Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Synopsis Failed States by : Musa Khan Jalalzai
Download or read book Failed States written by Musa Khan Jalalzai and published by Vij Books India Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2020-04-02 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Failed or failing states cause concern and spread chaos to their neighbors. They are an unquestionable and authentic source of terrorism, organized crime, drug trafficking, violence, disease, and economic breakdown. Afghanistan is an example of such a troubled state, which collapsed in 1992. The Afghan state remained shattered and failed due to the inattention of the international coalition. In modern intellectual forums, most of the failed-state discourses are centered on the lack of a state's capacity to carry out the basic services for which it is responsible, such as the rule of law, good governance, and effective border control against external threats. This book is a collection of articles on various issues leading to the Failed States written by eminent scholars and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at recent trends in the world economy from the perspective of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the good news is that in 2004 growth in the developing countries was rapid and more broad-based than it had been for many years. Strong per capita income growth continued in China and India, the two countries with the largest number of people living in absolute poverty. Latin America has seen a rebound from its deep economic crisis, and a return to faster growth, fuelled by export expansion. Africa again reached a growth rate of more than 4.5 per cent in 2004. Moreover, relatively strong growth in many African countries is envisaged in the short-term, owing to continuing strong demand for a number of their primary commodities. The bad news is that even growth rates of close to 5 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa are insufficient to attain the MDGs, and that the outlook for 2005, overshadowed by increasing global imbalances, is for slower growth in the developed countries with attendant effects on the developing countries. Since the beginning of the new millennium, the performance of the world economy has been shaped by the increasingly important role of China and India. Rapid growth in these two large economies has spilled over to many other developing countries and has established East and South Asia as a new growth pole in the world economy. Their ascent has been accompanied by new features of global interdependence, such as a brighter outlook for exporters of primary commodities, rising trade among developing countries, increasing exports of capital from the developing to the developed countries, but also intensified competition on the global markets for certain types of manufactures.
Book Synopsis Interpreting TRIPS by : Hiroko Yamane
Download or read book Interpreting TRIPS written by Hiroko Yamane and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protection of intellectual property rights (IPRs) has become a global issue. The Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) Agreement outlines the minimum standards for IPR protection for WTO members and offers a global regime for IPR protection. However, the benefits of TRIPS are more questionable in poorer countries where national infrastructure for research and development (R&D) and social protection are inadequate, whereas the cost of innovation is high. Today, after more than a decade of intense debate over global IPR protection, the problems remain acute, although there is also evidence of progress and cooperation. This book examines various views of the role of IPRs as incentives for innovation against the backdrop of development and the transfer of technology between globalised, knowledge-based, high technology economies. The book retraces the origins, content and interpretations of the TRIPS Agreement, including its interpretations by WTO dispute settlement organs. It also analyses sources of controversy over IPRs, examining pharmaceutical industry strategies of emerging countries with different IPR policies. The continuing international debate over IPRs is examined in depth, as are TRIPS rules and the controversy about implementing the 'flexibilities' of the Agreement in the light of national policy objectives. The author concludes that for governments in developing countries, as well as for their business and scientific communities, a great deal depends on domestic policy objectives and their implementation. IPR protection should be supporting domestic policies for innovation and investment. This, in turn requires a re-casting of the debate about TRIPS, to place cooperation in global and efficient R&D at the heart of concerns over IPR protection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom in the World, the Freedom House flagship survey whose findings have been published annually since 1972, is the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties. The survey ratings and narrative reports on 192 countries and a group of select territories are used by policy makers, the media, international corporations, and civic activists and human rights defenders to monitor trends in democracy and track improvements and setbacks in freedom worldwide. Press accounts of the survey findings appear in hundreds of influential newspapers in the United States and abroad and form the basis of numerous radio and television reports. The Freedom in the World political rights and civil liberties ratings are determined through a multi-layered process of research and evaluation by a team of regional analysts and eminent scholars. The analysts used a broad range of sources of information, including foreign and domestic news reports, academic studies, nongovernmental organizations, think tanks, individual professional contacts, and visits to the region, in conducting their research. The methodology of the survey is derived in large measure from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and these standards are applied to all countries and territories, irrespective of geographical location, ethnic or religious composition, or level of economic development. Freedom House is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that supports democratic change, monitors freedom, and advocates for democracy and human rights.

Book Synopsis The Intelligence War in Latin America, 1914-1922 by : Jamie Bisher
Download or read book The Intelligence War in Latin America, 1914-1922 written by Jamie Bisher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War I did not bypass Latin America. Within days of the war's outbreak, European belligerents mobilized intelligence assets and secret diplomacy to compete for Latin America's allegiances and resources. This intelligence war entangled all of the American republics and even Japan. Dreary consular offices from the Rio Grande to the Straits of Magellan were abruptly thrust into covert activities, trafficking in fugitives, running contraband and conducting sabotage. Revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements, big oil, international banks and businesses were also drawn in. Drawing on long-classified U.S. intelligence documents, this narrative of the Latin American intelligence war reveals the complexity and chaos behind the placid veneer of wartime Pan-America. The author connects the dots between Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Guatemala City, Lima, Havana, Santiago, Rio de Janeiro, Berlin, London, Washington, Tokyo and dozens of safe houses, front companies, consulates, legations and headquarters in between. Scores of unrecognized veterans of the intelligence war are revealed.

Download or read book Doing Business 2019 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 1734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteenth in a series of annual reports comparing business regulation in 190 economies, Doing Business 2019 measures aspects of regulation affecting 10 areas of everyday business activity: • Starting a business • Dealing with construction permits • Getting electricity • Registering property • Getting credit • Protecting minority investors • Paying taxes • Trading across borders • Enforcing contracts • Resolving insolvency These areas are included in the distance to frontier score and ease of doing business ranking. Doing Business also measures features of labor market regulation, which is not included in these two measures. This edition also presents the findings of the pilot indicator entitled 'Contracting with the Government,' which aims at benchmarking the efficiency, quality and transparency of public procurement systems worldwide. The report updates all indicators as of May 1, 2018, ranks economies on their overall 'ease of doing business', and analyzes reforms to business regulation -- identifying which economies are strengthening their business environment the most. Doing Business illustrates how reforms in business regulations are being used to analyze economic outcomes for domestic entrepreneurs and for the wider economy. It is a flagship product produced in partnership by the World Bank Group that garners worldwide attention on regulatory barriers to entrepreneurship. Almost 140 economies have used the Doing Business indicators to shape reform agendas and monitor improvements on the ground.
