Book excerpt: The life of Edward Hunter Snow (1865–1932), a leader in second-generation Mormon Utah, closely paralleled the early-twentieth-century development of the West. Born in St. George, Utah, to Julia Spencer and Mormon apostle Erastus Snow, Edward Hunter Snow was instrumental both in the development of southern Utah and in the growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during a period of rapid change. In Edward Hunter Snow, the first biography of the man, noted western and Mormon historian Thomas G. Alexander presents Snow as a servant of family, church, state, and nation. Offering insights into the LDS Church around the turn of the twentieth century, Alexander narrates the events of Snow’s missions to the American South, including encounters with the Ku Klux Klan in the 1880s, and to New York. As president of the St. George Stake and church leader, Snow sought to reshape the LDS Church’s place in Utah—confining its influence to religious and cultural practices and avoiding politics. Although he was involved in numerous causes throughout his life, Snow was especially dedicated to education. A graduate of what is now Brigham Young University, he worked to ensure that the state’s children would have access to quality education. Snow founded what is now Dixie State College and, as a state senator, introduced legislation to establish what is now Southern Utah University. As the nineteenth century gave way to the twentieth, Snow helped St. George grow from an isolated cotton colony to an important stop on the main automobile route from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles. Alexander shows that rugged, southwestern Utah’s flowering into cultural and commercial maturity was due to the foresight and dedication of second-generation pioneers like Edward Hunter Snow.

This dynastic hierarchy meets in private; neither its minutes nor the church's finances are available for public review. Members are reassured by public relations spokesmen that all is well and that harmony prevails among these brethren. But by interviewing former church aides, examining hundreds of diaries, and drawing from his own past experience as an insider within the Latter-day Saint historical department, D. Michael Quinn presents a fuller view. His extensive research documents how the governing apostles, seventies, and presiding bishops are likely to be at loggerheads, as much as united. Where they have become convinced that God has spoken, they have set aside personal differences, offered unqualified support, and spoken with a unified voice. This potential for change, when coupled with the tempering effect of competing viewpoints, is something Quinn finds encouraging about Mormonism. But one should not assume that these men are infallible or work in anything approaching uninterrupted unanimity.

Book excerpt: Tony Rosenthal is probably best known for his landmark, fifteen-foot high CorTen cube, poised on its tip, which stands permanently on Astor Place in downtown Manhattan. Yet at the time it was installed, in 1967, and soon after accepted as the first permanent contemporary outdoor public sculpture by the City of New York, he had recieved many other public commissions, and had also been produceing smaller-scale studio sculpture of distinction for nearly two decades, first in Los Angeles and then in New York. Since the late fifties he has been experimenting in a rather wide range of abstraction, from monolithic structures to more open geometric forms, often with elegant surface detailing concerned with effects of light and movement. Notable among Rosenthal's important commissions has been "Cranbrook Ingathering," a maze-like structural environment set on the campus of the Michigan design center; he considers the work his homage to Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen and other modernist giants of architecture and design who had been fellows at the academy with Rosenthal. Another remarkable work that deeply stirred public attention recently is his moving "Holocaust Memorial," made for the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo; it combines a rather austere, ten-foot high, stainless steel structure and specific texts and imagery on steel "pages" memorializing, and personalizing, the loss of the Six Million. Since 1997 Rosenthal has embarked on a more personal method of creating abstract, yet also at time suggestively figural, sculpture consisting of small, bent stell bars shaped by hand. He has also linked these elements together and combined them almost haphazardly, creating arich accumulation of powerfully interacting formal units. Undaunted by his advanced years, Rosenthal seems to be just getting started in his recent work, and testing new and challenging directions with vigor and concision. --S.H. Book excerpt: This monograph tracks the development of the socio-economic stance of early Mormonism, an American Millenarian Restorationist movement, through the first fourteen years of the church’s existence, from its incorporation in the spring of 1830 in New York, through Ohio and Missouri and Illinois, up to the lynching of its prophet Joseph Smith Jr in the summer of 1844. Mormonism used a new revelation, the Book of Mormon, and a new apostolically inspired church organization to connect American antiquities to covenant-theological salvation history. The innovative religious strategy was coupled with a conservative socio-economic stance that was supportive of technological innovation. This analysis of the early Mormon church uses case studies focused on socio-economic problems, such as wealth distribution, the financing of publication projects, land trade and banking, and caring for the poor. In order to correct for the agentive overtones of standard Mormon historiography, both in its supportive and in its detractive stance, the explanatory models of social time from Fernand Braudel’s classic work on the Mediterranean are transferred to and applied in the nineteenth-century American context.

Book excerpt: This collection includes family correspondence, autobiographical and biographical material of Edward H. Snow, journals, notebooks, documents, and miscellaneous papers. There are also newspaper clippings and published materials about Snow, as well as several photographs of Snow family members. The correspondence is largely from Snow to his wife, Hannah, and was written at the time of Snow's mission to the Southern States in the 1880's. There are also letters from Snow's father, Erastus Snow, to Snow and Snow's wife. There is a sympathy letter from Heber J. Grant to Snow's family written on the occasion of Snow's death. Much of the correspondence has been transcribed and bound together; these letters are also included in the collection. The journals cover his mission to the Southern States and his mission to the Eastern States. There is a souvenir book of the first Utah State Legislature, of which Snow was a member, and there are newspaper clippings and articles relating to Snow's work with the Utah State Tax Commission, St. George Temple, and Southern Utah State College.
