Book excerpt: This book shows how current and future research on the social history of the Balkans can be integrated into a broader European framework. The contributions look at a range of methodological and empirical issues, and the theme that links the various studies is that of the contrasting, yet, at the same time, entangled ideas of the Balkans as a "mental map" and of Southeast Europe as an "historical region." Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, the Balkans was rocked by the collapse of communism and the violent breakup of Yugoslavia. Yet the last decade has seen Southeastern Europe transform into one of the most dynamic emerging markets in the world. In Search of the Balkan Recovery tracks Yugoslavia's political evolution from conflict to cooperation and the role of growing investment and trade opportunities in facilitating this recovery. Cviic and Sanfey read the history of Yugoslavia's violent disintegration against similar events in Bulgaria, Romania, and Albania. They critically examine the involvement of the international community and contrast it against the procrastination of European leaders and the more constructive "soft power" approach of the European Union, among other institutions. They also trace the recovery of Balkan economic prospects in recent years and argue that, despite our current economic crisis, the downturn in the region's economic well-being is likely to be temporary.

Book excerpt: This book brings together articles based on papers given at the “Scandinavia and the Balkans: Cultural Interactions with Byzantium and Eastern Europe in the First Millennium” conference, held on 25 and 26 September 2012 at the New Bulgarian University, Sofia. The conference was designed to pave the way for studies on the connections between the Balkans and Scandinavia to develop within a broader context, to promote the successes of the researchers who have dedicated their efforts to this scholarly field, and to articulate the importance of this topic to scholarly investigations, education and society. The topic of this book is one that has rarely been discussed in academic studies, while it is almost unknown in social and cultural contexts. While it may seem to deal with a rather narrow historical frame, remote from today’s reality – the relationship between two distant geographical and cultural areas in the past – in fact, the focus, or rather multiple foci on this topic offered here explore a number of aspects of the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages in the Balkans and Scandinavia.

Book excerpt: This study, which is an updated, extended, and revised version of the out-of-print 1993 edition, reassesses the traditional stereotype of the place of the Balkans in the model of the European family in the nineteenth century on the basis of new source material and by synthesizing existing research. The work first analyzes family structure and demographic variables as they appear in population registers and other sources, and the impact of these findings on theoretical syntheses of the European family pattern. On most features, such as population structure, marriage and nuptiality, birth and fertility, death and mortality rates, family and household size and structure, as well as inheritance patterns, the Balkans show an enormous deal of internal variety. This variability is put in a comparative European context by matching the quantifiable results with comparable figures and patterns in other parts of Europe. The second section of the book is a contribution to the long-standing debate over the zadruga, the complex, collective, joint or extended family in the Balkans. Finally, the book considers ideology and mythology and the ways it has adversely affected scholarship on the family, and broadly on population history.

The task split between the various scholarly disciplines into the fields of Balkan studies and Near (Middle) East studies has resulted in dividing a shared history into various sub-histories. This book reunites these isolated histories, opening up completely new historical perspectives. (Series: Studies on South East Europe - Vol. 12)
