Book excerpt: The British Romantic poets were among the first to realise the centrality of the Divine Comedy for the evolution of the European epic. This study explores the significance of Dante for Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats and William Blake. What was their idea of Dante? Why did they feel the need to approach his Christian epic on the afterlife? This study aims to answer these questions by focusing on the three poets' preoccupation with form and language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An author writes with a certain type of reader in mind. Determining the identity of this «implicit reader» serves to reveal a text's strategies and meaning. Laurence Sterne's Sentimental Journey and Ugo Foscolo's linguistically faithful Italian translation of it have different implicit readers, and hence radically different meanings. Unlike Sterne, who could be relatively confident of the competence of his English readers, Foscolo, because of the political, cultural, and linguistic fragmentation of the Italy of his time, addressed a reader of uncertain status, both in his translation and in his own earlier novel, Le ultime lettere di Jacopo Ortis. These works are characterized by dialogical tensions that revolve around the postulation of different implicit readers. Therefore, a reader-oriented analysis is particularly illuminating in deciphering them. Conversely, the works themselves constitute an account and an illumination of the importance of the problem of readership in literary criticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary with the Romantic generation, peer of Keats, Holderlin, and Goethe, and forerunner of Valéry and Pound, Ugo Foscolo is nevertheless little known outside Italy. In an endeavor to "discover" this exemplary European poet for English-speaking readers, and to "rediscover" him for Italian readers, Glauco Cambon examines both textually and contextually Foscolo's major works and their inextricable connection with his life, his philosophy, and his aesthetic principles. Book Synopsis Ugo Foscolo and English Culture by : Sandra Parmegiani
Download or read book Ugo Foscolo and English Culture written by Sandra Parmegiani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The history of the literary relations between Italy and England has its most celebrated early modern representative in Ugo Foscolo (1778-1827). Foscolo's translation of Laurence Sterne's A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy is often regarded as the benchmark of his English experience, but there is more - around and beyond his relationship with Sterne - that can be uncovered. With over 3,000 letters spanning three decades, Foscolo's correspondence represents a unique perspective from which to monitor his literary, philosophical, and political views. The 'Epistolario' is also a space in which Foscolo engages with literary, philosophical, and moral questions, and a place where he exercises an often private form of literary criticism. These are letters which ultimately produce one of the most complete yet most composite self-portraits in the history of modern Italian autobiography. In the first comprehensive and historicized reading of Foscolo's correspondence, Sandra Parmegiani reveals the rich and complex relations between the Italian writer and the literature, philosophy, and culture of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England."
Book Synopsis Carlo Emilio Gadda by : Manuela Bertone
Download or read book Carlo Emilio Gadda written by Manuela Bertone and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by leading Gadda scholars, the essays capture the complexities that characterize Gadda's narrative. His plurilingualism, pastiches, and narrative entanglements are revealed both as a revolt against conventional literary style and as the expression of a chaotic, painful, and labyrinthine world inhabited by a fragmented subject. Gadda emerges as a transgressive novelist, a humorist, and a mannerist who continuously deforms language through parodic and comic modes.

Book Synopsis Archaeology of the Unconscious by : Alessandra Aloisi
Download or read book Archaeology of the Unconscious written by Alessandra Aloisi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reconstructing the birth and development of the notion of ‘unconscious’, historians of ideas have heavily relied on the Freudian concept of Unbewussten, retroactively projecting the psychoanalytic unconscious over a constellation of diverse cultural experiences taking place in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries between France and Germany. Archaeology of the Unconscious aims to challenge this perspective by adopting an unusual and thought-provoking viewpoint as the one offered by the Italian case from the 1770s to the immediate aftermath of WWI, when Italo Svevo’s La coscienza di Zeno provides Italy with the first example of a ‘psychoanalytic novel’. Italy’s vibrant culture of the long nineteenth century, characterised by the sedimentation, circulation, intersection, and synergy of different cultural, philosophical, and literary traditions, proves itself to be a privileged object of inquiry for an archaeological study of the unconscious; a study whose object is not the alleged ‘origin’ of a pre-made theoretical construct, but rather the stratifications by which that specific construct was assembled. In line with Michel Foucault’s Archéologie du savoir (1969), this volume will analyze the formation and the circulation, across different authors and texts, of a network of ideas and discourses on interconnected themes, including dreams, memory, recollection, desire, imagination, fantasy, madness, creativity, inspiration, magnetism, and somnambulism. Alongside questioning pre-given narratives of the ‘history of the unconscious’, this book will employ the Italian ‘difference’ as a powerful perspective from whence to address the undeveloped potentialities of the pre-Freudian unconscious, beyond uniquely psychoanalytical viewpoints.
