Book excerpt: Hapke examines how writers attempted to turn an outcast into a heroine in literature otherwise known for its puritanical attitude toward the fallen woman. Hapke reevaluates Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, discusses neglected prostitution fiction by authors Joaquin Miller, Edgar Fawcett, and Harold Frederic, and surveys progressive white slave novels.

Book Synopsis Adaptions of Western Literature in Meiji Japan by : J. Miller
Download or read book Adaptions of Western Literature in Meiji Japan written by J. Miller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-12-06 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines three examples of late nineteenth-century Japanese adaptations of Western literature: a biography of U.S. Grant recasting him as a Japanese warrior, a Victorian novel reset as oral performance, and an American melodrama redone as a serialized novel promoting the reform of Japanese theater. Written from a comparative perspective, it argues that adaptation (hon'an) was a valid form of contemporary Japanese translation that fostered creative appropriation across many genres and among a diverse group of writers and artists. In addition, it invites readers to reconsider adaptation in the context of translation theory.

Book Synopsis On the Street where You Live: Victoria's early roads and railways by : Danda Humphreys
Download or read book On the Street where You Live: Victoria's early roads and railways written by Danda Humphreys and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2000 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1800s, Victoria grew from a fur-trading post into a provincial capital--the jewel in British Columbia's golden crown. Meanwhile, many of the early residents, happy to leave the Hudson's Bay Company behind, followed simple trails from the fort or discovered new routes of their own. In her first book, Danda Humphreys introduced readers to some of the people who forged those pioneer pathways. Now she takes us another step back in time to the roads and railways that connected the original city's core to today's suburbs. From Saanich to Sooke, street names tell stories of intrigue and adventure: Rowland Avenue, named for the farm labourer with a sinister sideline: hangman for the HBC. Joan Crescent, where coal baron Robert Dunsmuir's widow once resided in solitary splendour in a castle called Craigdarroch. Sidney Avenue, close to where the Brethour brothers donated land for the northern terminus of the "Cordwood Express," first train to link the city with the Saanich Peninsula and the islands in the Strait of Georgia. In this second book in her On the Street Where You Live trilogy, Danda once again combines her passion for the past with a penchant for lively prose to bring you stories about Victoria's pioneers. You know the streets; now meet the people--their lives, their loves and the legends they left behind.

Book Synopsis The Parvenu's Plot by : Stephanie Foote
Download or read book The Parvenu's Plot written by Stephanie Foote and published by University of New Hampshire Press. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this very readable volume, Stephanie Foote gathers a range of print sources--from novels by Edith Wharton and Henry James to gossip columns, fashion magazines, popular novels, and etiquette manuals--to ask how the realist period understood the individual experience of class. Examining the female arriviste (the parvenu of the title) in turn-of-the-century New York (where a supposedly stable elite was threatened by the nouveaux riches), Foote shows how class became more than just an economic position: it was a fundamental part of individual identity, exemplified by a shifting set of social behaviors that form the core of many nineteenth-century novels. She persuasively presents the female parvenu as a key figure in turn-of-the-century culture that embodies the volatility of social standing and the continuing project of structuring and justifying it.
