Book excerpt: Bible-reading is more of an art than a science. The Bible is a story, not a lexicon of systematic theological definitions. With this in mind, The Through New Eyes Bible Commentary Series builds on the foundational Biblical-theology work of James B. Jordan and other like-minded scholars in bringing you a set of commentaries that will help you read, teach and preach through the Bible while picking up on the rich symphonic themes and the literary symbolism of the Scriptures. Because they are written for thoughtful Christians without being overly academic, these commentaries will serve as valuable resources for family worship, Sunday school or Bible studies.

Book excerpt: Through the ages, the book of Ecclesiastes (Qoheleth) has elicited a wide variety of interpretations. Its status as wisdom literature is secure, but its meaning for the religion of the Hebrew Bible and its heirs has been a matter of much debate. The debate has swung from claiming orthodoxy for the book to arguing that the message intended by its author is heterodox, in its entirety. There are a number of passages in the book that present difficulties for any comprehensive approach to the work. Martin Shields here fully acknowledges the heterodox nature of Qoheleth's words but offers an orthodox reading of the book as a whole through the eyes of the author of the epilogue. After a survey of attitudes regarding wisdom in the Hebrew Bible itself, which serves as an orientation to the monograph as a whole, Shields provides a detailed study of the epilogue (Qoh 12:9-14), which he believes is the key to the reading of the remainder of the book. He then addresses various problematic texts in the book in light of this perspective, arguing that the book could originally have functioned as a warning to students against joining a wisdom movement that existed at the time of the book's composition. Qoheleth is presented as a true adherent of this movement, and the divergence of his words from the theism presented in the rest of the Hebrew Bible becomes the basis of the epilogue's critique. Finally, Shields proposes a historical context in which just this scenario may have arisen, showing that the desire of the writer of the epilogue is to correct a wayward wisdom tradition.

Book excerpt: What if it is death that teaches us how to truly live? Keeping the end in mind shapes how we live our lives in the here and now. Living life backward means taking the one thing in our future that is certain—death—and letting that inform our journey before we get there. Looking to the book of Ecclesiastes for wisdom, Living Life Backward was written to shake up our expectations and priorities for what it means to live "the good life." Considering the reality of death helps us pay attention to our limitations as human beings and receive life as a wondrous gift from God—freeing us to live wisely, generously, and faithfully for God's glory and the good of his world.

Book excerpt: With references to Old Testament gleaning laws and to the concept of the kinsman-redeemer, the small book of Ruth contains numerous hints critical to understanding how Yahweh brings rest to the women in the story and ultimately to His bride, the Church, through Jesus Christ, the Greater Boaz and kinsman-redeemer. In this commentary, Pastors Uri Brito and Rich Lusk tease out the nuances of Old and New Testament typology and show how the book of Ruth fits in Yahweh's redemption of His people, the land and the world. Whether discussing levirate law or the place of grace and good works in relation to Yahweh's covenant faithfulness, this commentary is sure to bring renewed interest in the study of Ruth for pastors and parishioners alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T. S. Eliot has remarked that "preacher" and "prophet" are odious terms (despite the fact that Ecclesiastes, "the preacher," is the name assigned to Solomon as author of one of the most haunting books of the Old Testament; and the prophets are inspired). But it is clear that the Bishop's newspaper articles (except satirical and narrative pieces) were very often conceived as sermons; an intention which affected not only their matter but their style. One is surprised to note how many of the columns might be delivered with professional grace from a pulpit or rostrum, with hardly a word changed. The language is sonorous; the pace of the argument is deliberate; the humor builds patiently and claims the indulgence of the hearer. Almost always one senses an audience-the writing is public utterance; seldom the colloquy of two persons; never the intense whisper of the poet meditating alone. - From the Brief Life Archbishop Dwyer was a sower not a reaper. He lived the fulfilling but also agonizing life of a sower, who puts the seed into the good earth, but only those with vision can foretell the harvest. The sower always is a lonely man. He does a labor, which others will reap. In spite of the gallery of adoring friends and the many admiring readers of his articles I think he too was a lonely man. When those with lesser vision thought that he was attacking the wrongs of the present-so he had to be in their eyes a conservative, if we want to use labels-he was prophesying about a future which very few had the clarity of mind to foretell. Yet, so shortly after his death the new era of culture, a new age of man already stands on the threshold of human development and many started to see its contours. The world which he was pointing toward is fast approaching. He was an all important link in the chain of human events in pilgrimage toward the future. He could, when the rest of humanity could not yet say: Lift up your eyes and see! The fields are shining for harvest. - A Sketch from Memory, Isabel Piczek

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I've been a philosopher for all my adult life and the three most profound books of philosophy that I have ever read are Ecclesiastes, Job, and Song of Songs." These are the opening lines of Kreeft's Three Philosophies of Life. He reflects that there are ultimately only three philosophies of life and each one is represented by one of these books of the Bible-life is vanity; life is suffering; life is love. In these three books Kreeft shows how we have Dante's great epic The Divine Comedy played out, from Hell to Purgatory to Heaven. But it is an epic played out in our hearts and lives, here and now. Just as there is movement in Dante's epic, so there is movement in these books, from Ecclesiates to Job, from Job to Song of Songs. Love is the final answer to Ecclesiastes' quest, the alternative to vanity, and the true meaning of life. Finally, Kreeft sees in these books the epitome of theological virtues of faith, hope and love and "an esstential summary of the spiritual history of the world".
