Book excerpt: Fish in U.S. waters from Cape Hatteras to the Canadian border have moved away from their traditional, long-time habitats over the past four decades because of fundamental changes in the regional ecosystem. During the past 40 years, the ecosystem has experienced extensive fishing by domestic and foreign fleets, changes in ocean water temperatures due to climate change, and pressures from increasing human populations along the coast. This report highlights the need to understand natural and human-related changes in this region and to develop effective management and mitigation strategies. These changes have been linked to changes in the distribution and abundance of fish species in the region and their major sources of food. Illus.

Book excerpt: IN MEMORIAL: This Research Topic is dedicated to our co-editor Dr. Tiffany Moisan, a well-regarded ocean color remote sensing scientist, who unexpectedly passed away during its preparation. Dr. Moisan was a dear friend, and upbeat and enthusiastic colleague and a scientist committed to the use of remote sensing to improve our understanding of marine microbiology and phytoplankton ecology. She was a strong supporter of the development of remote sensing capabilities and applications for coastal and inland waters, and we know that she would have wanted this Research Topic to provide her colleagues an opportunity to share and promote their work in this area. A voice in our community is now quiet. Let the chorus of our shared song continue with her memory. Dr. Tiffany Moisan is survived by her loving family, including her husband, Dr. John Moisan and her two daughters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change (including climate change, biodiversity loss, changes in hydrological and biogeochemical cycles, and intensive exploitation of natural resources) is having significant impacts on the world's oceans. This book advances knowledge of the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems, and their past, present, and future responses to physical and anthropogenic forcing. It illustrates how climate and humans impact marine ecosystems, providing a comprehensive review of the physical and ecological processes that structure marine ecosystems as well as the observation, experimentation, and modelling approaches required for their study. Recognizing the interactive roles played by humans in using marine resources and in responding to global changes in marine systems, the book includes chapters on the human dimensions of marine ecosystem changes and on effective management approaches in this era of rapid change. A final section reviews the state of the art in predicting the responses of marine ecosystems to future global change scenarios with the intention of informing both future research agendas and marine management policy. Marine Ecosystems and Global Change provides a detailed synthesis of the work conducted under the auspices of the Global Ocean Ecosystems Dynamics (GLOBEC) programme. This research spans two decades, and represents the largest, multi-disciplinary, international effort focused on understanding the impacts of external forcing on the structure and dynamics of global marine ecosystems.

Book excerpt: The Arctic is now experiencing some of the most rapid and severe climate change on earth. Over the next 100 years, climate change is expected to accelerate, contributing to major physical, ecological, social, and economic changes, many of which have already begun. Changes in arctic climate will also affect the rest of the world through increased global warming and rising sea levels. Arctic Climate Impact Assessment was prepared by an international team of over 300 scientists, experts, and knowledgeable members of indigenous communities. The report has been thoroughly researched, is fully referenced, and provides the first comprehensive evaluation of arctic climate change, changes in ultraviolet radiation and their impacts for the region and for the world. It is illustrated in full color throughout. The results provided the scientific foundations for the ACIA synthesis report - Impacts of a Warming Arctic - published by Cambridge University Press in 2004.

Book excerpt: Showing how big-picture patterns can help overcome the failures of conventional management, this book is ideal for students, researchers and professionals involved with marine fisheries. It explores not only the current practice of the 'ecosystem approach' to fisheries management but also its critical importance to even larger perspectives. The first section gives a valuable overview of how more and more of the complexity of real-world systems is being recognized and involved in the management of fisheries around the world. The second section then demonstrates how important aspects of real-world systems, involving population dynamics, evolution and behavior, remain to be taken into account completely. This section also shows how we must change the way we think about our involvement in, and the complexity of, marine ecosystems. The final chapters consider how, with the use of carefully chosen macroecological patterns, we can take important steps towards more holistic management of marine fisheries.

Book excerpt: This is one of a series of reports summarizing the year's activities of the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council and making recommendations on Atlantic groundfish conservation for the 1997 fishing season. The first chapter summarizes the Council's consultation process in developing those recommendations, the principles on which its conservation strategy is based, and general Council activities. Chapter two discusses conservation issues that fall outside stock-by-stock recommendations, such as capacity management, harvesting plans, by-catch, attitudinal changes, and predatory-prey relationships. Chapter three outlines the Council's strategy and criteria for re-opening closed fisheries and maintaining a sustainable fishery. Chapter four, the largest, details conservation recommendations for individual stocks of such species as cod, haddock, plaice, flounder, and halibut. Appendices include summaries of consultations on groundfish, gear technology, fishery re-opening, and Georges Bank fisheries.

The Gulf of Mexico is an open and dynamic marine ecosystem rich in natural resources but heavily impacted by human activities, including agricultural, industrial, commercial and coastal development. The Gulf of Mexico has been continuously exposed to petroleum hydrocarbons for millions of years from natural oil and gas seeps on the sea floor, and more recently from oil drilling and production activities located in the water near and far from shore. Major accidental oil spills in the Gulf are infrequent; two of the most significant include the Ixtoc I blowout in the Bay of Campeche in 1979 and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in 2010. Unfortunately, baseline assessments of the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before these spills either were not available, or the data had not been systematically compiled in a way that would help scientists assess the potential short-term and long-term effects of such events. This 2-volume series compiles and summarizes thousands of data sets showing the status of habitats and biota in the Gulf of Mexico before the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Volume 2 covers historical data on commercial and recreational fisheries, with an analysis of marketing trends and drivers; ecology, populations and risks to birds, sea turtles and marine mammals in the Gulf; and diseases and mortalities of fish and other animals that inhabit the Gulf of Mexico.
