cracking), electrochemical mechanism of corrosion, effects of discontinuities in coatings, and economic considerations of coating. It describes pretreatments (such as removal of superficial corrosion, abrading, polishing), the coating processes (molten or spray application, chemical or vapor deposition, diffusion coating), and also coating performance. The rate of corrosion on different metals such as aluminum, cadmium, copper, gold, silver, or tin depends on the presence of an oxide film, solubility, electrodeposits, or tarnish blackening. Gold is resistant to corrosion and tarnishing except in aqua regia. The book recommends the following when the engineer is selecting a type of coating: the environment where it is exposed, the service life required, the substrate material, shape or size of the article, its decorative appeal, mechanical factors, and if there will be any subsequent fabrication. The book is useful for students of civil, structural, and mechanical engineering. Designers and technicians of industrial machinery or maritime equipment will also profit from reading it.
