The objective is to support the development of the European Union’s product policy, more specifically the increased focus on environmental aspects and circular economy in the EU Ecodesign Directive. The project focuses on possible regulation of scarce, environmentally relevant, and critical raw materials. The study identifies current regulations, legislations, and standards and defines and recommends relevant policy options. The content of the study is based on input from stakeholders in combination with literature reviews. The outcome is an overview of potential policy measures that could be implemented within the European ecodesign framework, and other potential policy measures especially measures related to green public procurement.

The aesthetics of the design should meet with the overall sustainability: high quality, durability and smart assembly for refurbishing. The project is funded by the Nordic Working Group for Circular Economy (NCE) under the Nordic Council of Ministers. The project has been carried out by Viegand Maagøe A/S (Denmark) and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute (Sweden) in the period 20 October 2020 to 31 December 2021.A reference group with representatives from the Nordics has been established, who provided valuable input to the study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, companies around the world have deployed an arsenal of tools - including IP law, hardware design, software restrictions, pricing strategies, and marketing messages - to prevent consumers from fixing the things they own. While this strategy has enriched companies almost beyond measure, it has taken billions of dollars out of the pockets of consumers and imposed massive environmental costs on the planet. In The Right to Repair, Aaron Perzanowski analyzes the history of repair to show how we've arrived at this moment, when a battle over repair is being waged - largely unnoticed - in courtrooms, legislatures, and administrative agencies. With deft, lucid prose, Perzanowski explains the opaque and complex legal landscape that surrounds the right to repair and shows readers how to fight back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecodesign means integrating environmental factors into the design process of all types of products, from toys, packaging, household appliances to industrial products like compressors. It requires life cycle thinking, with the environmental impact minimized at all stages of the product cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to end of use. Ecodesign is also a key to success in the transition to a circular economy model. The ecodesign rules of thumb are a guide to develop products that fit in the circular economy. This unique book serves as a key guide for designers, organizations, governments, companies, or anybody else with an interest in a sustainable future, by addressing three main topics: First, ecodesign is explained for what it is and how it fits with the necessity for a sustainable planet. Second, ecodesign is shown to be a coherent and practical process with a plan and tools that can be used to provide solutions for the environmental challenges the world faces. Third, the impact of the ecodesign approach is elaborated for enterprises, governments, and consumers. Both legislation and consumer pressure for more sustainable goods and services require industry and academia to come up with meaningful solutions that consider economic, societal, and environmental aspects alike. This book provides the necessary clarity and tools to assess current products and support and inspire design of new ones to minimize the environmental impact and improve the circularity. Contents: * Necessity of Ecodesign * Emergence of Ecodesign and the Circular Economy Model * Design for X * Ecodesign Tools * Ecodesign in the Product Development Process * Stimulating Ecodesign * Ecodesign and Entrepreneurship * Ecodesign and Governance * Ecodesign and Consumers

Examining what happens in concrete instances of consultation, this investigation also chronicles a series of related issues such as environmental governance, policy implementation, and the better regulation framework. Via case studies and analysis, this investigation allows for a greater understanding of the interaction between the European Commission and interest groups.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital transformation has shaped a new landscape for companies and their customers, offering companies a wealth of data with which to develop customer knowledge. However, this evolution is just one of many transformations in customer marketing within an increasingly complex reality, thrown into turmoil by environmental and social changes. New frontiers in customer relations strategies are thus being drawn, some in new territories grounded in efforts to preserve scarce resources, while others are built on expectations of social responsibility. These profound societal changes also reveal darker frontiers, where companies have insufficient ethical considerations for vulnerable customers, or merely react to changes in legislation. New Frontiers of Customer Strategy offers practitioners, lecturers and students an up-to-date reflection on the role of customer relations now and in the future, to keep pace with environmental, digital, inclusive and ethical issues, as well as organizational governance.

These risks range in danger and should always be dealt with accordingly. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the dangers or how to prevent them and this is where most of the issues arise in information technology (IT). When computer users do not take security into account many issues can arise from that like system compromises or loss of data and information. This is an obvious issue that is present with all computer users. This book is intended to educate the average and experienced user of what kinds of different security practices and standards exist. It will also cover how to manage security software and updates in order to be as protected as possible from all of the threats that they face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the material life of information and its devices; of electronic waste in its physical and electronic incarnations; a cultural and material mapping of the spaces where electronics in the form of both hardware and information accumulate, break down, or are stowed away. Where other studies have addressed "digital" technology through a focus on its immateriality or virtual qualities, Gabrys traces the material, spatial, cultural and political infrastructures that enable the emergence and dissolution of these technologies. In the course of her book, she explores five interrelated "spaces" where electronics fall apart: from Silicon Valley to Nasdaq, from containers bound for China to museums and archives that preserve obsolete electronics as cultural artifacts, to the landfill as material repository. Digital Rubbish: A Natural History of Electronics describes the materiality of electronics from a unique perspective, examining the multiple forms of waste that electronics create as evidence of the resources, labor, and imaginaries that are bundled into these machines. Ranging across studies of media and technology, as well as environments, geography, and design, Jennifer Gabrys draws together the far-reaching material and cultural processes that enable the making and breaking of these technologies.
