Download or read book Hockey Doc written by Dr David S Mulder and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Division of the Montreal General Hospital was so close to the Forum that Montréal Canadiens players could put on skate guards and walk to the hospital’s emergency room. This was not a coincidence and established proximity as a priority. Dr. Douglas Kinnear supported twelve Stanley Cup winning Montréal Canadiens squads as team physician. Dr. David Mulder has been on the medical staff for over fifty years and for eight Stanley Cups. In Hockey Doc, these two legendary team physicians explore the dynamic doctor player relationship they came to know so well with a look at more than fifty years of medical care provided to the hockey club. Hockey Doc examines how the medical program for the Montréal Canadiens has evolved over its history due to its long-standing relationship with the MGH and the Molson family. The doctors breakdown major injuries with real-life examples that every team physician needs to be aware of and share career highlights. Featuring stories about Saku Koivu, Trent McCleary, Patrick Roy, Maurice Richard, Gump Worsley, Bobby Orr, Lou Lamoriello, and journalist Red Fisher – among countless others – Hockey Doc shares the inside jokes between doctor and player while providing a greater commentary on the evolution of sports medicine throughout two MGH doctors’ careers. For hockey fans of all ages and the Québec medical community, Hockey Doc shares the relationship between the injured professional athlete and the medical staff of a university medical centre and provides an inside look at the injuries and illnesses these doctors have faced over their storied careers.

Book Synopsis Benguela: Predicting a Large Marine Ecosystem by : Vere Shannon
Download or read book Benguela: Predicting a Large Marine Ecosystem written by Vere Shannon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book which examines much of what we know and also what we don’t know about the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem and its inherent variability. Building on recent work and exciting findings about the predictability of the Benguela and other coastal upwelling ecosystems, the book takes a look towards the future and highlights the difficulty of making predictions in such a complex and variable region. The book illustrates what scientists and managers from developed and developing countries can achieve by working together, and it lays a solid base upon which to build wise management and ensure sustainable use of the ecosystem. Essential reading and a valuable reference work on the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem Covers what we know about variability in the Benguela and its impacts Provides information on forecasting in the Benguela and offers insight in what is predictable and what is not Discusses key elements of a future integrated observing and forecasting system
Book Synopsis Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms by : Patricia M. Glibert
Download or read book Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms written by Patricia M. Glibert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) - blooms that cause fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, or cause human or ecological health impacts and harm to local economies - are occurring more often, in more places and lasting longer than in past decades. This expansion is primarily the result of human activities, through increased nutrient inputs and various aspects of climate change. The Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) programme promoted international collaboration to understand HAB population dynamics in various oceanographic regimes and to improve the prediction of HABs. This volume introduces readers to the overarching framework of the GEOHAB programme, factors contributing to the global expansion of harmful algal blooms, the complexities of HABs in different habitats, and the forward-looking issues to be tackled by the next generation of GEOHAB, GlobalHAB. The programme brought together an international team of contributing scientists and ecosystem managers, and its outcomes will greatly benefit the international research community.

Book Synopsis Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management by : Jason S. Link
Download or read book Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management written by Jason S. Link and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystem-based fishery management (EBFM) is rapidly becoming the default approach in global fisheries management. The clarity of what EBFM means is sharpening each year and there is now a real need to evaluate progress and assess the effectiveness and impacts. By examining a suite of over 90 indicators (including socioeconomic, governance, environmental forcing, major pressures, systems ecology, and fisheries criteria) for 9 major US fishery ecosystem jurisdictions, the authors systematically track the progress the country has made towards advancing EBFM and making it an operational reality. The assessment covers a wide range of data in both time (multiple decades) and space (from the tropics to the poles, representing over 10% of the world's ocean surface area). The authors view progress towards the implementation of EBFM as synonymous with improved management of living marine resources in general, and highlight the findings from a national perspective. Although US-centric, the lessons learned are directly applicable for all parts of the global ocean. Much work remains, but significant progress has already been made to better address many of the challenges facing the sustainable management of our living marine resources. This is an essential and accessible reference for all fisheries professionals who are currently practicing, or progressing towards, ecosystem-based fisheries management. It will also be of relevance and use to researchers, teachers, managers, and graduate students in marine ecology, fisheries biology, biological oceanography, global change biology, conservation biology, and marine resource management.
