It would be a sounder and a nobler thing to fight for a Roisin Dubh of ﬂesh and blood whom we can clearly visualise than for a will-o'-the-wisp, a phantom clothed in a tricolor of whom we do not know whether she may turn out a beautiful queen or a hide ous grinning monster or worst of all perhaps a colourless and vapid suburban lady. Reconstruction for us must mean more than grants i-n aid and salaries to innumerable fat Controllers, or a discreet burying of the Labour tomahawk. It is not, I entreat the public to understand, the exposure of Mr. Carlile, or of any of the Commissioners of the Board of National Education. That object would never have induced me to take up the pen. The conduct of the Commissioners is a matter quite incidental to the question, and on which, if I could have avoided it, I should have been glad to pronounce no opinion. My object was the exposure of the system, and of that system the Commissioners form but a small part. The evil lies in the machine, not in the men who work it. They of course become implicated by their position, but if they were changed again and again, the mischief would remain unmitigated. That evil lies in uniting together men of opposite religious opinions, and committing to them the superintendence of popular education. That is the inherent vice of the system, and wherever that vice is repeated, the same results will appear. It is all the more necessary to bring this before the public at the present time, that an attempt is made to infuse the venom of this system both into England and Scotland. A struggle has commenced; and with the same party, a struggle to establish Liberalism in education. Liberalism in religion (or the Voluntary System), has for some years been obtruded upon us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Education in Ireland A Motion, made by an Irish Member at the close of the last Parliamentary session, which received little and rather slighting notice at the time, has raised some issues, both practical and theoretical, in the province of education, of very grave importance. The motion was a demand for a Charter for a Roman Catholic College established some twelve years ago in Dublin, and commonly known as "The Catholic University," though hitherto without the power of granting degrees. It was met on the part of the Government by a counter proposal, to the effect, that, instead of constituting a new university in Ireland by the grant of a charter, the Catholic establishment should be affiliated as a distinct college to one of the universities which now exist, to wit, the Queen's. This compromise was eagerly embraced by the mover, and in general by the representatives of the Catholic party in Parliament, Mr. Hennessy being the single dissentient. The precise form which the Government scheme is destined to take is not yet known; but it has been shadowed forth in a series of announcements which purport to be authoritative, and which - as they proceed from the section of Catholics whom the concession is designed to conciliate, and who have certainly through their leaders been in communication with the Government - may be assumed to embody, with more or less exactness, the principal features of the pending arrangement; and the prospect has elicited a discussion which at all events exhibits very clearly the hopes and the fears of the supporters and the opponents of the proposed change. D. 1536 to 1816, Exemplified in Documents Collected for Lectures to Postgraduate Classes With an Introduction The texts in this volume have been collected for class-work with Advanced Students in the Department of Education, at University College, Dublin. A Postgraduate Training Course in the Theory and Practice of Education must necessarily afford but a limited place to the study of the History of Education. But with such students and in such a Course it is desirable that some important historical issue in Education be worked at in its documentary sources; and such an issue may best be sought in the History of Educational Practice within their own country. The subject here dealt with has these qualifications, and has the further advantage that it affords an exceptionally apposite introduction to, and basis of comparison with, the special subject treated in a further Course for the Degree of M.A. in Educational Science, on the Development (since the French Revolution) of State Control of Education in France, Germany, and Great Britain. The due limits of the present subject precluded any treatment of other Irish branches of the History of Education within the period. Such are (1) the Irish Colleges on the Continent, A.D. 1590-1789, and (2) the Schools of Irish law, history, and poetry, conducted by many scholar-families, lingering on in one or two cases till 1750. Such families were the O'Clerys in Tyrconnell, the O'Davorens of Cahermacnaughten and Noughaval in Clare (1350-1600), and the MacEgans (see Documents, Part I. No. 34), who for fifteen generations maintained higher studies in Irish at Duniry, Park, and Tullach-na-Daly in Galway, Ballymacegan (Redwood) in Lower Ormond, and Annaghmeadle and Castletown in Ely O'Carroll. This work depended on their possession of the lands assigned them for such service by the great septs, Celtic or Norman, educated by them 'in poetry and well-proven law'; and so they were sore stricken by the vast confiscations of the 17th century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education in Ireland: Report of Speeches in the House of Commons, on Mr. Hamilton's Motion on the Above Subject, August 21, 1848 The question of Scriptural Education in Ireland is presented under a new aspect, since the principles on which public assistance is given have left no denomination of religionists unaided in England; nor any in Ireland, except the members of the Irish branch of the United Church by law established, whose conscientious convictions do not admit of their joining the Irish National System. The nation may yet feel ashamed of this singular and exclusive injustice, so much at variance with the honest fairness of the British people. It is evident that the real state of the case is not at present generally understood. In the following pages will be found a special and revised Report of the speeches of the two Members for the University of Dublin, on the Motion of Mr. Hamilton on behalf of the Church Education Society in Ireland, brought forward in the House of Commons on the 21st of August last, with the answers of Lord John Russell and Sir William Somerville on the part of the Government; to which are appended two articles from the "Morning Herald" and one from the "Times" on the subject. The main arguments and facts of the case, and comments upon them, are thus fairly submitted, in the hope that a sound and correct judgment may be formed on this important question, which involves principles materially affecting every Protestant in the empire. If I cannot reasonably suppose that they will have much inﬂuence upon others, it will be a satisfaction to my own mind not to be misunderstood on points so frequently discussed and on which it is so painful either to give an apparent consent by silence, or to engage in endless disputation.
