Book excerpt: This transdisciplinary study scientifically reports the way the established contemporary dance sector in Europe operates from a micro-perspective. It provides a dance scholarly and sociological interpretation of its mechanisms by coupling qualitative data (interview material, observations, logbooks, and dance performances) to theoretical insights. The book uncovers the sometimes contradicting mechanisms related to the precarious project-oriented labor and art market that determine the working and living conditions of contemporary dance artists in Europe’s dance capitals Brussels and Berlin. In addition, it examines how these working and living conditions affect the work process and outcome. From a sociological perspective, the book engages with the relevant contemporary social issue of precarity and this within the much-at-risk professional group of contemporary dance artists. In this regard, the research brings novelty within the subject area, particularly by employing a unique methodological approach. Although the research is initially set up in a specific geographical context and within a specific research population, the book offers insights into issues that affect our neoliberal society at large. The research findings show potential to make a relevant contribution with regards to precarity within dance studies and performance studies, but also labor studies and cultural sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of electronic dance music (EDM) and club culture. To do so, it interlinks a broad range of disciplines, revealing their (at times vastly) differing standpoints on the same subject. Scholars from such diverse fields as cultural studies, economics, linguistics, media studies, musicology, philosophy, and sociology share their perspectives. In addition, the book features articles by practitioners who have been active on the EDM scene for many years and discuss issues like gender and diversity problems in general, and the effects of gentrification on club culture in Berlin. Although the book’s main focus is on Berlin, one of the key centers of EDM and club culture, its findings can also be applied to other hotspots. Though primarily intended for researchers and students, the book will benefit all readers interested in obtaining an interdisciplinary overview of research on electronic dance music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1978 in China, foreign direct investment has served as a driver of change that has brought the country into the modern economic world. Mao Zedong had shut out the foreign devilsEuropeans, Japanese, Americans and other outsiders. He created chaos in an economy that was long on suffering but short on foreign currency, technology and capital. In this detailed account, Dick K. Nanto explores how foreign companies came in tofill the gaps in Chinas economy and helped it to become a manufacturing marvel. Hefocuses on topics such as how: Industrialization has created a socialist economy with Chinese characteristics thatare reflected in industrial policy, governmental institutions, state-owned enterprises, the push to climb the high-technology ladder, indigenous innovation, and the drive to create more national champion companies. Chinese are investing abroad, entering the home turf of multinational corporationsand raising issues related to national security. Foreign enterprises are now being squeezed as Beijing seeks to replace them withcompanies of its own. Businesspeople, entrepreneurs, international business students, politicians, and anyoneinterested in how things get done in China will find engaging, informative, andcomprehensive information in Chinas Dance with the Foreign Devils.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating exploration of which countries offer promising investment opportunities for Americans now and in the years to come Most emerging markets investment guides focus on financial metrics, but fail to provide the reader with new and relevant insights into the history of the countries, the views of the people on the street, and the financial shenanigans that go on behind the scenes, that make for truly informed investing. As a result, despite the growing interest in investing in these markets, investors are often missing key opportunities because they either have incorrect information about a country where they might invest, or simply don't know what questions they should be asking. Where In the World Should I Invest: An Insider's Guide to Making Money Around the Globe is here to help. Drawing on author Karim Rahemtulla's personal experiences traveling the globe and exploring the capitals where business is transacted, the book outlines the perils, pitfalls, and rewards of investing in "low float" markets. The essential resource for taking the right steps in exploring investment opportunities in foreign and emerging markets Expert advice from an author with 20 years experience covering emerging markets Commentary on the expectations of foreign investors, the fears of investing abroad, how to set up legal offshore accounts, and much more Packed with unique insights into twenty countries and regions around the globe based on the author's extensive interviews and travels, Where In the World Should I Invest is a must-read for anyone thinking of expanding their investment portfolio overseas.
