However, because most chemical inputs are restricted from organic agriculture, producers rely heavily on tillage for weed control, which in turn can be detrimental to soil health. The use of cover crops, which can be employed to suppress weed growth, may provide an alternative to tillage for sustaining yields. Compost can be used as a fertilizer for organic soybean, however the ideal rate is not always known. Agricultural land has been recognized as a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, however GHG release from soils may vary according to crop production strategies utilizing cover crops and compost. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of tillage, cover crop, and compost rate on yield and the soil release of two GHG, N2O and CO2, under an organic soybean cropping system grown on a Missouri claypan soil. A corn (Zea mays)-soybean (Glycine max)-wheat (Triticum aestivum) organic cropping system was initiated in 2012 at the University of Missouri Bradford Research Center near Columbia, MO using a randomized complete block, split-plot design with four replications. Each crop was investigated independently with tillage/cover crop combinations as the main plot treatment and compost rate for the split-plot treatment. Tillage/cover crop treatments included tilled without cover crop (Till), tilled with cover crop (TillCC), and no-till with cover crop (NTCC). Compost rates were based on soil-test phosphorous recommendations from the University of Missouri Soil Testing Laboratory. Compost treatments were 0, half the recommended rate (0.5RR), the recommended rate (RR), and 1.5 times the recommended rate (1.5RR). Gas samples were collected at least once a week during the 2012 and 2013 growing seasons, and several times in succession after significant events such as rain, irrigation, and cultivation. Neither tillage/cover practice nor compost was found to affect either N2O or CO2 emissions during 2012 or 2013. Low levels of gas flux were observed. Low emissions may be linked to the drought which occurred during 2012, and below average summer precipitation in 2013. In 2012 organic soybean grown with tillage and without cover crop out-yielded tilled and no-till with cover crop by 0.88 Mg ha-1 , while compost rate had no effect on yield. Although tillage did not have an effect on yield for 2013, the RR and 1.5RR compost rates led to the highest yields. Yield response to compost rate varied by tillage/cover crop practice in 2012. For the no-till systems yield generally increased with compost rate. For the tilled management systems (with or without cover crops) yield was lower at the 0.5RR and RR. No agronomic explanation is available for this finding. Weed presence was 300% higher in plots with the 0.5RR than the 0 compost rate. However, the 0 compost rate was associated with the greatest soybean population count in 2013. These results suggest that tillage, cover crop practice, and compost rate can have an effect on organic soybean yield. Cover crops can have a negative effect on yield, especially during periods of drought. There is an ideal compost rate, and yield increases attributed to compost may not occur until multiple years of use. Emissions of CO2 and N2O were not affected by tillage, cover crop practice, or compost rate during this study.

Small farmers in many countries think inorganic fertilizers are expensive and degrade soils, and thus policymakers want to promote organic instead of inorganic fertilizers. To develop practical fertilizer recommendations for farmers, yield responses to applied fertilizers from inorganic and organic sources, indigenous nutrient supply from soil, and nutrient use efficiency require consideration. There is a lack of sufficient scientific understanding regarding the need and benefit of integrated nutrient management (i.e., judicious use of inorganic and organic sources of nutrients) to meet the nutrient demand of high-yielding crops, increase yields and profits, and reduce soil and environmental degradation. Inadequate knowledge has constrained efforts to develop precision nutrient management recommendations that aim to rationalize input costs, increase yields and profits, and reduce environmental externalities. This Special Issue of the journal provided some evidence of the usefulness of integrated nutrient management to sustain soil resources and supply nutrients to crops grown with major cereal and legume crops in some developing countries.

These benefits can be affected by species, biomass accumulation, and management practices. Although large amounts of biomass are good for maximizing benefits, it can result in problems for establishing the subsequent crop. Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] accounts for over 50% of Arkansas crop hectares annually; therefore, understanding the effect that a cover crop can have on the following soybean crop is crucial to the successful implementation of cover crops within the state. A study was established to evaluate winter cover crops as an alternative to traditional Arkansas practices, such as winter fallow, as well as winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) soybean double-crop system, and the effect each cropping system has on soybean yield and partial returns. Additionally, a goal of this study was to assess a variety of cover crop species and blends as well as their effect on aboveground biomass accumulation, nutrient uptake, and stand establishment of the following soybean crop. Soil organic matter (SOM) and pH were also used to evaluate overall soil health following three full rotations of each winter treatment. Results of the study show that winter cover crops do not affect the following soybean crop establishment, but had a positive influence on soybean yield and partial returns in a no-tillage system. Except for blue lupin (Lupinus angustifolius), each cover crop treatment proved to be an equally viable alternative to a traditional double-crop system and more profitable than a winter fallow system. Cover crops not only have an immediate impact of increasing soybean yield, but cover crops also have the potential to provide long-term benefits. Previous research has shown that increased biomass production typically increases SOM and results of this study indicate that cover crop treatments produced up to four times as much aboveground biomass compared to a winter fallow management strategy. Treatments that produced the most biomass also accumulated the most aboveground nutrient contents for the macronutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). There were no differences in soil health calculations, but each treatment received a "good" soil health score. Our results indicate that winter cover crops provide a promising alternative to the winter wheat soybean double-crop system and winter fallow management program and with continuous management, soil quality can be improved.

Manitoba has seen a twenty-fold increase in soybean acres seeded since 2000, with over 1.6 million acres seeded in 2016. This change presents unique opportunities and challenges to improve crop rotations in Manitoba. This experiment studied the effect of four crop sequences on soybean yield, mycorrhizal colonization, and biological nitrogen fixation. In the first year of this experiment, spring wheat, canola, corn and soybeans were grown at three sites in Manitoba (Carman, Portage la Prairie, and Kelburn). In the second year, soybeans were grown on these same plots as a test crop. This two-year sequence of crops was done twice at each site, in 2012-13 and 2013-14. To determine mycorrhizal colonization, root samples were collected at the V3 stage and then analyzed microscopically for mycorrhizal infection. Nitrogen fixation was estimated using the natural abundance method using soybeans collected at the R5 and R6 stage and canola as a reference crop. Soybean following soybean had significantly higher grain yield than all other crop sequences at one site year, and significantly lower grain yield than all other crop sequences at another site year. There were no other differences in soybean test crop yield between crop sequences. Crop sequence significantly affected mycorrhizal colonization. Soybean following canola had significantly lower mycorrhizal colonization than soybean following soybean or corn. Soybean following spring wheat also had significantly lower mycorrhizal colonization than soybean following soybean or corn. Soil test phosphorus levels also significantly affected mycorrhizal colonization, with increasing soil phosphorus resulting in decreased mycorrhizal colonization. Crop sequence significantly affected biological nitrogen fixation. Soybean following soybean or corn often had significantly greater biological nitrogen fixation than soybean following spring wheat or canola. Soil test nitrate levels affected biological nitrogen fixation, with increasing soil nitrate resulting in decreased biological nitrogen fixation. Soil test nitrate levels were affected by the carbon to nitrogen ratio of the preceding crop, with a higher carbon to nitrogen ratio associated with decreased soil nitrate. These results indicate that although there is often not a yield penalty associated with specific rotations, crop sequence has a strong impact on mycorrhizal colonization and biological nitrogen fixation. The soil organisms associated with those processes affect soil phosphorus uptake and nitrogen fixation. Producers should consider the importance of crop rotation when seeking to maximize productivity through symbiotic processes with mycorrhizae and nodule forming bacteria.
