De inleiding tekent gemeenschappelijke patronen: vorsten en VOC waren vaak tot elkaar veroordeeld zonder dat de ene of andere partij evident de overhand had; daarbij onderhield een geschenkencultuur van exotica (paarden en olifanten) veelal de vriendschap.
