Book Synopsis Eastern European Railways in Transition by : Henry Jacolin
Download or read book Eastern European Railways in Transition written by Henry Jacolin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, railway lines spread rapidly across Europe, linking the continent in ways unimaginable to previous generations. By the beginning of the twentieth century the great cities of the continent were linked by a complex and extensive rail network. Yet this high-point of interconnectivity, was abruptly cut-off after 1945, as the Cold War built barriers - both physical and ideological - between east and west. In this volume, leading transport history scholars take a fresh look at this situation, and the ramifications it had for Europe. As well as addressing the parallel development of railways either side of the Iron Curtain, the book looks at how transport links have been reconnected and reconfigured in the twenty years since the reunification of Europe. In particular, it focuses upon the former communist countries and how they have responded to the challenges and opportunities railways offer both nationally and internationally. Including contributions from historians, researchers, policy makers, representatives of railway companies and railway museum staff, the essays in this collection touch upon a rich range of subjects. Divided into four sections: 'The Historical Overview', 'Under Russian Protection', After the Fall of the Iron Curtain, and 'The Heritage of Railways in Eastern Europe' the volume offers a broadly chronological introduction to the issue, that provides both a snap-shot of current debates and a starting point for further research. It concludes that in an era of increased globalisation and interconnectivity - and despite the rise of air and road transport and virtual methods of communication - railways still have a crucial role to play in the development of a prosperous and connected Europe.
Book Synopsis European Trains and Trams by : Don Benn

Book excerpt: This little photo album is the second of a series of booklets covering trains and trams in Europe and is self published via Createspace. I was accompanied on all trips, often by one of my brothers and sometimes by like minded colleagues from work. I made five trips to the German Democratic Republic ; in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1983. It was an interesting place to visit and could be very cheap if west marks were exchanged for east marks on the black market. Hotels had to be booked in advance via Berolina Travel and persistence could result in being allowed to stay in hotels in the smaller towns such as the excellent Wilderman at Annaberg -Bucholz, where free enterprise was evident long before unification. These trips included visits to all nine of the remaining narrow gauge lines. The first booklet in this series 'East German Narrow Gauge Lines-Part One' includes photographs from five of those lines, taken in May 1981 and May 1983. This booklet, Part Two, covers all nine of the lines with pictures taken by my faithful Pentax KX 35 mm camera using Kodak colour slide film which has stood the test of time very well. I only visited some lines once but others on a number of occasions and the Harz System every time we went to the DDR. This resulted in a large number of images and so another booklet, Part Three, will be produced concentrating on the Harz lines. I briefly revisited the two Ostsee lines in 1999 and a couple of shots are included.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fast-growing East European economies, a parti cularly important role falls to the transport systems that are called upon to move an ever-rising volume of goods and a con stantly increasing number of passengers. Gaining new insights into the problems that face those transport systems, into their achievements, and into some still unanswered questions is therefore highly interesting and--in terms of world experience --essential. The transportation systems of Eastern Europe operate within a centrally planned environment, but they serve dif ferent types of economies, from highly advanced East Germany and Czechoslovakia to the still industrializing Romania and Bulgaria. They have to satisfy fairly diversified transport needs: they operate within systems that have adopted different scales of political and economic priorities and different methods and forms of achieving them politically--from the faithful Soviet shadow-state of East Germany to the indepen dence-seeking Romania and Yugoslavia and, economically, from the traditionally strict authoritarian form of Romania that seeks industrialization and state power to the New Economic Mechanism of Hungary and the decentralization of Yugoslavia. Also, unlike the Soviet Union, the East European transport sys tems cover relatively small territories whose external connec tions differ from one another in scope and in modes. In addi tion, the transport systems of Eastern Europe have been called upon to accomplish feats of steeply rising performance with x infrastructures and equipment supported by miserly allocations.

This book was released on 2000-04-22 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yet there isn't a train goes by all day But I hear its whistle shrieking.... Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take, No matter where it's going. —Edna St. Vincent Millay, "Travel" "Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take" is a collection of stories about favorite train journeys by an inveterate railway enthusiast and train traveler. A half century career as an engineer, Naval officer, and university administrator took Bill Middleton to almost every part of the globe, and everywhere he took with him an abiding interest in railways, and a notebook and camera to record his experiences. His North American journeys have included experiences as diverse as the long journey north through Manitoba to polar bear country on Hudson Bay, a trip to Minnesota's Mesabi Range to haul a boatload of iron ore to Lake Superior behind a giant Yellowstone articulated steam locomotive, and the trip between Costa Rica's Atlantic and Pacific coasts by narrow gauge railway. His European travels have ranged from a Pullman seat on the crack London-Paris Golden Arrow to the slow trip across Thrace on one of the last runs of the celebrated Simplon-Orient Express. In Asia he traveled through the Toros Mountains of Turkey on the famous Istanbul-Baghdad Toros Express, experienced modern high-speed railroading in the cab of Japan's Bullet Train, and rode to Asia's highest mountain east of the Himalayas on the little trains of Taiwan's Ali Shan Forestry Railway.
