Book excerpt: Eddie Kucera is born two months after the death of his immigrant father, who was killed in the Cherry, Illinois Mine Disaster in 1909. When his mother dies of pneumonia when Eddie was fourteen, his sisters plan to send him to an orphanage since they have no place for him in their lives. The year is 1924. He decides to run away from his family home in La Salle, Illinois in search of his only living uncle, Mike Kucera, who left Cherry in 1899 for the gold fields of Alaska when he was eighteen. In 1924, however, Mike is presently living in Oregon as a successful lumberman and has lost all contact with his family back in Illinois and knows nothing of Eddie's existence. The novel weaves the lives of these two young men into a tapestry of adventures that culminate with the birth of a child on Christmas Eve, 1929.

Book excerpt: Dirty Eddie’s War is the true account of the war-time experiences of Harry Andrew March, Jr., captured by way of diary entries addressed to his beloved wife, Elsa. Nicknamed “Dirty Eddie” by his comrades, he served as a member of four squadrons operating in the South Pacific, frequently under difficult and perilous conditions. Flying initially from aircraft carriers covering the landings at Guadalcanal in August 1942, he was one of the first pilots in the air over the island and then later based at Henderson Field with the “Cactus Air Force.” When he returned to combat at Bougainville and the “Hot Box” of Rabaul, the exploits of the new Corsair squadron “Fighting Seventeen” became legendary. Disregarding official regulations, March kept an unauthorized diary recording life onboard aircraft carriers, the brutal campaign and primitive living conditions on Guadalcanal, and the shattering loss of close friends and comrades. He captures the intensity of combat operations over Rabaul and the stresses of overwhelming enemy aerial opposition. Lee Cook presents Dirty Eddie’s story through genuine extracts from his diary supplemented with contextual narrative on the war effort. It reveals the personal account of a pilot’s innermost thoughts, both of the action he saw, the effects of his harrowing experiences, and his longing to be reunited with the love of his life back home.

Book excerpt: EVEN AT THE END, JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED. The Eleda system is dying. Cut off from the rest of humanity, the ancient machines that keep the colonies alive are breaking down, one by one. Bounty hunter Eddie Gould intends to write the tales of the system’s last days with a pen in one hand and a gun in the other. Alongside his partner, ex-revolutionary Dominique, Eddie hunts a fugitive through the flickering neon and crippled life support systems of a doomed space station. But a dark secret lies hidden in the space station’s twisting depths, a secret that will make Eddie question everything he thinks he knows about his past. And in this place, truth and justice are only found at the end of a gun. Hard, fast, and brutal, Stalker's Luck is a stylish retro-future tale of sin and desperation at the edge of space.

Book excerpt: Representing Vulnerabilities in Contemporary Literature includes a collection of essays exploring the ways in which recent literary representations of vulnerability may problematize its visibilization from an ethical and aesthetic perspective. Recent technological and scientific developments have accentuated human vulnerability in many and different ways at a cross-national, and even cross-species level. Disability, technological, and ecological vulnerabilities are new foci of interest that add up to gender, precarity and trauma, among others, as forms of vulnerability in this volume. The literary visualization of these vulnerabilities might help raise social awareness of one’s own vulnerabilities as well as those of others so as to bring about global solidarity based on affinity and affect. However, the literary representation of forms of vulnerability might also deepen stigmatization phenomena and trivialize the spectacularization of vulnerability by blunting readers’ affective response towards those products that strive to hold their attention and interest in an information-saturated, global entertainment market.

Book excerpt: The use of narrative methods has a long history in palliative care, pioneered by Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice movement, Narrative and Stories in Health Care provides a vibrant, multidisciplinary examination of work with narrative and stories in contemporary health and social care, with a focus on the care of people who are ill and dying. It animates the academic literature with provocative 'real-world' examples from international contributors, including palliative care service users and those working in the social and human sciences, medicine, theology, and the creative arts. Narrative and Stories in Health Care addresses and clarifies core issues: What is a narrative? What is a story? What are some of the main methods and models that can be used and for what purposes? What practical and ethical dilemmas can the methods entail in work with illness, death and dying? As well as highlighting the power of stories to create new possibilities, the book also acknowledges the conceptual, methodological and ethnical problems and challenges inherent in narrative work. As the hospice and palliative care movement evolves to meet the challenges of 21st century health care, this fascinating book highlights how narratives and stories can be attended to in ways that are productive, ethical, and caring.

Book excerpt: Every baseball player from little league to the big leagues knows it is illegal to steal signs, yet every major league team assigns someone to do just that. Baseball thrives on trickery and deception. But as our oldest major team sport, its larcenous legacy goes much deeper than the field of play. In LARCENY AND OLD LEATHER: THE MISCHIEVOUS LEGACY OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, Eldon Ham—sports lawyer, professor, and author—traces the game’s lesser-known, roguish past. His wry chapters, filled with anecdotes and statistics, expose both the hidden and the obvious cheating occurring throughout baseball’s history, from corked bats and spitballs to betting and media hyperbole. Here is a book for both seasoned baseball fans and neophytes who’d like to get a look at the game that evolved into an industry. Babe Ruth, Sammy Sosa, Pete Rose, and many other lesser known players make their appearance in this fascinating history, as Ham seeks not only to chronicle the legacy of deception inherent within the game, but also to explore why it is, and how it is, that this deception is exactly what makes baseball the most endearing of American games.

Book excerpt: I wrote this book aiming to wake up the conscience of the youth who had fallen prey in the jaws of a beast called "La vida loca". It is world of fatal illusion scandalized by Holywood and rap music, giving the impression that you can achieve anything you have dreamt of without having to face the consequences that "La vida loca" leaves behind. This is the story of my life, as I was 28 years old and believed I had the world on my feet. I never imagined waking up from this fatal illusion in the dark city, "La cárcel", where I spent the last 28 years of my life. If, after reading this story, you still want to continue the journey of "La vida loca", then you will surely end up in one of three destinations: The hospital, the prison and the cemetery... Where would you want to go? At least God gave me the opportunity to live to tell it, the majority have left with their stories onto eternity.

In the 1970s, a decade before bumper stickers and T-shirts bearing the phrase Eddie Would Go began popping up all over the Hawaiian islands and throughout the surfing world, Eddie Aikau was proving what it meant to be a “waterman.” As a fearless and gifted surfer, he rode the biggest waves in the world; as the first and most famous Waimea Bay lifeguard on the North Shore, he saved hundreds of lives from its treacherous waters; and as a proud Hawaiian, he sacrificed his life to save the crew aboard the voyaging canoe Hokule’a. From Stuart Holmes Coleman, Eddie Would Go is the “fascinating” story of Eddie Aikau’s life and legacy, a pipeline into the exhilarating world of surfing, and an important chronicle of the Hawaiian Renaissance and the emergence of modern Hawaii (San Francisco Chronicle). “Enlightening . . . an impressive history.” —Surfing Magazine “A meaningful biography of a surfing hero . . . extraordinary.” —San Diego Union-Tribune “Coleman, a surfer himself, does an admirable job of de-mystifying this remarkable man.” —St. Petersburg Times

In the words of her fianc, the medical doctor and narrator Larry Freeling, Maryanna McKenna is the smartest and sweetest woman he has ever met. She earns her doctorate in astronomy at 22, while Eddie Swinton, her best friend from childhood, learns from her father how to make a fortune in construction. Maryanna is about to marry the narrator when mosquito-borne encephalitis wrecks her intellect, reducing her to infancy. A woman who has mastered the most advanced mathematics for her doctoral dissertation is incapable of understanding even picture books for babies. Maryannas parents guard her with the same great love for the next several decades that they provided through her upbringing. Meanwhile, Eddie Swinton flourishes when his life becomes the American Dream. He marries the homecoming queen, raises three additional homecoming queens, and earns $100 million through construction in a life filled with beauty, wit, and charm. By juxtaposing such extremes of fate, Design of Darkness has few rivals for the way it turns existence back into a riddle that defies religious answers. Tell it as a love story! Tell it as a tragedy! Tell it as a triumph! Tell it as a mystery! are the last words of Maryannas father to the narrator. Larry pours his own hearts blood and memories of love into a tale as powerful and haunting as the lives of Maryanna and Eddie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extracts from book Once the ship had passed we settled down to wait for the next plan to emerge. Finally once we were east of the Shivering sands towers another ship came into view. This ship was coming from Sheerness docks and looked as if it would pass quite a distance from us. I found myself along with my father and our friend jumping up and down shouting "Help were here"! I knew this was futile as the ship was at least a mile away and the visibility was failing, and though I used to laugh when I saw this happen in films it was the only thing that we could do. Incredibly the crew on the ship did see us and changed course. As the ship circled us were heard a German accent calling to us. "Are you in da trouble", we looked at each other and the boat. Our first instinct was to shout back that we were all OK and that we always sailed around with a broken mast. But considering our circumstances we decided not to be clever and shouted out yes, and how grateful we were that the ship had come to our assistance. My father had contacted the firing range and told them our estimated time of arrival before leaving home, so it was no surprise that we were hours later than we anticipated. It was mid summer and we were all just lying about in shorts and T- shirts and there was barely a ripple on the water. We were all enjoying the trip when I noticed a flash coming from Shoeburyness. I turned and immediately informed my father, who began to say "don't be silly they know were coming", unfortunately he only got as far as "they know were .", when a thundering boom shattered a tranquil sail. This as immediately followed by a gust of wind that must has pushed the boat at four knots for a couple of seconds. On reaching the bank my father pulled the dingy out of the water and headed for the bridge. We could clearly see him walking around the by the control tower of the bridge for about five minutes, and I believe he was just about to give up and return to the boat when things got a little more exciting. A military Land rover sped up towards the bridge control tower and two Military Police officer's jumped out, ran over to my father and promptly shoved him into the back of the Land rover. They then drove of at speed in the same direction they had come from. My father did have a slight problem when putting the wheel on. The fitting to fix the wheel too was round while the hole in the centre of the wheel was square. To get over this obstacle he used a generous amount of plastic padding to fill the void between the wheel and the spindle. We were coming up toKingsFerryBridgeand I was at the helm and as per usual the bucket was lifted up the mast. As today there was always a wait while the demigod operator who lives in the bridge decides when we are worthy enough to lift his mighty bridge. Until the mast can clear the underside of the lifting bridge we would circle. As we approached for our second or third turn the wheel stopped responding and as I tried in vain to will the boat to turn the wheel came off in my hands. Like most of the Wharrem catamarans this boat though 34feet did not have a proper heads, and after finishing the Chinese food Mick decided he needed to use the heads. Like my father's boat prior to the rebuild the net on the front was seen as the gents. My father did mumble to anyone interested that in his opinion the net looked a bit rotten, but this warning fell on deaf ears. Mike staggered to the bow of the boat and dropped his jeans and pants and settled into the net. Joe who was not by any stretch of the imagination was standing quite close coiling a rope. Suddenly the net on which Mike was sitting gave up trying to support the weight of Mick. Mick vanished into the cloudy depths of the harbour, when he surfaced he was immediately having problem
