God the Father made it ready for His first children - made it ready for them before they were created. I can imagine with what loving thought He prepared this home for them. He made it very beautiful. He gathered into it all the loveliest things of all the earth - trees, plants, flowers, and fruits. Streams of water rippled through it and there were birds and animals of all kinds in it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Garden of Eden Ummer days have come, those soft, sensuous, dreamy days of red and gold, with veils of silver mist at sunrise and skeins of purple clouds at twilight. The air is hazy with the smoke of fires burning on the hillsides The stems of the young birches show white in the fast deep ening shadows; green leaves strew the ground, and tall flowers flame in the garden beds. The rising sun burns its way through a low lying mist that hides the river, and ashes its search light rays over the sleeping city. The glimmering tops of the tall chimneys catch the signal and answer in belching clouds of gray smoke. That turn to gold as they oat upward in the morning air. The long row of many eyed houses, cresting the river front, blush in the dazzling light and throw countless smoke flags from numerous chimneys. Suddenly the molten ball swings clear of the purple haze and floods the city with a tremulous light. The vanes of the church steeples flash and blaze. The slanting roofs, wet with the night dew, glisten like burnished silver. The budding trees fill the air with their sweet incense, flaming pink and yellow, their tender branches quivering in the rosy light. As summer approaches, the rays of the Northern sun filters with mellowed softness through the quiet air. The yellow stubble promises possibilities in the way of prairie chicken and quail. The gentle whispering wind ru ies the cool waters, and dry, reed y cinders sing to gether a whispered monotone. As the days grow in length clangorous hosts of wild fowl visit every river and lake. Then it is that the keen eyes of thousands of Sportsmen brighten in anticipation and the much loved Operation of looking over the shells begins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When Mother Lets Us Travel in Italy Perhaps the wanderings of an American family in Italy will interest not only those who can follow in their footsteps, but also those who must stay at home. The journeying of an entire family is rarely a mere holiday, and in the case of Mr. And Mrs. Car ter, and their children, business of an important nature dictates their route. Mr. Carter has been sent abroad by his native state, to study the design ing and building of foreign cities. Sometimes, he is able to make his work interest ing to his children; often he can allow himself a holiday, and join them in excursions to places that hold little promise of help to those who are dream ing of a City Beautiful in Texas. It is to be hoped that the Italian experiences of Alice, Jack and the twins, will lead their friends to follow their fortunes into France and Holland, and the other fascinating countries of Europe. Marion Crawford, the Children of the King a Tale of Southern Italy Lay your course south-east half east from the Campanella. If the weather is what it should be in late summer you will have a fresh breeze on the starboard quarter from ten in the morning till four or five o'clock in the afternoon. Sail straight across the wide gulf of Salerno, and when you are over give the Licosa Point a wide berth, for the water is shallow and there are reefs along shore. Moreover there is no light on Licosa Point, and many a good ship has gone to pieces there in dark winter nights when the surf is rolling in. If the wind holds you may run on to Palinuro in a long day before the evening calm comes on, and the water turns oily and full of pink and green and violet streaks, and the sun settles down in the north-west. He turned crimson, puffed out his cheeks with rage, and squared his shoulders in fierce determination to crush me. Those about him scowled on me darkly and muttered curses on my insolence. I believe, Del Mayno said scornfully, that you are the English condottiere who fights the Prince's battles for hire. That is all I know concerning you. As for your name, it may be John Hawkwood or Giovanni della Guglia - do you think I have no better use for my thoughts than the remembering of how you style yourself? What are you doing here before me, pray? Did you think, because you-heard me speak your name, that I called you? Not I. Begone, then, and if you must have company, talk to my lackeys yonder - they are nearer your rank than I am. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tophet and Eden: Hell and Paradise; In Imitation of Dante's Inferno and Paradiso; From the Hebrew of Immanuel Ben Ben Solomon Romi, Dante's Contemporary The accompanying effort is no more than what it professes to be, namely, a tiny leaf added to the ever green laurel-wreath which is placed upon the Altar of Time to the memory of Italy's greatest poet - author of the Divina Commedia, the sexcentenary of whose death occurs in the September of this year. In presenting, as far as I know for the first time in the English language, a literal translation (in rhymed prose) of the Hebrew rhymed-prosed imitation by Immanuel Romi of his friend Dante's immortal work, I merely wish to give an example (to be judged by outward form rather than by details) of the literary influence which Dante had upon this Hebrew writer, himself one of the most curious instances of contrast in human nature, if we base our opinion upon the thoughts which he has himself expressed in his collection of writings, known as the Mechaberoth. My purpose is neither a study of the literary work or activities in general of Dante nor of Immanuel, but in solemn admiration for the literary pyramid erected by the former, and fascinated by the marvellous dexterity with which the latter was able to employ the Hebrew tongue, I shall be glad if this humble tribute of mine will do something to demonstrate the close connection in style and thought between one of Immanuel's treatises and Dante's Inferno and Paradiso. I come before the public to-day not as an interpreter or literary critic and historian, but simply as a translator.
