Book excerpt: The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Types 304 and 316 stainless-steel plate and Type 308 weld before and after thermal aging was characterized using both fracture mechanics and Charpy specimens. Aging at 566°C for 10 000 h reduced static Jc initiation toughness values for both wrought and weld metals by 10 to 20%, and tearing moduli were reduced by 20 to 30%. Under semi-dynamic and dynamic loading conditions, the fracture resistance was not decreased below the static response for either unaged or aged materials. The present results also demonstrated that the large degradation in Charpy V-notch impact energy after aging was not representative of the impact resistance for stainless-steel components containing cracks or crack-life defects. Fractographic examinations revealed that the large loss in Charpy energy was associated with aging-induced microstructural changes that substantially decreased the energy required to initiate a crack from a blunt notch. At very slow strain rates, creep crack growth was found to cause a significant degradation in fracture toughness.

Book excerpt: The effect of loading rates, ranging from 10 to 100,000 ksi square root of (in/sec), and temperatures, ranging from room temperature to -100F, on the plane strain fracture toughness of several high strength alloy steels has been determined. Materials investigated are a commercial 4340 steel, a modified 4330 steel from a gun tube forging having three different heat treatments and two different heats of 250 grade maraging steel. Test specimens utilized are essentially ASTM 'compact tension' type specimens of one inch thickness. Tests were conducted on an open loop, hydraulic, high loading rate tensile testing machine. Results are presented in the form of graphs of fracture toughness versus temperature for the maximum and minimum loading rates ('dynamic' and 'static'). Fracture toughness versus loading rate at -60F and yield strength versus elastic strain rate at room temperature, -60F and -100F for one heat of maraging steel are also reported. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report presents a revision of the procedure and correlations presented earlier in NUREG/CR-4513, ANL-90/42 (June 1991) for predicting the change in mechanical properties of cast stainless steel components due to thermal aging during service in light water reactors at 280-330°C (535-625°F). The correlations presented in this report are based on an expanded data base and have been optimized with mechanical-property data on cast stainless steels aged up to (almost equal to)58,000 h at 290-350°C (554-633°F). The fracture toughness J-R curve, tensile stress, and Charpy-impact energy of aged cast stainless steels are estimated from known material information. Mechanical properties of a specific cast stainless steel are estimated from the extent and kinetics of thermal embrittlement. Embrittlement of cast stainless steels is characterized in terms of room-temperature Charpy-impact energy. Charpy-impact energy as a function of time and temperature of reactor service is estimated from the kinetics of thermal embrittlement, which are also determined from the chemical composition. The initial impact energy of the unaged steel is required for these estimations. Initial tensile flow stress is needed for estimating the flow stress of the aged material. The fracture toughness J-R curve for the material is then obtained by correlating room-temperature Charpy-impact energy with fracture toughness parameters. The values of J{sub IC} are determined from the estimated J-R curve and flow stress. A common {open_quotes}predicted lower-bound{close_quotes} J-R curve for cast stainless steels of unknown chemical composition is also defined for a given grade of steel, range of ferrite content, and temperature. Examples of estimating mechanical properties of cast stainless steel components during reactor service are presented.

The extent or degree of thermal embrittlement at 'saturation, ' i.e., the minimum impact energy that can be achieved for a material after long-term aging, is determined from the chemical composition of the steel. Charpy-impact energy as a function of time and temperature of reactor service is estimated from the kinetics of thermal embrittlement, which are also determined from the chemical composition. Book excerpt: Compact tension specimens taken from FFTF primary piping materials (Type 316 stainless steel (SS) and 16-8-2 SS weld metal) and from reactor vessel materials (304 SS and 308 SS weld metal) were heated in laboratory furnaces from 100,000 hours. Fracture toughness testing was performed on these specimens, which are 7.62- and 25.4-mm thick, respectively at the aging temperature (482 and 427 degrees). Results were analyzed with the multiple-specimen method. Thermal aging continues to reduce the fracture toughness of FFTF component materials. Results show that thermal aging has a strong effect on the toughness degradation of weld metals, particularly for 16-8-2 SS weld whose aged/unaged Jc ratio is only 0.31 after 100,000-hour aging. The fracture toughness of the 308 and 16-8-2 SS weld metals fluctuated during 20,000 to 50,000-hour aging but deteriorated as the aging time increased to 100,000 hours; the toughness degradation is significant. Fracture control based on a fracture mechanics approach should be considered.

Book excerpt: Degradation of fracture toughness, tensile, and Charpy-impact properties of Type 304 and 304/308 SS pipe welds due to thermal aging was studied at room temperature and 290 C. Thermal aging of SS welds results in moderate decreases in charpy-impact strength and fracture toughness. Upper-shelf energy decreased by 50-80 J/cm2. Decrease in fracture toughness J-R curve or J{sub IC} is relatively small. Thermal aging had no or little effect on tensile strength of the welds. Fracture properties of SS welds are controlled by the distribution and morphology of second-phase particles. Failure occurs by formation and growth of microvoids near hard inclusions; such processes are relatively insensitive to thermal aging. The ferrite phase has little or no effect on fracture properties of the welds. Differences in fracture resistance of the welds arise from differences in the density and size of inclusions. Mechanical-property data from the present study are consistent with results from other investigations. The existing data have been used to establish minimum expected fracture properties for SS welds.

Book excerpt: Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) in and around primary loop piping welds in Boiling Water Reactors has been observed worldwide as plants continue to operate at temperatures and pressures near 2880C (5500F) and 6.9 MPa (1000 PSI). An experimental program was designed to explore the effect of thermal aging on the SCC crack growth rate in weld materials for type 316 and 304 stainless steels. An autoclave facility was designed and constructed for the measurement of SCC crack growth rates under BWR conditions and testing was underway at the time of this writing. The effects of composition and thermal aging on mechanical properties (i.e. tensile, micro-hardness, nano-hardness, Jic, and Charpy-impact toughness) was in process and initial results show an increase in yield strength and a decrease in fracture toughness after aging for 1000 hours at 430 and 400 *C. Thermal aging results in no discernable changes to the 6-ferrite morphology when viewed optically at 500 X agnifications and in the scanning electron microscope.

Book excerpt: A procedure and correlations are presented for predicting Charpy-impact energy, tensile flow stress, fracture toughness J-R curve, and J{sub IC} of aged cast stainless steels from known material information. The ''saturation'' impact strength and fracture toughness of a specific cast stainless steel, i.e., the minimum value that would be achieved for the material after long-term service, is estimated from the chemical composition of the steel. Mechanical properties as a function of time and temperature of reactor service are estimated from impact energy and flow stress of the unaged material and the kinetics of embrittlement, which are also determined from chemical composition. The J{sub IC} values are determined from the estimated J-R curve and flow stress. Examples of estimating mechanical properties of cast stainless steel components during reactor service are presented. A common predicted lower-bound J-R curve for cast stainless steels of unknown chemical composition is also defined for a given grade of steel, ferrite content, and temperature.
