Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes of Wisdom or Talmudic Sayings With Classic, Especially Latin, Parallelisms, Vol. 1 In presenting Talmud and Classics together, the object is not to throw the charge of plagiarism at any door, but to bring the Talmud nearer to the under standing of at least some of the many who, lacking all knowledge of the same, profanely disparage it. The beautiful form is not the chief boast of the Classics. They are at their noblest when glorifying some metaphysical or practical truth. Where that is absent they fail to charm us. Homer and Virgil, Plato and Cicero have no fascination in spite of their rhythmic and blossoming diction when they correct no error, improve no moral, clarify no idea, and elevate no truth. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.

Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Download or read book Jane Austen written by Mary DeForest and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truth universally established that Jane Austen knew neither Latin nor Greek. As a literary detective, Mary Margolies DeForest disputes this. In Austen's day, classically educated women were loathed. Austen wanted readers to know that she and her best characters had a classical education--just not in her lifetime! Unlike writers who paraded their educational credentials, Austen did not send modern readers diving into footnotes to translate a chunk of Greek or Latin. Instead, she revealed a classical education subtly but profoundly. As DeForest argues, a classical education shapes Austen's characters, their language, and their stories.

Book Synopsis New Perspectives on 2 Enoch by : Andrei Orlov
Download or read book New Perspectives on 2 Enoch written by Andrei Orlov and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Perspectives on 2 Enoch: No Longer Slavonic Only presents a collection of papers from the fifth conference of the Enoch Seminar. The conference re-examines 2 Enoch, an early Jewish apocalyptic text previously known to scholars only in its Slavonic translation, in light of recently identified Coptic fragments. This approach helps to advance the understanding of many key issues of this enigmatic and less explored Enochic text. One of the important methodological lessons of the current volume lies in the recognition that the Adamic and Melchizedek traditions, the mediatorial currents which play an important role in the apocalypse, are central for understanding the symbolic universe of the text. The volume also contains the recently identified Coptic fragments of 2 Enoch, introduced to scholars for the first time during the conference.
Download or read book Orientalism written by Edward W. Said and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking critique of the West's historical, cultural, and political perceptions of the East that is—three decades after its first publication—one of the most important books written about our divided world. "Intellectual history on a high order ... and very exciting." —The New York Times In this wide-ranging, intellectually vigorous study, Said traces the origins of "orientalism" to the centuries-long period during which Europe dominated the Middle and Near East and, from its position of power, defined "the orient" simply as "other than" the occident. This entrenched view continues to dominate western ideas and, because it does not allow the East to represent itself, prevents true understanding.
