Book Synopsis Economic and Ecological Significance of Arthropods in Diversified Ecosystems by : Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy
Download or read book Economic and Ecological Significance of Arthropods in Diversified Ecosystems written by Akshay Kumar Chakravarthy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthropods are invertebrates that constitute over 90% of the animal kingdom, and their bio-ecology is closely linked with global functioning and survival. Arthropods play an important role in maintaining the health of ecosystems, provide livelihoods and nutrition to human communities, and are important indicators of environmental change. Yet the population trends of several arthropods species show them to be in decline. Arthropods constitute a dominant group with 1.2 million species influencing earth’s biodiversity. Among arthropods, insects are predominant, with ca. 1 million species and having evolved some 350 million years ago. Arthropods are closely associated with living and non-living entities alike, making the ecosystem services they provide crucially important. In order to be effective, plans for the conservation of arthropods and ecosystems should include a mixture of strategies like protecting key habitats and genomic studies to formulate relevant policies for in situ and ex situ conservation. This two-volume book focuses on capturing the essentials of arthropod inventories, biology, and conservation. Further, it seeks to identify the mechanisms by which arthropod populations can be sustained in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and by means of which certain problematic species be managed without producing harmful environmental side-effects. This edited compilation includes chapters contributed by over 80 biologists on a wide range of topics embracing the diversity, distribution, utility and conservation of arthropods and select groups of insect taxa. More importantly, it describes in detail the mechanisms of sustaining arthropod ecosystems, services and populations. It addresses the contribution of modern biological tools such as molecular and genetic techniques regulating gene expression, as well as conventional, indigenous practices in arthropod conservation. The contributors reiterate the importance of documenting and understanding the biology of arthropods from a holistic perspective before addressing conservation issues at large. This book offers a valuable resource for all zoologists, entomologists, ecologists, conservation biologists, policy makers, teachers and students interested in the conservation of biological resources.
Book Synopsis Zoogeography of Arachnida by : Petar Beron
Download or read book Zoogeography of Arachnida written by Petar Beron and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume merges all geographical and paleogeographical data on all groups of the arachnofauna. The book features topics such as the ecological factors, climate and other barriers that influence the distribution of arachnida. It also elaborates on the characteristics of the distribution such as arachnida at high altitude (e.g. Himalaya), in caves, in polar regions and highlights differences between the arachnofauna of e.g. Mediterranean regions vs Central Europe, West African vs Indomalayan and more. Furthermore, amongst other topics the volume also includes chapters on the systems of arachnida, fossil orders, dispersal and dispersion, endemics and relicts, regional arachnogeography, cave and high altitude arachnida.
Book Synopsis Mites (Acari) for Pest Control by : Uri Gerson
Download or read book Mites (Acari) for Pest Control written by Uri Gerson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mites (Acari) for Pest Control is an extremely comprehensivepublication, covering in depth the 34 acarine families that containmites useful for the control of pest mites and insects, nematodesand weeds. In addition to providing information on each relevantacarine family, the book includes essential information on theintroduction, culture and establishment of acarine biocontrolagents, the effects of the host plants, agrochemicals andenvironmental factors on mites used in biological control anddiscusses commercial and economic considerations in theiruse. Mites are now used in various ways for biological control, witha growing number of species being sold commercially throughout theworld. The authors of this landmark publication, who have betweenthem a huge wealth of experience working with mites in biologicalcontrol programs, have put together a book that will for many yearsbe the standard reference on the subject. The book will be of great value to all those working in cropprotection and biological control both in research as well as incommercial operations, including acarologists, entomologists, integrated pest management specialists, agricultural and plantscientists. Libraries in all universities and researchestablishments where these subjects are studied and taught shouldall have copies on their shelves. Uri Gerson is at the Department of Entomology, Faculty ofAgricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, Hebrew University,Rehovot, Israel. Robert L. Book Synopsis Biodiversity Conservation and Utilization in a Diverse World by : Gbolagade Akeem Lameed
Download or read book Biodiversity Conservation and Utilization in a Diverse World written by Gbolagade Akeem Lameed and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book "Biodiversity Conservation and Utilization in a Diverse World" sees biodiversity as management and utilization of resources in satisfying human needs in multi-sectional areas including agriculture, forestry, fisheries, wildlife and other exhaustible and inexhaustible resources. Its value is to fulfill actual human preferences and variability of life is measured by amount of genetic variation available. In viewing diversity as an ultimate moral value, one is faced with a situation in environmental preservation in order to allow components of total diversity to flourish and constitute a threat to continuous existence and decrease total diversity. The overall importance described economic benefits from bio-diversity, though difficult to measure and varying, but are limited on a local scale, increase on a regional or national scale and become potentially substantial on a transnational or global scale.
