Book Synopsis Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering by : Jay Ameratunga
Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.

Book Synopsis Soil Quality for Crop Production and Ecosystem Health by : E.G. Gregorich
Download or read book Soil Quality for Crop Production and Ecosystem Health written by E.G. Gregorich and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-11-10 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil is a complex body that exists as many types, each with diverse properties that may vary widely across time and space as a function of many factors. This complexity makes the evaluation of soil quality much more challenging than that of water or air quality. Evaluation of soil quality now considers environmental implications as well as economic productivity, seeking to be more holistic in its approach. Thus, soil quality research draws from a wide range of disciplines, blending the approaches of biologists, physicists, chemists, ecologists, economists and agronomists, among others. This book presents a broad perspective of soil quality that includes these various perspectives and gives a strong theoretical basis for the assessment of soil quality.A short glossary provides definitions for terms used throughout the book.
Book Synopsis Foundation Engineering Handbook by : Hsai-Yang Fang
Download or read book Foundation Engineering Handbook written by Hsai-Yang Fang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 935 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ten years have passed since the first edition was published. During that period there have been a substantial number of changes in geotechnical engineering, especially in the applications of foundation engineering. As the world population increases, more land is needed and many soil deposits previously deemed unsuitable for residential housing or other construction projects are now being used. Such areas include problematic soil regions, mining subsidence areas, and sanitary landfills. To overcome the problems associated with these natural or man-made soil deposits, new and improved methods of analysis, design, and implementation are needed in foundation construction. As society develops and living standards rise, tall buildings, transportation facilities, and industrial complexes are increasingly being built. Because of the heavy design loads and the complicated environments, the traditional design concepts, construction materials, methods, and equipment also need improvement. Further, recent energy and material shortages have caused additional burdens on the engineering profession and brought about the need to seek alternative or cost-saving methods for foundation design and construction.

Book Synopsis The Effect of Structure on the Consolidation of Compacted Unsaturated Clay Soils by : William Joseph Graham
Download or read book The Effect of Structure on the Consolidation of Compacted Unsaturated Clay Soils written by William Joseph Graham and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Contained in this paper are the results of research which was performed to investigate the relation between the volume-change mechanisms of shrinkage and one-dimensional compression for two clay soils, including some samples whose structures had been altered by the addition of flocculating and dispersing agents. Shrinkage tests were conducted with a special mold designed to facilitate the study of a soil's shrinkage path. consolidation tests on undisturbed samples and one-dimensional compression tests on unsaturated samples compacted in the vicinity of optimum moisture content were performed. A detailed study was made of a highly plastic red Missouri clay. Complications arose in the shrinkage tests which prevented a general comparison of the two means of volume reduction. Specific conclusions are drawn as to the mechanism of unsaturated compression of clays and the related effects of structure, and suggestions are made for further study"--Abstract, leaf ii.
