Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2023 Emily Toth Award for Best Single Work in Women's Studies “All-Electric” Narratives is the first in-depth study of time-saving electrical appliances in American literature. It examines the literary depiction of refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, oven ranges, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, toasters, blenders, standing and hand-held mixers, and microwave ovens between 1945, when the “all-electric” home came to be associated with the nation's hard-won victory, and 2020, as contemporary writers consider the enduring material and spiritual effects of these objects in the 21st century. The appropriation and subversion of the rhetoric of domestic electrification and time-saving comprises a crucial, but overlooked, element in 20th-century literary forms and genres including Beat literature, Black American literature, second-wave feminist fiction, science fiction, and postmodernist fiction. Through close-readings of dozens of literary texts alongside print and television ads from this period, Dini shows how U.S. writers have unearthed the paradoxes inherent to claims of appliances' capacity to “give back” time to their user, transport them into a technologically-progressive future, or “return” them to some pastoral past. In so doing, she reveals literary appliances' role in raising questions about gender norms and sexuality, racial exclusion and erasure, class anxieties, the ramifications of mechanization, the perils and possibilities of conformity, the limitations of patriotism, and the inevitable fallacy of utopian thinking-while both shaping and radically disrupting the literary forms in which they operated.

Book excerpt: Hi there, everyone, and welcome to the marvellous world of HISTORY TREE and The Wrinkles of Time, a delightful children’s book by the ever-imaginative Dandy Ahuruonye. This enchanting tale promises to whisk young readers away on a journey through the annals of history, filled with laughter, adventure, and a touch of magic. To begin, meet Saga Sycamore, the wise and kind tree who knows everything about history and can travel through time. Saga is not just any tree; he’s a storyteller extraordinaire, weaving tales as intricate as a spider’s web. “History is not just a series of dates and events,” Saga often says, “it’s the story of us all, told through the whispers of the leaves and the rustling of the wind.” Joining Saga are his ancient tree friends, each with their own unique personalities and quirks. There’s EpochElm, the grumpy old tree who has seen the rise and fall of many civilisations. “I’ve seen it all,” he grumbles, “from the pyramids to the moon landing. And let me tell you, nothing surprises me anymore!” Then there’s ChronoBark, the youngest and most adventurous tree, always getting into mischief. “Time travel is a piece of cake,” he boasts, “if you don’t mind a few bumps and bruises along the way!” But the real stars of the show are the exceptional children who join the trees on their time-travelling escapades. Together, they visit the dinosaurs, sail with pirates, and even have tea with emperors. “Learning history has never been this much fun!” exclaims one of the children. “It’s like living in a storybook!” HISTORY TREE and The Wrinkles of Time is not just an adventure; it’s a celebration of curiosity, friendship, and the joy of learning. Ahuruonye’s witty and poetic prose brings history to life, making it accessible and engaging for young readers. The book is filled with memorable quotes and highlights, such as: “The past is a treasure trove of stories, waiting to be discovered.” “Every wrinkle in time holds a secret, every leaf a tale.” “History is not just about what happened, but about who we are.” Parents, this book is a must-have for your child’s bookshelf. It’s educational, entertaining, and beautifully written. It encourages children to explore the world around them, to ask questions, and to see history as a living, breathing tapestry of stories. Plus, it’s packed with humour, poetry, and wit, making it a joy to read aloud. So why wait? Dive into the pages of HISTORY TREE and The Wrinkles of Time and let your child’s imagination soar. This is a book that promises to leave them laughing, learning, and longing for more. Get your copy today and embark on an unforgettable journey through the wrinkles of time!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every person has seen a tree and maybe planted or climbed one! In all world religions, various trees are considered sacred. Trees have the ability to help us reach wholeness if we learn their wisdom and integrate it into our lives. This abecedarian--a book whose contents are in alphabetical order--explores the spiritual growth that is possible by reflecting on the wisdom of woody plants, which help humans experience the divine. In these pages you can explore trees from Acacia to Zaqqum. For each of the forty entries, the author presents a text identifying the tree, a reflective study, a question for journaling or personal meditation, and a concluding prayer. Some trees you may have heard about, and some may be new to you. The spiritual life is enhanced by the trees that surround and share the earth with us while also disclosing the divine to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865, Indiana State University began classes as many other future regional state universities would: as a "normal school," a school that specialized in training teachers, usually in one- or two-year programs. By 1933, Indiana State had won the name Teachers College and had begun offering graduate-level education. In A History of Indiana State University, Dan Clark explores the history of Indiana State's institutional transformation against the backdrop of the amazing expansion of public education and the scope of higher education in the United States during this period. Starting with the origins of the normal school and the need for professional teachers to help construct the educational infrastructure of Indiana, Clark examines how the faculty and students pushed the school to conform to increasingly popular traditional collegiate ideals, broadening their curriculum and student extracurricular life (athletics and Greek life), until by the 1920s Indiana State had transformed itself into a teachers college. A History of Indiana State University offers an invaluable guide to the history of this beloved Indiana institution, and details the underappreciated impact that normal schools had in providing an educational opportunity to less privileged aspiring students.
