Book excerpt: The nineteenth century, which saw the triumph of the idea of progress and improvement, saw also the triumph of science as a political and cultural force. In England, as science and its methods claimed privilege and space, its language acquired the vocabulary of religion. The new ’creed’ of science embraced what John Tyndall called the ’scientific movement’; it was, in the language of T.H. Huxley, a militant creed. The ’march’ of invention, the discoveries of chemistry, and the wonders of steam and electricity culminated in a crusade against ignorance and unbelief. It was a creed that looked to its own apostolic succession from Copernicus, Galileo and the martyrs of the ’scientific revolution’. Yet, it was a creed whose doctrines were divisive, and whose convictions resisted. Alongside arguments for materialism, utility, positivism, and evolutionary naturalism, persisted reservations about the nature of man, the role of ethics, and the limits of scientific method. These essays discuss leading strategists in the scientific movement of late-Victorian England. At the same time, they show how ’science established’ served not only the scientific community, but also the interests of imperial and colonial powers.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Collected Writings on Education: My Pedagogic Creed + The School and Society + The Child and the Curriculum + Moral Principles in Education + Interest and Effort in Education + Democracy and Education" contains 6 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Dewey's educational theories were presented in My Pedagogic Creed, The School and Society, The Child and the Curriculum, Democracy and Education and Experience and Education. Throughout these writings, several recurrent themes ring true; Dewey continually argues that education and learning are social and interactive processes, and thus the school itself is a social institution through which social reform can and should take place. In addition, he believed that students thrive in an environment where they are allowed to experience and interact with the curriculum, and all students should have the opportunity to take part in their own learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fifth and concluding volume of The Early Works of John Dewey is the only one of the series made up entirely of essays. The appear-ance during the four-year period, 1895-98, of thirty-eight items amply indicates that Dewey continued to maintain a high level of published out-put. These were the years of Dewey's most extensive work and involvement at the University of Chicago. Like its predecessors in this series, this volume presents a clear text, free of interpretive or reference material. Apparatus, including references, corrections, and emendations, is confined to appendix material. Fredson Bowers, the Consulting Textual Editor, has provided an essay on the textual principles and procedures, and William P. McKenzie, Professor of Philoso-phy and Education at Southern Illinois University, has written an introduc-tion identifying the thread connecting the apparently diffuse material in the many articles of this volume--Dewey's attempt to unite philosophy with psychology and sociology and with education.

Book excerpt: This volume traces the history of Western philosophy of education through the Modern Era. The period between 1850 and 1914 was a time of struggle for justice and opportunity, during which influential thinkers – among them, John Dewey, Maria Montessori, and W.E.B. Du Bois – addressed how education is fundamentally connected to questions of what it means to be human. Readers will find a provocative collection of educational theories and concepts that point to the inherent value of the diversity of human experience and background. Each chapter illuminates how the ideas of the modern era hold promise for a meaningful re-envisioning of educational practice and policy today. About A History of Western Philosophy of Education: An essential resource for researchers, scholars, and students of education, this five-volume set that traces the development of philosophy of education through Western culture and history. Focusing on philosophers who have theorized education and its implementation, the series constitutes a fresh, dynamic, and developing view of educational philosophy. It expands our educational possibilities by reinvigorating philosophy's vibrant critical tradition, connecting old and new perspectives, and identifying the continuity of critique and reconstruction. It also includes a timeline showing major historical events, including educational initiatives and the publication of noteworthy philosophical works.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the definitive edition of Dewey's early work opens with his tribute to George Sylvester Morris, the former teacher who had brought Dewey to the University of Michigan. Morris's death in 1889 left vacant the Department of Philosophy chairmanship and led to Dewey's returning to fill that post after a year's stay at Minnesota. Appearing here, among all his writings from 1889 through 1892, are Dewey's earliest comprehensive statements on logic and his first book on ethics. Dewey's marked copy of the galley-proof for his important article The Present Position of Logical Theory, recently discovered among the papers of the Open Court Publishing Company, is used as the basis for the text, making available for the first time his final changes and corrections. The textual studies that make The Early Works unique among American philosophical editions are reported in detail. One of these, A Note on Applied Psychology, documents the fact that Dewey did not co-author this book frequently attributed to him. Six brief unsigned articles written in 1891 for a University of Michigan student publication, the Inlander, have been identified as Dewey's and are also included in this volume. In both style and content, these articles reflect Dewey's conviction that philosophy should be used as a means of illuminating the contemporary scene; thus they add a new dimension to present knowledge of his early writing.

Book excerpt: Teacher Education in a Transnational World brings together specialists from various disciplines and scholars with policy-making and high-level government and administrative experience to discuss the historical, sociological, and philosophical issues associated with teacher education in a global context. Edited by Rosa Bruno-Jofré and James Scott Johnston, two leading scholars of the history and philosophy of education, this collection offers both analytical and practical insights into the present and future state of teacher education. Among the topics examined are paradigmatic changes in teacher education, the impact of the Bologna process in Europe, Indigenous education, and state policies in a transnational context. With contributors from nine countries on four continents, Teacher Education in a Transnational World offers a genuinely international interdisciplinary examination of the challenges and opportunities associated with teacher education in the twenty-first century.
