However, dietary patterns advance insight into which particular foods influence bone and nutritional health status. The aim of this study was to explore the associations between dietary patterns, bone and nutritional health status in postmenopausal women. This cross-sectional study examined 127 postmenopausal women aged between 54 - 81 years. Body composition and bone health status were determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The dietary composition was assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire composed of 108 foods, of which 34 food groups were created. Dietary patterns (DP) were identified by principal component analysis. The bone and nutritional measures were regressed onto the dietary pattern. Five DPs were identified, two of which were associated with body composition. Fruit and carbohydrate DP was associated with a reduction in weight (r = -0.192, P= 0.038), body mass index (r = -0.184, P= 0.047) and body fat (r = -0.181, P= 0.050). Coffee-rich DP was associated with increased weight (r = 0.223, P= 0.015), body mass index (r = 0.245, P= 0.008) and body fat (r = 0.195, P= 0.036). Bone health status; spine T-score (r = 0.283, P= 0.002), hip T-score (r = 0.309, P= 0.001), femoral neck T-score (r = 0.317, P= 0.001) and whole-body bone mineral density (r = 0.261, P= 0.004) were also associated with coffee-rich DP. Milk products DP was associated with spine T-score (r = 0.304, P= 0.001). A dietary pattern characterized by high factor loadings of coffee was associated with higher BMD and T-scores. Although coffee intake has been associated with low bone mass, the possibility of the impact of coffee intake as an important determinant of bone health status in postmenopausal women needs more research focus.Conflict of interest:There is no conflict of interest.

Book excerpt: BACKGROUND: Dietary supplements are increasing in popularity; individuals are looking beyond traditional methods of calorie restriction and exercise to improve health. Calcium is a critical nutrient for bone metabolism that has also been shown to enhance weight loss effects secondary to diet. PURPOSE: To determine whether eight months of calcium supplementation, in a liquid, shelf-stable form, increases bone mineral density or decreases body weight and/or body fat in free-living young adult women. METHODS: Volunteer subjects (n=42) were randomly assigned to a supplement group receiving 1,125 mg Ca2+/day (CA-BEV) or to a free-living control group (CON), which did not receive the supplement. At baseline and after the 8-month intervention (POST), dietary intake was assessed using 3-day diet records. Total body composition (body fat percentage, %FatTB; abdominal percentage fat, %FatAb; fat mass, FM; non-bone fat-free mass, FFM) and bone mineral density (lumbar spine and femoral neck; BMD) were measured via dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Subjects also completed a sub-maximal treadmill exercise test to estimate respiratory fitness at baseline and POST. RESULTS: At POST, the CA-BEV group's calcium intake (1,868[plus or minus]941 mg/d) was significantly greater than (p

Book excerpt: Because athletes often seek to enhance their performance and body composition through nutrition, researchers must continue to investigate the current dietary consumption and the relationship of diet to body composition to best individualize nutrition guidance for athletes. Exploration of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake provides insight on possible nutrition trends in specific athlete populations and risks for deficiencies. Calcium, magnesium, and zinc affect physiological mechanisms and systems needed for athletic performance, such as calcium for bone health; magnesium for energy production; and, zinc for the function of hundreds of enzymes and proteins. One purpose of our research was to determine the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc in female and male athletes, including runners, triathletes, rowers, CrossFit athletes, and General athletes, 18 years of age and older. We also investigated the presence of sex differences and sport specific differences in dietary intake of these minerals. Finally, we examined possible correlations among these mineral intakes and body composition (bone mineral density [BMD] and percent body fat) to determine the strongest predictors of body composition. We evaluated the dietary intake and body composition of 247 athletes, 129 women and 118 men, with a mean age of 34.86±11.38 years. The population included runners (n=90), General athletes (n=59), triathletes (n=43), rowers (n=34), and CrossFit athletes (n=21). Dietary intake was assessed via a 2005 Block Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), which analyzes one's annual macronutrient and micronutrient intake. Bone mineral density (total body, lumbar spine, and dual femoral neck) and percent body fat were measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). One sample T-tests were used to compare the dietary intake of calcium, magnesium, and zinc to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in female and male athletes. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine differences in dietary intake between the sexes and among various sports. Multiple regression analyses were utilized to identify the strongest predictors for BMD and percent body fat. All data were analyzed using standard SPSS version 25 software, with the alpha a priori set at 0.05. We found that across all female athletes, dietary intake of calcium was significantly below the RDA of 1000 mg/day (801.3 mg/day ± 264.9, p

Book excerpt: "Bone mineral density (BMD) decreases during lactation, therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine if exercise could slow this loss. Women were randomized to either an exercise group (EG, n=5) [aerobic (3d/wk, 45 min/d) and resistance exercise (3d/wk)] or control group (CG, n=6) (no exercise) during the 16 wk study. Body composition and BMD were measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry at lumbar spine (LS), hip, and total body. Significant differences in change from baseline between CG and EG were observed for LS bone mineral content (BMC) ( -7.4 " 2.4 vs.-2.9 " 1.0%, p

Book excerpt: This new International Olympic Committee (IOC) handbook covers the science, medicine and psycho-social aspects of females in sports at all levels of competition. Each chapter focuses on the specific issues that female athletes confront both on and off the field, such as bone health, nutritional recommendations, exercise/competition during menstruation and pregnancy, and much more. Fully endorsed by the IOC and drawing upon the experience of an international team of expert contributors, no other publication deals with the topic in such a concise and complete manner. The Female Athlete is recommended for all health care providers for women and girl athletes internationally for all sports and all levels of competition. It is a valuable resource for medical doctors, physical and occupational therapists, nutritionists, and sports scientists as well as coaches, personal trainers and athletes.
