The reliability of composite laminates with different notch sizes is evaluated using point stress criterion and average stress criterion. Reliability values are calculated based on the stresses developed over certain characteristic distances from the notch edge and the strength of the corresponding un-notched laminates. In practical applications, it is very difficult to achieve a perfect circular profile during the drilling operation on a composite laminate and also there is a possibility that the driven hole is offset from the desired location. These imperfections affect the reliability of the laminate. In the present work the perturbation in the circular profile of the hole is modeled using a hypotrochoid variation and further, the location of the hole center is modeled using a Gaussian random variable. Tests are conducted on specimens made of graphite/epoxy material to determine the material properties that are required for stochastic analysisn.

The reliability of notched composite laminates is evaluated based on the average stress over a certain characteristic distance from the notch edge and the strength of the corresponding un-notched laminate. In the present work the perturbation in the radius of the hole is modeled using a hypotrochoid variation and further, the location of the hole centre is modeled using a Gaussian random variable. In order to achieve a design with a required reliability and safety, (i) the stress analysis of the notched laminate has to be conducted based on a stochastic approach, (ii) the strength distribution and its probabilistic parameters have to be determined based on a number of tests, and (iii) the reliability analysis has to be conducted. Two-dimensional stochastic finite element analyses of notched symmetric cross-ply [0/90] 4 s and angle-ply [02/±45] 2 s composite laminates are conducted. A comprehensive experimental investigation is carried out to determine the strength values of the laminates subjected to tensile load. Average stress criterion is used to predict the characteristic length values of the laminates. The distributions of the strength and characteristic length of laminates with symmetric cross-ply [0/90] 4 s configuration are determined by testing 25 samples of notched and 25 samples of un-notched laminates. In a similar manner, tests on angle-ply laminate [02/±45] 2 s are conducted. Stochastic simulation is performed on the laminates by subjecting them to uniaxial, biaxial, shear and bending loads. Probabilistic moments of the stress parameters that are of interest are found out for the so-called controlled hole and uncontrolled hole laminates. The reliability indices for the two laminate configurations are calculated by combining the stochastic finite element analysis and the test results.

Book excerpt: In the thesis, a combined experimental and stochastic finite element analysis methodology that can incorporate the material property variabilities and based on these, predict the stochastic characteristics of the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and the Strain Energy Release Rate (G) of composite laminates, is developed. Using this methodology, the probabilistic fracture analysis of laminated composites is performed. The material and geometric properties of the laminate are described in terms of homogeneous two-dimensional spatial stochastic fields and random variables that are established based on material property tests. In the finite element formulation, the elasticity matrix for the laminate is obtained based on the laminate theory. This matrix, in contrast to the deterministic finite element analysis, will be a stochastic matrix that has different values at different Gauss point locations within the same element. The fracture behavior of the laminate is quantified through the two parameters, Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and Energy Release Rate (ERR). A formulation for determining the reliability of composite laminates based on the probabilistic characteristics of stress intensity factor and that of the fracture toughness, is described. Different types of orthotropic laminates are analyzed.

Book excerpt: Tension or compression fracture behavior studies are normally initiated with open hole tension or compression tests performed at the laminate level. While these test data serve as an excellent starting point in residual strength studies in small notch sizes, the need to evaluate and verify the residual strength for larger structures and at larger notch sizes region is still there. An experimental study was performed with the focus on large notch sizes of circular hole and narrow slit flaw configurations on laminates fabricated with a carbon/epoxy oven-cure capable prepreg material system. The current part of the study focused on uniaxial tension loading with a constant width and height to flaw dimension ratio. Experimental test data were then combined with lamina and laminate level data for residual strength curves generation and the curves were validated against Whitney-Nuismer and Mar-Lin fracture mechanics models. The effects of flaw sizes and the flaw type towards the residual strength capability of a laminate turn out to be substantial as the notch size gets larger than one inch. Test results showed that a narrow slit or saw cut damage is far more critical than a circular hole cut-out. The notch sensitivity order of a saw cut flaw is also roughly three times more than that of a circular hole. Analytical studies were also performed to evaluate several finite element method variable effects on residual strength prediction and to discover the best practice in stress analyses of notched composite laminates. Point Stress failure criterion was used in the analyses and predicted failure loads were compared to the experimental data. Good agreements and correlations were found between the analytical predictions and the experimental data. It can be concluded that the residual strength of a notched laminated composite can be reasonably predicted from finite element analyses.

Book excerpt: Experimental results and a numerical study were used to investigate the mechanisms critical to the failure of notched graphite/epoxy laminates. Experimental results from the Boeing/NASA ATCAS program were reviewed and reduced to give insight into the growth of damage from the tips of notches in tensile specimens. A finite element model was constructed to model the specimens, and a damaged based modeling approach used to investigate the effects of this damage. Properties of the elements in a region at the notch tips were altered to simulate damage. Matrix failure and fiber failure were modeled by reducing the material properties in these elements. Delaminations were modeled using a 2-D stacked membrane approach. The damage types were impregnated into the finite element model individually and in various combinations, and the changes in the stress and strain distributions in the model examined. Most calculations were linear. A geometrically non-linear model was used to examine buckling observed above and below the notch in large specimens. The experimental results confirmed the importance of the role of progressive damage growing from the notch tip in the failure of the laminate. Such damage can actually increase the strength of the laminate by relieving the stress concentration at the notch tip. The numerical results showed that modeled matrix failure and delaminations had very small effects individually, but significant effects when combined. Fiber failure had a large effect. Only models incorporating severe damage, including delaminations, matrix cracking, and substantial fiber failure, could correlate to the large changes in strain distribution observed to accompany damage in the test specimens. The non-linear analyses replicated the observed buckling above and below the notch. It was found to have a major effect on the stresses near the notch tip. This study shows that it is possible to model the effects of damage on the stress field in a notched composite laminate; that such models are sensitive to modeling details such as interactions of damage types; that the damage observed during tests is severe; and that buckling near the notch tip can have profound effects.
