Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of thin, moderately swept fighter wings has been conducted to evaluate the effect of camber and twist on the effectiveness of leading- and trailing-edge flaps at supersonic speeds in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. The study geometry consisted of a generic fuselage with camber typical of advanced fighter designs without inlets, canopy, or vertical tail. The model was tested with two wing configurations an uncambered (flat) wing and a cambered and twisted wing. Each wing had an identical clipped delta planform with an inboard leading edge swept back 65 deg and an outboard leading edge swept back 50 deg. The trailing edge was swept forward 25 deg. The leading-edge flaps were deflected 4 deg to 15 deg, and the trailing-edge flaps were deflected from -30 deg to 10 deg. Longitudinal force and moment data were obtained at Mach numbers of 1.60, 1.80, 2.00, and 2.16 for an angle-of-attack range 4 deg to 20 deg at a Reynolds number of 2.16 x 10(exp 6) per foot and for an angle-of-attack range 4 deg to 20 deg at a Reynolds number of 2.0 x 10(exp 6) per foot. Book excerpt: The effect of a finite trailing-edge thickness on the pressure drag of rectangular and delta wings with truncated diamond-shaped airfoil sections with a given thickness ratio is studied for supersonic Mach numbers, linearized theory being used to evaluate the surface pressures. In order to facilitate comparison with wings having sharp trailing edges, the position of maximum thickness and base height are determined for least thickness and base height are determined for least pressure drag as functions of a base-pressure parameter. Comparison is then made between the drag of these wings and similar wings with a sharp trailing edge for various aspect ratios and thickness ratios as a function of stream Mach number. The calculations of the drag characteristics for these wings show that significant drag characteristics for these wings show that significant drag reductions are possible under some condtions at high supersonic speeds. These reductions are relatively independent of aspect ratio for the rectangular wings but depend considerably on aspec ratio for the delta wings; the smaller aspect ratios show the larger drag reductions. Calculations of the spanwise distribution of drag are included to compare further the effect of a base on the drag fro different aspect ratios.

Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been made of two unswept, partial-span, flap-type controls (differing only in hinge-line location) mounted on a 60 degree delta wing. One control was unbalanced and the other has a 100-percent overhang balance. Control hinge moments as well as aerodynamic characteristics of the complete wing-body combination were obtained for control deflections from 0 to 40 degrees over an angle-of-attack range of plus or minus 12 degrees at Mach numbers from 0.75 to 1.96. Reynolds numbers varied between 2,200,000 and 2,200,000. Expressions derived from linear theory for the hinge-moment coefficient due to angle of attack for unswept partial-span controls (which extend neither to the wing tip nor to the wing center line) on triangular wings having subsonic leading edges are given in an appendix.
