Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the major health, water, environmental, tourism and other welfare impacts associated with poor sanitation in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. By examining the economic impacts of poor sanitation, and the potential gains from improved sanitation, this study provides important evidence to support further investments in sanitation. The goal of this report is to show decision makers at the country and regional levels how the negative impacts of poor sanitation can be mitigated by investing in improved sanitation. The study is based on evidence from other investigations, surveys and databases. The impact measurement reported in the study focuses mainly on a narrow definition of sanitation - human excreta management and related hygiene practices. The measurement of water resource impact included release of gray water to water bodies, and the measurement of environmental impact included poor solid waste management.

(ii) Are women's time savings resulting from increased access to infrastructure used for productive work that also reduces consumption poverty? (iii) Can infrastructure projects more effectively reduce both time and consumption poverty for women?

Sound water management and access to reliable service delivery remain vital to inclusive economic growth and social well-being, especially after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This edition includes two new sections highlighting the importance of finance and governance to water security as well as case studies demonstrating how the AWDO has influenced policy development in four countries.

Book Synopsis Economic Costs of Inadequate Water and Sanitation by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Economic Costs of Inadequate Water and Sanitation written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inadequate water supply and sanitation situation in South Tarawa has contributed to high rates of water-borne diseases and environmental degradation in the country's main urban center. There has been limited capital investment in water supply and sanitation infrastructure and ongoing operations and maintenance in South Tarawa, in part, as a result of low cost recovery in service delivery. To enable more informed policy responses to address the current situation, this study seeks to estimate the total economic costs associated with inadequate water and sanitation services in South Tarawa.
Book Synopsis Village Water Supply by : Robert J. Saunders
Download or read book Village Water Supply written by Robert J. Saunders and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1976 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great majority of persons in rural areas of the developing world do not have access to a safe and convenient source of water, and where this is available, acceptable sewage disposal facilities are normally lacking. The authors examine a wide range of factors - physical, social, and economic - that are involved in improving the adequacy of water supply and sanitation in the coming years. Among the principal topics covered in detail are: (a) the character and extent of the problems connected with water supply and sanitation; (b) the goal of improved health, with specific reference to the relation between water supply and water-borne disease, on the one hand, and social and economic activity, on the other; (c) the effects of improved water supply and sanitation on productivity, incomes, rural-to-urban migration, and overall development; (d) problems of, and strategies for, program planning and administration; (e) the special problems of operation and maintenance; and (f) the importance of recovering program costs from beneficiaries. The book also contains a summary of findings of the study and lists a number of recommendations for improving rural water supply and sanitation.
Book Synopsis Water Security in Asia by : Mukand Babel
Download or read book Water Security in Asia written by Mukand Babel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-05-22 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the current water-security situation in Asia. The thematic areas of the book discuss the United Nation’s sustainable development goals with a particular focus on Goal 6 (“Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation”) and Goal 13 (“Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”). Asia has been facing a number of water-related challenges for decades due to multiple factors such as increasing population, socio-economic development, urbanization and migration, and climate change now poses an additional threat. While significant efforts have been made by governments in Asia, much more work is needed to make Asian societies water-secure. Given its multi-disciplinary approach, the book is a valuable resource for researchers involved in the further development of water-security concepts, approaches, and methodologies. In addition, it helps policymakers, planners, and practitioners to formulate sustainable water- security enhancement strategies grounded in sound scientific evidence to protect human well-being.
