Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China is changing the strategic landscape globally and regionally. How states respond to potential threats posed by this new power arrangement will be crucial to international relations for the coming decades. This book builds on existing realist and rationalist concepts of balancing, bandwagoning, commitment problems, and asymmetric information to craft explanations about how states respond when faced with potential threats. Specifically, the book explores the role different types of uncertainty play in potential balancing situations. Particular focus is given to the nature of the rising state’s actions, the balance of forces, and the value of delay. These concepts are analysed and illustrated through a series of case studies on Europe in the 1930s as well as the present-day Southeast Asia, looking at great powers such as Britain and France, but also a wide range of smaller powers including Poland, Yugoslavia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. This three-volume set examines the relationship between government and civil society in their efforts to define and pursue security. Including the results of an extensive research program, each volume is organized around one of the three principal themes - environment, people and globalization, supplying compelling evidence of the tension between economic change and human well-being. Challenging the conventional wisdom about the beneficial results of economically induced change, this first volume suggests that too often the mismanagement of development jeopardizes the security of individuals, families, communities, and possibly the state, by harming the very environment which is required to sustain both people and their economic existence. Bringing together an international group of scholars from a variety of disciplines, this volume is particularly relevant for academic and general research communities in the areas of social, economic, political and security matters of Southeast Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Updated papers and discussion summary of a RAND conference held in January 1979 to assess the major political, economic, and military trends likely to shape Asian regional security in the 1980s. Twelve chapters explore the impact of the Sino-Soviet rivalry on the region and the implication of indigenous developments associated with the dramatic economic growth and social transformation of East Asia. Specific issues include extension of the Sino-Soviet conflict to Indo-China; the Soviet military buildup in Asia; America's military presence and role in maintaining a force balance; Japan's new defense mood and future policy directions; the coming "crossover" in power relationships between North and South Korea; continuing rapid economic growth and its political consequences; the regional impact of China's economic modernization program; problems of arms transfers and nuclear proliferation; and the security implications of Asia's growing technological and industrial sophistication. An overview analysis suggests ten choices for a U.S. allied security strategy for the region which will determine the pattern of Asian security relationships in the coming decade. 305 pp. (JD)."--Rand abstracts.

Download or read book Securing Southeast Asia written by Mark Beeson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uniquely applies the security reform agenda to Southeast Asia. It investigates recent developments in civil-military relations in the region, looking in particular at the impact and utility of the agenda on the region and assessing whether it is likely to help make the region more stable and less prone to military interventions. It provides an historical overview of the region’s civil-military relations and goes on to explore the dynamics of civil-military relations within the context of the security sector reform framework, focusing on the experiences of four of the region’s militaries: Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia. It argues that although regional militaries have not necessarily followed a ‘Western’ model, significant developments have occurred that are broadly in keeping with the security sector reform agenda, and which suggests that the prospects for stable civil-military relations are brighter than some sceptics believe.

Book Synopsis A U.S. Foreign Policy for Asia by : Ramon Hawley Myers
Download or read book A U.S. Foreign Policy for Asia written by Ramon Hawley Myers and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current U.S. foreign policy in Asia. During the past three years, U.S. policies of giving top priority to Western Europe, relying on China to counterbalance the Soviet Union in Asia, rearming Japan and transferring modern weapons and economic aid to such states as Pakistan have not effectively dealt with threats of conflict. The foreign policy proposed focuses on the economic and political value of those key noncommunist nations encircling eastern and southern Asia and also India. The contributors agree that America needs a foreign policy that can counter Soviet expansionism and make recommendations toward this goal.
