Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edward the Fourth Since William Habington's Historie of King Edward IV, published in 1640, and incorporated in White Kennett's Complete History of England, no writer has devoted a monograph to the first of the Yorkist kings. The reasons for this neglect I have endeavoured to indicate in my introductory chapter. The dearth of good contemporary chroniclers is quite extra ordinary, and without them a writer has to fall back on conjecture and the balance of probabilities to an extent that would surprise those who do not know the original authorities. It is this lack of contemporary material, I think, which is chiefly responsible for the fact that until recent times the period received little critical attention from historians. The popular view of Edward IV has been derived principally from three plays of Shakespeare, King Henry VI, Parts II and III, and Richard III, and from that striking historical romance, The Last of the Barons, by Lord Lytton. Sharon Turner and Dr. Lingard may be said to have first written the history of Edward's reign from contemporary authorities. Bishop Stubbs, in the third volume of his Constitutional History of England, treated the question between York and Lancaster on broad and grand lines which make further work on the subject, above all any difference from his expressed opinion, seem almost an impertinence. More recent are the works of Sir James Ramsay and Professor C. W. Oman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Notwithstanding this difficulty, which stands in the way of all Historical research, it is our duty to neglect no opportunity of adding to the number of the ancient contemporary records, by which alone we can hope to increase our knowledge of past events, and to dissipate the obscurity by which they are naturally surrounded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Privy Purse Expenses of Elizabeth of York: Wardrobe Accounts of Edward the Fourth; With a Memoir of Elizabeth of York, and Notes The value of "Privy Purse Expenses" of our Sovereigns, in illustration of History, having been so frequently pointed out, it is unnecessary to urge the utility of this volume. It has been edited upon the same plan as the "Privy Purse Expenses of King Henry the Eighth," which were published about three years ago, since which time numerous records of a similar description have been brought to light, the greater part of which are scattered in various repositories, and others are in the hands of private individuals. Whenever the Government may think that the muniments of the Country should be rendered available for the elucidation of History, manuscripts of this nature ought to be among the first which are collected and indexed, even if they be not published by its authority. Was one of the vilest wretches that ever lived: this tyrant was hardened against any feelings of compassion. One Bur dett, a tradesman of London, who kept a shop at the sign of the Crown, having said in a joke that he would make his son heir to the Crown, this pleasantry was interpreted by the tyrant, Edward, into a derision of his title, and the poor fellow was condemned and executed for the trumpery offence. Similar acts of tyranny were proper pre ludes to the events which ensued; and the scaffold as well as the field incessantly streamed with the richest blood of England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Bookbindings It is impossible to determine at what date the panel stamp was introduced into England, and there are few early examples that can with any certainty be assigned to the 1sth century. The earliest example, perhaps, is to be found on a loose binding in the library of Westminster Abbey. The sides are tooled at the edges with small tools, and in the centre is a twice repeated stamp with the arms presumably of Edward IV. This binding has, however, no binder's mark. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Henry Edward Fox (Afterwards Fourth and Last Lord Holland) 1818-1830 Henry Richard, third Lord Holland, was born in 1773. His father died in 1774; and the death of his mother, a daughter of John, first Earl of Upper Ossory, four years later left him and his sister orphans. Caroline Fox, who was nearly six years senior to him, was educated and brought up successively by her aunt, Lady Warwick, by her great-aunt, Gertrude, Duchess of Bedford, and by her mother's sister, Louisa, second wife of William, first Marquess of Lansdowne. Lady Lansdowne's death in 1789 made no difference to this arrangement, for Caroline and her aunt, Elizabeth Vernon, a girl of approximately her own age, took up their abode permanently with the widower. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
