Download or read book Felicia Hemans written by Mrs. Hemans and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first standard edition of the writings of Felicia Hemans (1793-1835), this volume marks a revival of interest in, and a new critical appreciation of, one of the most important literary figures of the early nineteenth century. A best-selling poet in England and America, Felicia Hemans was regarded as leading female poet in her day, celebrated as the epitome of national "feminine" values. However, this same narrow perception of her work eventually relegated Hemans to an obscurity lightened occasionally by parody and a sentimental enthusiasm for poems such as "The Landing of the Pilgrim Fathers" and "Casabianca." Only now is Hemans's work being rediscovered and reconsidered--for the complexity of its social and political vision, but also for its sounding of dissonances in nineteenth-century cultural ideals, and for its recasting of the traditional canon of male "Romantics." Offering readers a firsthand acquaintance with the remarkable range of Hemans's writing, this volume includes five major works in their entirety, along with a much-admired aggregate, Records of Woman. Hemans's letters, many published here for the first time, reflect her views of her contemporaries, her work, her negotiations with publishers, and her emerging celebrity, while reviews and letters from others--including Lord Byron, Walter Scott, and the Wordsworths--tell the story of Hemans's reception in her time. An introduction by editor Susan Wolfson puts these writings, as well as Hemans's life and work, into much-needed perspective for the contemporary reader.

Book Synopsis From Lambs to Lions by : Thomas Preston
Download or read book From Lambs to Lions written by Thomas Preston and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books discuss how nations can prevent the proliferation of biological and nuclear weapons, this unique and controversial volume begins with the premise that these weapons will certainly multiply despite our desperate desire to slow this process. How worried should we be and what should we do? Thomas Preston examines current trends in the proliferation of nuclear and biological weapons capabilities, know-how, and technologies for both state and nonstate actors and then projects these trends over the coming ten to fifteen years to assess how they might impact existing security relationships between states. Providing thorough discussion and analysis of a potentially nuclear North Korea and Iran, the current biotechnical revolution, and the future threat of attacks against the United States by terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda, Preston offers answers and some potentially surprising reassurances in this accessibly written and informative book. Download or read book Rangelands: A Resource Under Siege written by P. J. Joss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the proceedings of the Second International Rangelands Congress held in Adelaide, Australia in May 1984, and includes some 350 contributions drawn from 43 different countries. The Congress addressed the problem of the conflict between land-users and the degradation of this valuable resource. Some 40% of the Earth's land surface is and or alpine and therefore unsuitable for agricultural cultivation. Collectively, these lands are known as rangelands and in their natural state they constitute a habitat for grazing animals, both domestic and wild. Despite their low productivity, rangelands have been used for thousands of years as a source of food and fibre, but other uses such as mining, tourism, recreation and conservation are exerting increasing demands. The result is often conflict between land-users and degradation of the resource.
