Book excerpt: L'éducation thérapeutique du patient (ETP) permet au patient atteint de maladie chronique d'acquérir des connaissances et compétences, d'adapter ses comportements afin améliorer certains indicateurs de santé, sa qualité de vie et diminuer d'éventuelles complications médicales. Le diabète de type 1 (DT1) est l'une des maladies chroniques les plus fréquentes chez l'enfant et l'adolescent, l'ETP fait partie intégrante de son traitement.L'objectif de notre étude était d'identifier s'il existait des différences entre les enfants diabétiques de type 1 suivis à Bordeaux pendant l'année 2010 participant à l'ETP et ceux n'y participant pas. Pour cela, nous avons décrit les caractéristiques sociales (sexe, âge, niveau scolaire, lieu de vie, situation familiale, catégorie socioprofessionnelle des parents) et médicales (ancienneté du diabète, schéma thérapeutique, taux d'HbA1c, médecin référent, nombre de consultations et d'hospitalisations de jour, propositions d'ETP lors des consultations et des hospitalisations de jour) des enfants diabétiques de type 1. Puis, nous avons décrit les activités d'ETP à savoir les consultations individuelles avec les médecins, la puéricultrice, la diététicienne, le binôme diététicienne / puéricultrice, la psychologue et les ateliers collectifs. Enfin, nous avons comparé les caractéristiques sociales et médicales des enfants ayant participé à l'ETP à ceux n'y ayant pas participé. Nous n'avons pas retrouvé de différence de caractéristiques sociales entre les enfants ayant participé à l'ETP et ceux n'y ayant pas participé. Concernant les données médicales, nous n'avons pas retrouvé de différence pour le taux et le nombre de dosage d'HbA1c, le nombre de consultations et d'hospitalisations de jour. Par contre, nous avons retrouvé une différence pour l'ancienneté du diabète, le schéma thérapeutique et le médecin référent. L'ETP devrait être proposée systématiquement à tous les enfants diabétiques de type 1 quel que soit leur médecin référent, la qualité de leur suivi médical, leurs résultats d'HbA1c et leur stade d'évolution de la maladie.
