Book Synopsis Understanding Attitudes to the European Community by : Miles Hewstone
Download or read book Understanding Attitudes to the European Community written by Miles Hewstone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1986 study presents an insightful perspective on public attitudes towards the European Community. It contains a review of the findings from public opinion surveys of the time on this issue, but goes beyond straightforward description to provide a real understanding of European attitudes. A variety of social-psychological theories are used to test a model of the structure underlying Community attitudes. The original data reported in the present study parallel the findings from much larger, representative and long-term surveys of public opinion. Thus Miles Hewstone is able to derive from his research a wide-ranging analysis of cross-national differences in attitudinal support, the Community's impact on its citizens, and the likely trends in attitude and voting behaviour. At a time when the entry of Spain and Portugal had further expanded the Community's membership, such issues were particularly timely and this clear and penetrating study especially welcome.

Book excerpt: The US Space Shuttle delivering supplies to the US Space Station has a mechanical breakdown that prevents its return to the Earth. The remaining two US Space Shuttles are launched as quickly as possible to carry the needed supplies to the Space Station before the people there run out of expendables: air, water, etc. Both aging Shuttles suffer breakdowns - one explodes on the launch pad and the other has a breakdown in orbit near the Space Station. This second Shuttle is close enough to the Space Station to be secured by a cable and then winched up to the Space Station docking gate. The hero, Dr. Donald Richards, devises two options for rescuing the stranded astronauts: use the new European Space Station Shuttle or use the Soviet Space Shuttle. The US President over-rules NASA's recommendation to use the Soviet Space Shuttle for the rescue, so Richards negotiates an agreement with the European Space Agency to use their Shuttle to rescue the astronauts.

Book Synopsis The Impact of Legislation and Regulation on the Freedom of Movement of Capital in Estonia, Poland and Latvia by : Graeme Baber
Download or read book The Impact of Legislation and Regulation on the Freedom of Movement of Capital in Estonia, Poland and Latvia written by Graeme Baber and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the fundamental freedoms of the European Union’s Internal Market is the free movement of capital. National barriers to the cross-border movement of capital and payments are prohibited, not only between Member States of the Union, but also between these States and third countries. The book investigates to what extent Estonia, Poland and Latvia have implemented laws that comply with this principle. It compares and contrasts the similarities and differences between these three Member States in how their legislation and regulations affect such free movement. The research investigates whether there is an association between the national legal restrictions to the free movement of capital and cross-border capital flows to and from Estonia, Poland and Latvia. It reports the views of executives in the business sectors most affected by these restrictions as to the importance of the free movement of capital to their companies, as to whether the European Union’s regulatory framework supports the free movement of services and the freedom of establishment, and as to whether the national law limits these freedoms.
