Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ride with the Troopers of the Arkansas State Police as they raid illegal gambling operations and take down drug dealers. Experience the helplessness as officers watch a fellow Trooper being ambushed. Mourn with the families when they receive word that a loved one has been killed in the line of duty. Feel the pain when you hear the sound of a twenty one-gun salute and cry as taps are blown at the funeral of a fallen comrade. You may wonder why anyone would choose to enter a profession that poses the danger associated with wearing a badge. Its pretty simple. Just ask any police officer who has rescued someone from a burning vehicle, or found a lost child and safely returned him or her to their parents. Then youll understand! Lieutenant Coffman has also written an autobiography entitled "Life" (its all about the Family) and a book of poetry entitled "Southern Charm" I believe that you will enjoy reading all of his books.

This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This elegantly written narrative traces Arkansas's evolution from a primarily rural society in the early 1900s to its expanding manufacturing economy and its growing prosperity and parity with the rest of the nation. Ben Johnson explores the influence of federal-state relations, beginning with the New Deal programs of President Franklin Roosevelt and continuing through the administrations of native son Bill Clinton. With particular sensitivity, he examines organized labor in the timber industry and in row crop agriculture; school desegregation, "white flight," and the private academy movement in the delta region; the growth of Wal-Mart and the poultry industry in the northwest section of the state; and the expansion of outdoor recreation and tourism as lakes were constructed and game populations rejuvenated. This book is particularly impressive for the breadth of its scope. Johnson offers detailed information on women, music and literature, organized religion, environmental trends, and other important cultural influences. Third in the popular Histories of Arkansas series, Arkansas in Modern America extends the narrative into the contemporary era with a format aimed at students and general readers. This important book will set the standard, for years to come, for analysis and interpretation of Arkansas's place in the twentieth century.

Its comprehensive listings of county, state, and federal officials make it a must-have for historians, journalists, genealogists, and other researchers. The 2008 edition also features essays by C. Fred Williams, Jay Barth, David Ware, Ann Early, and George Sabo III that provide insight into the state's history, politics, and Native American cultures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere was the transition from church-based aid to federal welfare state brought about by the Great Depression more dramatic than in the South. For a moment, the southern Protestant establishment turned to face the suffering that plantation capitalism pushed behind its image of planter's hatsand hoopskirts. When starving white farmers marched into an Arkansas town to demand food for their dying children and when priests turned away hungry widows and orphans because they were no needier than anyone else, southern clergy of both races spoke with one voice to say that they had done allthey could. It was time for a higher power to intervene. They looked to God, and then they looked to Roosevelt. When Roosevelt promised a new deal for the "forgotten man," Americans cheered, and when he took office, churches and private agencies gratefully turned much of the responsibility for welfare and social reform over to the state. Yet, argues historian Allison Collis Greene, Roosevelt's New Dealthreatened plantation capitalism even while bending to it. Black southern churches worked to secure benefits for their own communities while white churches divided over loyalties to Roosevelt and Jim Crow. Frustrated by their failure and fractured by divisions over the New Deal, leaders in the majorwhite Protestant denominations surrendered their moral authority in the South. Although the Protestant establishment retained a central role in American life for decades after the Depression, its slip from power made room for upstart Pentecostals and independent evangelicals, who emphasized personalrather than social salvation.
