Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success of Pink Salmon Spawning Relative to Size of Spawning Bed Materials Permeability of bottom materials is prob ably an important factor limiting fry production in spawning beds. It has been shown how permeability is related to size composition of bottom materials, and it is possible to compare relative permeability of spawning beds by determining average size composi tion. Hence, a simple and direct method of measuring physical properties of spawning beds pertaining directly to their capacity to produce fry has been provided through develop ing techniques for measuring size composi tion of bottom materials. Pronounced differences in size composition of bottom materials were observed among several pink salmon spawning streams. The more productive spawning streams had the highest permeability coefficients. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "The effect of egg weight on survival and development of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) embryos, alevins, and fry was analyzed; in addition, embryo survival was investigated in relation to additive genetic variation. Embryonic survival to eyeing, development time to hatch, yolk weight, somatic tissue weight, yolk use rate, somatic tissue growth rate, and the survival of first-feeding fry was recorded relative to egg weight. The analyses demonstrated significant egg weight effects on development time to hatch, yolk weight, somatic tissue weight, yolk use rate, and somatic tissue growth rate on alevins. Weight and length of post-emergent fry (17 weeks post-ponding) were also significantly affected by initial egg weight. However, egg weight did not affect survival of eyed eggs or fry. Differential family-specific survival of eyed eggs indicated the presence of significant additive genetic variation"--Leaf 3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Criteria for the design and construction of a prototype streamside incubator for Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus) eggs and alevins are described. Operation of the prototype and methods of transporting freshly spawned salmon eggs from distant sources are reported. Effects of water velocity, stocking density, and substrate type on the growth, development, survival, and behavior of Pacific salmon embryos, alevins, and fry were studied. The results suggest that the optimum conditions result from low stocking density of about one layer of fertilized eggs, water velocity of 54 to 220 cm/hr. and a smooth cobble substrate. The prototype incubator was tested with about 500, 000 salmon eggs in 1968-69. Due to some serious mechanical problems and poor water circulation in the hatchery tanks, mortalities exceeded the fry production for the first year of operation. Several problems were identified and design improvements suggested. A method was developed for transporting live salmon eggs unfertilized by packing the eggs and milt in separate containers. By maintaining temperatures of 6°c and effecting fertilization after 20 hours in storage, very high (> 90%) fertility was obtained. A practical application of the method was demonstrated with 150,000 pink salmon eggs transported from southeastern Alaska to Oregon.

Book excerpt: The last major synthesis of our knowledge of fish migration and the underlying transport and guidance phenomena, both physical and biological, was "Fish Migration" published 16 years ago by F.R. Harden Jones (1968). That synthesis was based largely upon what could be gleaned by classical fishery-biology techni.ques, such as tagging and recapture studies, commercial fishing statistics, and netting and trapping studies. Despite the fact that Harden Jones also provided, with a good deal of thought and speculation, a theoretical basis for studying the various aspects of fish migration and migratory orientation, progress in this field has been, with a few excepti.ons, piecemeal and more disjointed than might have been expected. Thus we welcomed the approach from the NATO Marine Sciences Programme Panel and the encouragement from F.R. Harden Jones to develop a proprosal for, and ultimately to organize, a NATO Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on mechanisms of fish migration. Substantial progress had been made with descriptive, analytical and predictive approaches to fish migration since the appearance of "Fish ~ligration." Both because of the progress and the often conflicting results of research, we felt that the time was again right and the effort justified to synthesize and to critically assess our knowledge. Our ultimate aim was to identify the gains and shortcomings and to develop testable hypotheses for the next decade or two.
