Book excerpt: Marijuana: Effects on Human Behavior attempts to synthesize much of the existing experimentation concerning the acute and chronic effects of marijuana and its derivatives on human behavior. The book opens with a chapter on the strategies for conducting research on marijuana. It also describes a clinical study at the University of British Columbia. The next chapter discusses the issues that have beclouded the question of legalization of marijuana in the United States. This is followed by separate chapters on the effects of marijuana on motor and mental performance; marijuana-memory research; a model of attention which can be used to describe the effects of marijuana use on cognition; and the effects of marijuana on neuropsychological functioning and learning. Subsequent chapters examine the behavioral actions of cannabis in man; compare the behavioral actions of cannabinoids in humans with those found in infrahumans, with special reference to acquisition and retention processes, timing behavior, state-dependent learning, and attention; and investigate the long-term effects of cannabis use.

The next three chapters discuss the effects of marijuana on cells, tissues, organs, and biological systems. Chapter 6 deals with behavioral and psychosocial effects. Chapter 7 discusses the present status of marijuana as a therapeutic agent. Chapter 8 describes and analyzes the federal research program on marijuana. A summary includes the principal findings and conclusions of the study, together with suggestions for future research. Book excerpt: Drugs and Driving is a compendium of papers from a symposium of the same title presented at the U.S. Transportation Research Board. This collection reviews the effects of five classes of drugs on driving (amphetamines, tranquilizers, barbiturates, narcotics, cannabis), the other studies being made on drugs and driving, as well as some countermeasure programs against drunk driving. The papers report that amphetamines can induce risky driving behavior, tranquilizers can increase traffic accident risks, barbiturates can degrade driving skills especially when the drug is combined with alcohol, while marijuana use can impair important driving skills. Another paper evaluates drug use and driving risk among high school students in Toronto: results show that the total effect of infrequent use of drugs on accidents is small compared to alcohol use. A study of out-patients in Finland notes that the combined used of alcohol and drugs tend to increase accident frequency. One paper refutes that Alcohol Safety Action Programs in the United States are ineffective. This collection can be helpful for sociologist, psychologists, psychiatrists, traffic safety officers, and heads of urban safety and traffic divisions.
