Book Synopsis Wage Setting, Social Pacts and the Euro by : Anke Hassel
Download or read book Wage Setting, Social Pacts and the Euro written by Anke Hassel and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicians, economists, and social theorists tend to agree that globalization and neo-liberal economic policy have contributed to the decline of the social compacts underlying traditional European welfare states. Recently, however, social pacts have demonstrated an impressive resurgence, as governments across Europe facing necessary economic policy adjustments have chosen to view trade unions as vital negotiating partners rather than adversaries. Wage Setting, Social Pacts, and the Euro offers a theoretical understanding of the forces that have led to this new understanding, and of the challenges that increasing monetary integration will continue to pose.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Public Finance by : Marc Buggeln
Download or read book The Political Economy of Public Finance written by Marc Buggeln and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the major trends in public finance in developed capitalist countries since the oil crisis of 1973. That year's oil shock quickly became an economic crisis, putting an end to a period of very high growth rates and an era of easy finance. Tax protests and growing welfare costs often led to rising debt levels. The change to floating exchange rates put more power in the hand of markets, which corresponded with a growing influence of neo-liberal thinking. These developments placed state finances under considerable pressure, and leading scholars here examine how the wealthiest OECD countries responded to these challenges and the consequences for the distribution of wealth between the rich and the poor. As the case studies here make clear, there was no simple 'race to the bottom' in taxation and welfare spending: different countries opted for different solutions that reflected their political and economic structures.

Book Synopsis Size Distribution of Income by : Shail Jain
Download or read book Size Distribution of Income written by Shail Jain and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of income distribution surveys are scattered throughout a variety of sources and rarely present their data in a comparable manner. This report represents a combing of this literature and a setting of the data on 81 countries into a format that allows direct comparisons among the results of all surverys. A uniform group of inequality indexes accompanies each data set; an introductory essay discusses measurement concepts and guidelines; an index of coverage permits easy comparison of the type and date of each survey for a given country; and a comprehensive bibliography cites all of the data sources. This unique compilation is part of an ongoing effort by the Development Research Center of the World Bank to provide a factual and analytical research base in the important areas of poverty and income distribution.

Book Synopsis Occupational Prestige in Comparative Perspective by : Donald J. Treiman
Download or read book Occupational Prestige in Comparative Perspective written by Donald J. Treiman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occupational Prestige in Comparative Perspective provides information pertinent to the study of the nature of inequality in human society. This book discusses that stratification is inevitable in complex societies as they are characterized by a highly developed division of labor into distinct occupational roles. Organized into five parts encompassing 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the nature of occupational prestige systems that is rooted in power relations. This text then examines the extent of intrasocial variation in occupational prestige evaluations. Other chapters consider the contrast between the consensus that characterizes occupational prestige evaluations and the lack of consensus that characterizes the evaluation of other social categories. This book discusses as well the basic pattern of occupational evaluations and the worldwide uniformity in occupational evaluations. The final chapter deals with the development of the occupational scale and discusses it potential uses. This book is a valuable resource for sociologists.
