Book excerpt: This document updates and expands the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) User Benefit Analysis for Highways, also known as the Red Book. This AASHTO publication helps state and local transportation planning authorities evaluate the economic benefits of highway improvements. This update incorporates improvements in user-benefit calculation methods and, for the first time, provides guidance for evaluating important non-user impacts of highways. Previous editions of the Red Book provided guidance regarding user benefit measurement only. This update provides a framework for project evaluations that accurately account for both user and non-user benefits. The manual and accompanying CD-ROM provide a valuable resource for people who analyze the benefits and costs of highway projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HIGHWAY ENGINEERING Understand a foundational area of civil engineering with this up-to-date textbook Highway construction is a complex discipline within civil engineering, with the potential to transform national economies and transportation infrastructures. With car infrastructure coming under both increasing demand and increasing scrutiny for its environmental impact, the challenges and complexities of highway engineering have never been a more vital subject. The future of sustainable transportation depends on an engineering profession with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of highway design and construction. Highway Engineering provides a comprehensive overview of these fundamentals, preparing civil engineers and engineering students to analyze, design, and build highways. Situating its subject in the context of a broader political economy, social and ecological reality, and more, it proceeds in a logical sequence from planning to design to construction to maintenance. The result is a fully up-to-date introduction to this subject at the heart of transport engineering. Readers of the fourth edition of Highway Engineering will also find: Strong integration of material from the UK Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, incorporating recent significant changes in the design of highway pavements Detailed examples and case studies to cultivate deepened understanding Increased attention to the growing importance of non-car-based modes of highway transportation—walking, cycling and public transport. Highway Engineering is essential for engineering students studying civil engineering or transport engineering, as well as for professional civil engineers looking for a reference work.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A representative schedule is presented of vehicular operating costs. The differences between which are caused only by changes in vehiclular gross weight, and/or changes in types of trailer combinations. Such representative vehicular cost data later can be related to representative costs for highway facilities with different load-carrying capabilities. The report describes how the different cost factors were adjusted for differences in prices paid for fuel, wages, fringe benefits, depreciation and interest charges, and new vehicles. The data are presented in an extensive series of charts showing the variations in vehicle-mile costs by loaded gross weight for all the 23,384 trailer combinations, all the gasoline engine powered trailer combinations and all the diesel powered combinations using either gasoline or diesel engines. Other charts and tables show how unit costs are affected by body type, type of terrain, average daily travel mileage, average load speed, and other operating variables.

Book excerpt: "Policy-makers often call for expanding public spending on infrastructure, which includes a broad range of investments from roads and bridges to digital networks that will expand access to high-speed broadband. Some point to near-term macro-economic benefits and job creation, others focus on long-term effects on productivity and economic growth. This volume explores the links between infrastructure spending and economic outcomes, as well as key economic issues in the funding and management of infrastructure projects. It draws together research studies that describe the short-run stimulus effects of infrastructure spending, develop new estimates of the stock of U.S. infrastructure capital, and explore the incentive aspects of public-private partnerships (PPPs). A salient issue is the treatment of risk in evaluating publicly-funded infrastructure projects and in connection with PPPs. The goal of the volume is to provide a reference for researchers seeking to expand research on infrastructure issues, and for policy-makers tasked with determining the appropriate level of infrastructure spending"--
