Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological Interconnections: Critical Readings on Ethics, Sustainability and Interspecies Communication in Literature and Culture argues that literature and cultural studies are vital tools for understanding and addressing ecological issues. This edited book of sixteen essays explores how literary texts and cultural iconography can highlight ecological ethics, promote sustainability, and enhance interspecies communication. By critiquing anthropocentric perspectives and emphasizing non-human ecologies, the book explores the importance of deep ecology and ecoprecarity in contemporary discourse. Divided into three sections—"Interspecies Communication and Intersection," "Eco-ethical Intersection and Responsibility," and "Towards Ecological Sustainability"—the essays advocate for a practical shift from theoretical considerations to active ecological commitment. The book demonstrates that literature can cultivate eco-consciousness and empathy, fostering sustainable coexistence. Through its interdisciplinary approach, this book provides a comprehensive understanding of the interconnectedness of human and non-human life, making it an indispensable resource for scholars, students, and eco-conscious individuals.

However, the reasons for that visitation are found in the non-material, non-economic values that parks offer to people: values that are cultural, therapeutic, scientific, spiritual, recreational, educational, and aesthetic/artistic. The Full Value of Parks is the first comprehensive analysis of these important, but intangible, values.

Book excerpt: There has always been an inherent tension in the Vedic system between the negative affirmative approaches, between life in the world and renunciation. The book explores the manner in which dharma and yoga harmonize the tensing between the inner and the outward. The book goes on explain how Vedic management, through the concepts of dharma and yoga, encourage peace and concord through selflessness and cooperative behavior and the sacrifice of the ego, opinions and strongly held beliefs so as to harmonize with fellow human beings. The Upanishad system which interiorize Vedic through the yogic way of meditation and contemplation is also examined. The book goes on the to delineate the concept of dharmic management as applied to social concerns and the polity. This is through an examination of the dhramashastras and the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The yogic system as elaborated by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita is studied to see its impact on managements. The conclusion reached is that Lord Sri Krishan makes management more an art than a science while also making the system flexible and creative. The normative Vedic management system was utilized by Gandhi to set up an organization that toppled one of the mightiest empires known to history. The manner in which this was done is also examined. Some reference form the latest management littérateur are also there and it is left to the reader to decide whether Vedic management is relevant today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this ground-breaking study the traditional Indian science of architecture and house-building,Vastu Vidya, is explored in terms of its secular uses, at the levels of both theory and contemporary practice. Vastu Vidya is treated as constituting a coherent and complete architectural programme, still of great relevance today. Chakrabarti draws on an impressive amount of textual material, much of it only available in Sanskrit, and presents several extremely valuable illustrations in support of the theories expounded. Each chapter deals with one architectural aspect, and chapters are divided into three sections. For each aspect, the first section explains the prescriptions of the traditional texts; the second section deals with the rather arbitrary use of that aspect by contemporary Indian architects trained in the western manner but striving to relate to Indian roots; while the last section in each chapter explores the selected use of that particular aspect by contemporary Vastu pundits, with their disregard for architectural idiom.

Book excerpt: Exploring a topic of vital and ongoing importance, Traditional Forest Knowledge examines the history, current status and trends in the development and application of traditional forest knowledge by local and indigenous communities worldwide. It considers the interplay between traditional beliefs and practices and formal forest science and interrogates the often uneasy relationship between these different knowledge systems. The contents also highlight efforts to conserve and promote traditional forest management practices that balance the environmental, economic and social objectives of forest management. It places these efforts in the context of recent trends towards the devolution of forest management authority in many parts of the world. The book includes regional chapters covering North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Australia-Pacific region. As well as relating the general factors mentioned above to these specific areas, these chapters cover issues of special regional significance, such as the importance of traditional knowledge and practices for food security, economic development and cultural identity. Other chapters examine topics ranging from key policy issues to the significant programs of regional and international organisations, and from research ethics and best practices for scientific study of traditional knowledge to the adaptation of traditional forest knowledge to climate change and globalisation.
