Book excerpt: The current study was designed to investigate the relative contributions of client readiness and counselor social influence in establishing working alliance in outpatient counseling. Instruments used are Prochaska and DiClemente's (1989) Stages of Change Scale (SOC), Barak and LaCrosse's (1975) Counselor Rating Form (CRF), and Horvath and Greenberg's (1989) Working Alliance Inventory (WAI). Subjects were 27 new client/counselor dyads in a private practice setting. Client's perception of stage of change was measured prior to intake, while counselor social influence and working alliance was measured after session three or four. Results of the study suggest a strong relationship between the CRF and WAI, while the SOC was minimally related to the alliance measure. In spite of significant restriction of range in the sample, cluster analysis generated two distinct groupings which varied on the SOC maintenance subscale. This offers support for the utility of pre-treatment motivation as a predictor of the working alliance. However the low correlations between these two variables suggests that while both may be important correlates of the counseling process and significant contributors to outcome, the relation between SOC and WAI may be orthogonal in nature. Additionally, high correlations between the SOC and WAI suggest that both may be tapping some underlying common factor, suggesting that this relationship deserves further attention.
