Book excerpt: Model tests were made to determine the landingimpact characteristics of a parachute-supported reentry capsule that had a compliable metal structure as a load-alleviating device. A 1/6scale dynamic model having compliable Al-alloy legs designed to give a low onset rate of acceleration on impact was tested. Landings were made on concrete, sand, and water. The maximum acceleration encountered was approximately 35g and the maximum onset rate was 2,000 g/sec. The model tumbled in landings on concrete at the 55 degrees flight-path, + or - 30 degrees contact-attitude conditions; therefore, loadalleviating devices on the canister end of the model would be required. To evaluate the scaling characteristics of compliable metal structures, models were tested with 1/4.1-scale and fullscale Al-alloy legs. The maximum vertical accelerations and strokes obtained from tests of the 1/4.1-scale and full-scale legs were the same within the recording accuracy of the equipment. (Author).

Book excerpt: A brief experimental investigation was made of the landing-impact characteristics of a 1/9-scale dynamic model of a winged space vehicle. The landing tests were made by catapulting a free model onto a hard; surface runway and onto water. The model had a conical fuselage and a flat - plate wing with a basic delta planform and 75 deg sweepback of the leading edge. The use of yielding-metal shock absorbers and various landing-gear arrangements was investigated during landing impact. The basic landing gear consisted of a dual rubber-tired nose wheel and twin main skids aft of the center of gravity near the wing tips. landing motion and acceleration data were obtained over a range of landing attitudes, gross weights, and initial sinking speeds. Brief tests were made with an alternate nose-wheel location. An all-skid configuration also was briefly evaluated for hard-surface and water landings. The landing gear employing yielding struts for impact-energy absorption during hard-surface landings resulted in accelerations of approximately 5 1/2 g near the nose gear over a range of landing parameters. Replacing the nose wheel and tire with a skid did not significantly change the accelerations. Landings in smooth water with rigid struts and adequate planing area at the nose skid resulted in a maximum landing acceleration of approximately 4g.

Book excerpt: Analytical and experimental investigations were made to determine the landing characteristics of a re-entry spacecraft equipped with a verticalcylinder air bag for impact load alleviation. Assuming a rigid body and isothermal air compression and expansion, computations were made to determine accelerations for a landing on concrete from a flight-path angle of 90 degrees (vertical flight path) at a contact attitude of 0 degrees. Two models (1/6 and 1/2 scale) of the air-bag system were tested. A 1/6-scale dynamic model of a spacecraft--air-bag configuration proposed for manned re-entry was landed on concrete, on sand, and in calm water from various flight paths for a range of contact attitudes. Reasonable agreement between computed and experimental data indicates that the scaling technique developed is satisfactory for prediction of fullscale characteristics from model tests with air bags in atmospheric environment. The maximum accelerations obtained during landings on sand were about 11g along the X-axis and about 8g along the Z-axis. The maximum accelerations obtained during landings in water were about 10g along the X-axis and about 6g along the Z-axis. (Author).

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made to determine the landing characteristics of a 1/4-scale dynamic model of the Apollo spacecraft command module using two different active (heat shield deployed prior to landing) landing systems for impact attenuation. One landing system (configuration 1) consisted of six hydraulic struts and eight crushable honeycomb struts. The other landing system (configuration 2), consisting of four hydraulic struts and six strain straps, was lighter. Tests made on water and the hard clay-gravel composite landing surfaces simulated parachute letdown (vertical) velocities of 23 ft/sec (7.0 m/s) (full scale). Landings made on the sand landing surface simulated vertical velocities of 30 ft/sec (9.1 m/s). Horizontal velocities of from 0 to 50 ft/sec (15 m/s) were simulated. Landing attitudes ranged from -30 degrees to 20 degrees , and the roll attitudes were 0 degrees, 90 degrees, and 180 degrees.
