Book excerpt: This book takes the reader on a philosophical quest to understand the dark side of emotions. The chapters are devoted to the analysis of negative emotions and are organized in a historical manner, spanning the period from ancient Greece to the present time. Each chapter addresses analytical questions about specific emotions generally considered to be unfavorable and classified as negative. The general aim of the volume is to describe the polymorphous and context-sensitive nature of negative emotions as well as changes in the ways people have interpreted these emotions across different epochs. The editors speak of ‘the dark side of the emotions’ because their goal is to capture the ambivalent – unstable and shadowy – aspects of emotions. A number of studies have taken the categorial distinction between positive and negative emotions for granted, suggesting that negative emotions are especially significant for our psychological experience because they signal difficult situations. For this reason, the editors stress the importance of raising analytical questions about the valence of particular emotions and focussing on the features that make these emotions ambivalent: how – despite their negativity – such emotions may turn out to be positive. This opens up a perspective in which each emotion can be understood as a complex interlacing of negative and positive properties. The collection presents a thoughtful dialogue between philosophy and contemporary scientific research. It offers the reader insight by illuminating the dark side of the emotions.

Book excerpt: The Exodus has a risky and combative character that links individuals to their unconscious, to the uncertainty of their reality, and to the possibility of the disturbing event of the incalculable arrival of the Other. This encounter with the unknown does not expect a messianic salvation but a human solution, which is aware that change requires the abandonment of self-referential identities. This eccentricity is more than evasive desertion or escapism, but an experiment with new modes of organizing community that grows on the responsibilities that go with it. This collected volume gathers contemporary philosophical perspectives on the Exodus, examining the story’s symbolic potentials and dynamics in the light of current social political events. The imagination of the Promised Land, the figure of the migrant, the provisional and precarious dwelling of the camp, the promise of a better future or the gradual estrangement from inherited habits are all challenges of our time that are already conceptualized in the Exodus. The authors reaffirm the pertinence of the story by addressing the fundamental link between the ancient narrative and the human condition of the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major, defining polarity in Euripidean drama, wisdom and folly, has never so far been the subject of a book-length study. The volume aims at filling this gap. Virtually all Euripidean characters, from gods to slaves, are subject to some aspect of folly and claim at least some measure of wisdom. The playwright’s sophisticated handling of the tradition and the pervasive ambiguity in his work add extra layers of complexity. Wisdom and folly become inextricably intertwined, as gods pursue their agendas and mortal characters struggle to control their destiny, deal with their troubles, confront their past, and chart their future. Their amoral or immoral behavior and various limitations often affect also their families and communities. Leading international scholars discuss wisdom and folly from various thematic angles and theoretical perspectives. A final section deals with the polarity’s reception in vase-painting and literature. The result is a wealth of fresh insights into moral, social and historical issues. The volume is of interest to students and scholars of classical drama and its reception, of philosophy, and of rhetoric

Book excerpt: Relating Narratives is a major new work by the philosopher and feminist thinker Adriana Cavarero. First published in Italian to widespread acclaim, Relating Narratives is a fascinating and challenging new account of the relationship between selfhood and narration. Drawing a diverse array of thinkers from both the philosophical and the literary tradition, from Sophocles and Homer to Hannah Arendt, Karen Blixen, Walter Benjamin and Borges, Adriana Cadarero's theory of the `narratable self' shows how narrative models in philosophy and literature can open new ways of thinking about formation of human identities. By showing how each human being has a unique story that can be told about them, Adriana Cavarero inaugurates an important shift in thinking about subjectivity and identity which relies not upon categorical or discursive norms, but rather seeks to account for `who' each one of us uniquely is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's relations with the world of cinema. Far from being an occasional occupation, García Márquez's film work forms an intrinsic part of his overall aesthetic and literary poetics. The book's primary aim is to present a detailed study of Garcia Márquez's wide-ranging filmography, which has never received a comprehensive, systematic analysis. Rocco argues that it should be recognised as an integral part of the author's narrative output, and brought into the mainstream of studies concerning his literary activity. The first part of the book reconstructs the trajectory of Garcia Marquez's career in cinema and his connections with the world of film. The second part looks at all the screenplays written by García Márquez on which actual films have been based. These are examined chronologically, but also analysed according to thematic and aesthetic concerns and placed in relation to the novels and short stories with which they are 'twinned' in terms of the film product. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly is JUNGIANEUM/Yearbook? It is a yearbook, of course! Is it also a monograph, an almanac, a journal, and a poetry book? Indeed! JUNGIANEUM/Yearbook expands our thinking with papers and poetry informed by analytical psychology and neo-Jungian studies. Its uniqueness and importance to the Jungian community lies in the work of the individuals contributing. JUNGIANEUM/Yearbook is divided into three parts: papers, poetry, and a Rite de sortie. Many themes are conveyed in this issue (2022): the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the power of a cultural complex in Israel, the Shakespearean concept of “Time is out of joint” and Pasolini’s Oedipus Re, AIDS, death and the analyst, transgender individuation, sufferings and individuation, personal memories of the Yom Kippur War, the patient/analyst confrontation in the analytical room and the problematic behavior of the analyst, mothers and fathers, leaving, returning, devotion, new birth, the wait and the end of certainties. JUNGIANEUM/Yearbook is one of many initiatives by Jungianeum: Contemporary Initiatives for Analytical Psychology and Neo-Jungian Studies. Under this umbrella, since 2022, Stefano Carpani developed a series of initiatives called: JUNGIANEUM/books, JUNGIANEUM/talks, JUNGIANEUM/ masterclasses, JUNGIANEUM/biennale and more. In summer 2022, in partnership with Chiron Publications, Carpani launched a series called JUNGIANEUM/books: Re-Covered Classics in Analytical Psychology, aimed at (re)publishing masterpieces in analytical psychology that, for different reasons, are out of the market and find difficulty in getting (re)published. As of January 2023, PSYCHOSOCIAL WEDNESDAYS were incorporated under the umbrella of JUNGIANEUM/talks. In September 2023, Pacifica Graduate Institute (CA/USA) and Jungianeum will release a PGI Graduate Certificate Course: Contemporary Analytical Psychology and Neo-Jungian Studies: The Relevance of C.G. Jung to the Socio-Cultural Challenges of the 21st Century. As per Carpani’s Youtube interviews, published books, and papers, these initiatives will continue to help Jung’s psychology become visible and audible, therefore, impactful for individuals and collectives, who benefit, respectively, from Jungian therapy and theory in shaping policy and society.
