Download or read book Ecological responses to environment stresses written by Jelte Rozema and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 1987, the Faculty Biology of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam commemorated the fact that Prof. Dr. Wilfried Hans Otto Ernst had been active as a scientist for 25 years. This period of 25 years of scientific research started at the Institut flir Angewandte Botanik (Institute of Applied Botany) of the University of Munster, FRG. In 1965 he completed his Ph. D. thesis, entitled "Untersuchungen der Schwermetallpflanzengesellschaften Mitteleuropas unter Einschluss der Alpen. " He was appointed full Professor at the Department of Ecology of the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam in 1973. On the occasion of his 25th anniversary as a scientist, a promise was made, though in covert terms, which we could not redeem at that time. The promise held to offer Prof. Ernst a book, in which his former and present staffmembers, Ph. D. students and colle ages should write a review about their specialism concerning a central theme. Now, at the beginning of 1990 we consider the chapters of "Ecological Responses to Environmental Stresses" to be completed. The book reflects the wide range of research approaches that has been initiated and organized by Wilfried Ernst. The editors hope to have attained the primary aim of the production of the book of friends, that is to gather relevant papers of staff-members and colleagues of Wilfried Ernst. The title of the book "Ecological Responses to Environmental Stresses" covers the majority of the chapters included.
Book Synopsis Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes by : Samantha Capon
Download or read book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes written by Samantha Capon and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation communities in Australia's riverine landscapes are ecologically, economically and culturally significant. They are also among the most threatened ecosystems on the continent and have been dramatically altered as a result of human activities and climate change. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes brings together, for the first time, the results of the substantial amount of research that has been conducted over the last few decades into the biology, ecology and management of these important plant communities in Australia. The book is divided into four sections. The first section provides context with respect to the spatial and temporal dimensions of riverine landscapes in Australia. The second section examines key groups of riverine plants, while the third section provides an overview of riverine vegetation in five major regions of Australia, including patterns, significant threats and management. The final section explores critical issues associated with the conservation and management of riverine plants and vegetation, including water management, salinity, fire and restoration. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes highlights the incredible diversity and dynamic nature of riverine vegetation across Australia, and will be an excellent reference for researchers, academics and environmental consultants.

Book Synopsis Lake Biwa: Interactions between Nature and People by : Hiroya Kawanabe
Download or read book Lake Biwa: Interactions between Nature and People written by Hiroya Kawanabe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although, the first edition had a similar focus, more than five years have passed since its publication and the biological and social circumstances of the lake have drastically changed due to, for example, the further expansion of alien species, the decrease of indigenous species, the progress of integrated watershed management by the Union of the Kansai Government which was established in 2010, the legislation of the Conservation and Restoration Act of Lake Biwa in 2015 and more. The new edition will therefore feature updated and new information on the above and more topics as well as updated and revised data based on the latest research. Inventories of respective taxa, especially those of small animals, are also revised based on the latest studies. Furthermore, this volume covers the characteristics of the biota of this ancient lake, but at the same time, it will also approach it as a ‘culture ancient lake’. Other topics also include water pollution, lakeshore development, the effects of global warming in the past and present, the influence of people, and countermeasures by local and national governments. Moreover, the volume also provides a comprehensive view on the future of Lake Biwa and that of its residents. Miraculously enough, this ancient lake has kept its water quality clear even until today despite the fact of more than 1.4 million people living on its shores. Finally, the book also gives indispensable information to those engaged in improving and conserving water regimes of lakes and other water bodies all over the world and to those interested in the culture and history of Japan. Lake Biwa is not only one of the rarest ancient lakes of the world, but the people’s involvement with the lake also goes back a long way. This is shown in the diverse culture developed in this area and in the various archaeological finds that date back as early as the Jomon Period, nearly 10.000 years ago. Today Lake Biwa fulfills an important role as a water resource by providing domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural water for over 14 million residents living around the Lake Biwa-Yodo River drainage basin. This updated volume focuses on the geological and biological features of the lake as well as on the long-term interactions between the people and the lake.
Book Synopsis Heavy Metal Stress in Plants by : Dharmendra K. Gupta
Download or read book Heavy Metal Stress in Plants written by Dharmendra K. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-04 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants possess a range of potential cellular mechanisms that may be involved in the detoxification of heavy metals and thus tolerance to metal stress. Metal toxicity causes multiple direct and indirect effects in plants that concern practically all physiological functions. The main purpose of this book is to present comprehensive and concise information on recent advances in the field of metal transport and how genetic diversity affects heavy metal transport in plants. Other key futures of the book are related to metal toxicity and detoxification mechanisms, biochemical tools for HM remediation processes, molecular mechanisms for HM detoxification, how metallomics and metalloproteomics are affected by heavy metal stress in plants, and the role of ROS metabolism in the alleviation of heavy metals. Some chapters also focus on recent developments in the field of phytoremediation. Overall the book presents in-depth information and the most essential advances in the field of heavy metal toxicity in plants in recent years.
