Book excerpt: Addressing the alarmingly low rate of job retention in classroom education, this guide offers practical advice to administrators and teachers for avoiding teacher burnout and increasing teacher satisfaction and performance. Since the quality of the classroom teacher is the single most important factor in predicting student success, retention of high-quality teachers is essential to student achievement. This discourse affirms that systemic change can be achieved by applying the strength-based approach of Developmental Assets(R) to the teacher-administrator relationship, and demonstrates the parallels between a nurturing environment for students and a nurturing environment for teachers. The common adversarial teacher-administrator dichotomy is abandoned in favor of multiple levels of accountability and change, and mutual goals for individual teachers and administrators are advanced. When every stakeholder in the school environment sees teacher job satisfaction as a win-win situation resulting in retention and higher student achievement, staff, students, and administrators can work together to build great places to teach and learn. The accompanying CD-ROM includes reproducible forms and other tools for implementation.

Book excerpt: Higher education systems have changed all over the world, but not all have changed in the same ways. Although system growth and so-called massification have been worldwide themes, there have been system-specific changes as well. It is these changes that have an important impact on academic work and on the opinions of the staff that work in higher education. The academic profession has a key role to play in producing the next generations of knowledge workers, and this task will be more readily achieved by a contented academic workforce working within well-resourced teaching and research institutions. This volume tells the story of academics’ opinions about the changes in their own countries. The Changing Academic Profession (CAP) survey has provided researchers and policy makers with the capacity to compare the academic profession around the world. Built around national analyses of the survey this book examines academics’ opinions on a range of issues to do with their job satisfaction. Following an introduction that considers the job satisfaction literature as it relates to higher education, country-based chapters examine aspects of job satisfaction within each country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to change one's job is usually preceded by a process of job evaluation and determining alternative employment opportunities. Dissatisfaction with the workplace can be a strong incentive to seek alternative opportunities. This study focuses on the role played by job satisfaction, morale and HIV/AIDS in educator attrition. The responses of educators who considered leaving their jobs were compared to the responses of those preferring to stay. Findings reveal that job dissatisfaction linked to poor salaries and limited possibilities for career development, as well as the lack of status and respect attached to the profession, may push educators out of the classroom. The low morale amongst potential leavers reflects this dissatisfaction, as well as the stress caused by curriculum transformation and the emotional impact of HIV/AIDS. Factors encouraging educators to stay in their profession included their passion for developing young people and strong collegial relationships. However, many also feel trapped by limited job alternatives, and may embark on withdrawal options such as increased absenteeism or lower outputs. It is crucially important to deal with the sources of educator frustration, lest the result becomes deteriorating service provision and quality in South African education.

This has caused governments to announce the creation of programs and developments in the higher education sector to upgrade South-East Asia to a leading education hub. Moreover, many governments declared that they would work on the insurance of learning to increase the quality of the degrees and the teaching itself. This has led many to question the results of these declarations. Higher Education Challenges in South-East Asia provides an overview of what has been happening over the last ten years in higher education in South-East Asia. It also works to solve the challenges in modern education such as the impacts of digitalization, globalization, and Generation Y and Z learning styles. Covering topics that include globalization, educational technologies, and comparative teaching, this book impacts academic institutions, policymakers, government officials, university and college administrators and leaders, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: Job satisfaction is a central concept in work and organizational psychology as it is associated with important individual as well as organizational outcomes. Work is the number one activity that occupies most of adults' waking time. Being satisfied with one's job, which is defined as a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one's job or job experience, is related to important work-related and health-related outcomes (e.g., higher job performance, organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior, life satisfaction, lower absenteeism and lower counterproductive work behavior). This book discusses determinants of job satisfaction as well as workplace implications and the impact job satisfaction has on the psychological well-being of individuals.
