Book excerpt: This study examines tales from The Metamorphoses by the Roman poet Ovid (43 BC-18 AD) and from The Lais by the French poet Marie de France (fl. mid-to late twelfth century) to explore a paradox: how can a vibrant, complex, and timeless vision be conveyed in convention-informed and time-bound language? Marie plays against Ovid’s tales to probe the dilemma, thereby echoing Ovid who does the same to the canonical literary monuments of his day. Both poets suggest that poetry can avoid the flattening effect of monumental canonizing not only by the creative use of literary echoes, but also by shifting perspectives on the conventional, which in turn, can encourage readers to see reflections of many stories in any given tale. Ovid and Marie suggest and encourage in this manner by presenting literary love’s topoi and traditional lovers from a variety of metaliterary perspectives, thereby eliciting active readerly memory as well as providing the opportunity to see the conventional afresh, activity that allows even canonical texts to become living memorials.

Book excerpt: From comic books to summer blockbusters, all people enjoy art in some form or another. However, few of us can effectively explain why certain books, movies, and songs resonate so profoundly within us. In Echoes of Eden, Jerram Barrs helps us identify the significance of artistic expression as it reflects the extraordinary creativity and unmatched beauty of the Creator God. Additionally, Barrs provides the key elements for evaluating and defining great art: (1) The glory of the original creation; (2) The tragedy of the curse of sin; (3) The hope of final redemption and renewal. These three qualifiers are then put to the test as Barrs investigates five of the world's most influential authors who serve as ideal case studies in the exploration of the foundations and significance of great art.

Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Nathan Shepherd has a great life traveling where the careers of his father, an investigator, and mother, a renowned violinist, take him ... until his parents are found murdered. Left with only a mirror and notes from his father's last case, Nathan goes into hiding at the remote country home of Tony, his father's college buddy, and Tony's teenage daughter, Kelly. The mysterious mirror must be a clue to what happened to his parents, and when images appear in it---people and things that don't exist---Nathan and Kelly painstakingly gather evidence. But the killers want the mirror too, and danger threatens the teens at every turn. As it becomes evident that Nathan's father had stumbled upon dark forces at work in the world, several questions arise. Could it be that the mirror is a portal to a parallel world? Could this technology be used for evil purposes? And could his parents still be alive, trapped in another dimension? Nathan and Kelly struggle to solve the mystery before they too become victims. This chilling, hair-raising adventure is jam-packed with action in a fantastical world where nothing is as it seems, and even mirrors tell lies.

Book excerpt: An exploration of echo not as simple repetition but as an agent of creative possibilities. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Amit Pinchevski proposes that echo is not simple repetition and the reproduction of sameness but an agent of change and a source of creation and creativity. Pinchevski views echo as a medium, connecting and mediating across and between disparate domains. He reminds us that the mythological Echo, sentenced by Juno to repeat the last words of others, found a way to make repetition expressive. So too does echo introduce variation into sameness, mediating between self and other, inside and outside, known and unknown, near and far. Echo has the potential to bring back something unexpected, either more or less than what was sent. Pinchevski distinguishes echo from the closely related but sometimes conflated reflection, reverberation, and resonance; considers echolalia as an active, reactive, and creative vocalic force, the launching pad of speech; and explores echo as a rhetorical device, steering between appropriation and response while always maintaining relation. He examines the trope of echo chamber and both destructive and constructive echoing; describes various echo techniques and how echo can serve practical purposes from echolocation in bats and submarines to architecture and sound recording; explores echo as a link to the past, both literally and metaphorically; and considers echo as medium using Marshall McLuhan’s tetrad.

Book excerpt: A survey of the history, forms, stylistic range, and use of mirrors in interior design. An ideal resource for anyone designing or re-creating period rooms or studying historical aesthetics, Mirrors looks at the ever-changing forms and uses of mirrors as major elements and points of emphasis in domestic interiors in the West. With a glimpse of their antecedents in classical antiquity and western Asia, the book traces a path from Louis XIV's Hall of Mirrors at Versailles and the royal and noble interiors that emulated it to mirrors in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European and New World interiors and high-chic applications in twentieth- and twenty-first-century rooms. Mirror frames and furniture incorporating mirrors are also considered.

The dictionary defines the word "Echo" as a sound that is a copy of another sound. The amazing thing about an echo is that it lasts longer than the original sound. You send out the sound, and then you hear it coming back at you as though someone else on the other side was duplicating your sound. The truth is there is someone else on the other side, and that is you. Everywhere you go, your reflection goes. You see! The universe is a mirror. Because the universe is a mirror, everywhere you go, your reflection is present with you. Because the universe is a mirror, it imitates everything that you do. An Echo is simply the reflection of the sound you make. This book shows you how to create the right sound to generate the right echo to attract good into your life and improve your thinking, character, and attitudes toward life.

Book excerpt: We all carry different degrees and varieties of psychological trauma. Our subconscious programming follows the impulses and beliefs we once formed in response to pain and suffering. When the subconscious becomes our compass to think and act, life becomes a repetition of patterns and a recycling of painful situations and unwanted experiences. Only through uncovering and understanding the traumas and irrational beliefs, can people free themselves from their mental barriers and transform their lives. The Reflections of Your Mirror, by author Iris Pitaluga, focuses on growth and transformation. It illustrates the constant battle between the ego and the higher self. Through real-life scenarios and personal anecdotes, she walks you through a journey of an understanding of your past, awareness of your present, and redesigning of your future. Iris Pitaluga teaches you that focusing on changing others isn't the answer to ending your suffering and conquering the life you dream of. It's only through self-reflection and self-improvement that your external reality becomes a reflection of the most authentic and best version of yourself.
