Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the 830s; a time of warring Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, declining monastic standards and outbursts of fear of divine retribution. Elmstow Minster – a community of nuns in the Kingdom of the East Angles – has been recently established to atone for the execution of a young prince. The minster is torn between two camps – pious nuns and those who have no intention of giving up their worldly ways. These ungodly women are supported by powerful, degenerate donors, who treat Elmstow as an aristocratic whoring nest. The abbess of Elmstow has been humiliated by the influence wielded over her minster by these rich patrons and plots revenge. Two naked bodies are discovered, hanged together. A young, introspective priest, Father Eadred, is sent to Elmstow to spy on the declining standards and against his wishes becomes entangled in the task of uncovering the guilty. He challenges the traditional approach of using an ordeal of hot iron to identify the culprits. Instead, he has the novel idea of exploring the evidence. He faces significant opposition, including an attempt on his life. Eadred is befriended by a hermit monk who becomes the only person with whom he can talk about his detection. Further murders will take place. As Eadred moves closer to the truth the situation is thrown into further disarray when the minster is attacked by the neighbouring kingdom. Can they be saved and the final culprit revealed?

Book excerpt: Essex - the witch hunting county - is especially rich in traditions, legends, dialect and stories that have been handed down through the ages. It is these traditions that are gathered together in this volume and whose origins and meanings are explored to create a sense of how the customs of the past have influenced the ways of the present. This fully illustrated study of folklore rediscovers those traditions that have either vanished, been ignored or hidden away. There are tales of dragons and warriors, literary folk and legendary folk, but always at the heart of Essex folklore are the traditional beliefs, stories, events and customs of the common people. Daily life itself contained numerous beliefs and maxims, omens and superstitions, as well as being full of music, dance and song.

Book excerpt: The twin fascinations of death and villainy will always hold us in their grim but thrilling grip. In Foul Deeds and Suspicious Deaths in Suffolk the chill is brought close to home as each chapter investigates the darker side of humanity in cases of murder, deceit and pure malice committed over the centuries in this part of East Anglia. From crimes of passion to opportunistic killings and coldly premeditated acts of murder, the full spectrum of criminality is recounted here. The traditionally rural nature of Suffolk creates isolated, inward looking communities with their own peculiar customs and practices. While this is one of the more endearing aspects of country life, it can also spawn narrow-mindedness and parochialism that leads to conflict - and occasionally even to death. In this collection of grisly crime stories Mark Mower takes us on a journey through the darker side of Suffolk folklore, with tales of poisoning, grave robbing, stabbing, shooting and larceny. On the way we meet highwaymen, cut-throats, murderous lovers, homicidal relatives, pirates and purveyors of human flesh. The dramas he describes are often played out in the most commonplace of circumstances, but others are so odd as to be stranger than fiction. SALES * Gripping account of the sinister side of Suffolk's history * Murder, robbery, treason, conspiracy, executions, crimes of passion * Vivid insight into criminal acts and the criminal mind AUTHOR Mark Mower is a management consultant and an expert on public sector affairs. He also runs a company called East Anglian Murder Mysteries Limited and writes murder mystery plays. His first book, Suffolk Tales of Mystery & Murder, was published in 2006.

Book excerpt: Joanna Elphick was born in East Anglia but grew up in the heart of London, where she obtained an LLB (Hons) in law and a postgraduate diploma in forensic science whilst hobnobbing with members of the Kray gang and joyriding a double-decker bus before returning to her Norfolk roots to lecture in law. She created the Norfolk Adult Education Access to Law Program during her time travelling around the country, giving extremely popular, albeit gruesome, evening lectures in witchcraft, smugglers, highwaymen, and local criminal history. She currently teaches law, criminology, and psychology at Dereham Sixth Form College in Norfolk. Fascinating historical tales of murder, mystery, and suspense abound in Murderous East Anglia, a tome of thriller short stories documenting some of the darkest instances of true crime to ever plague the miry fens of Norfolk and Suffolk. The criminal intent behind these nefarious deeds stem from places deep within the human psyche, places of greed and jealousy that will send a shiver down your spine. So journey down the rabbit hole of crime and punishment, if you dare, and discover the secret history of a region with more suspicious deaths per capita than central London. Among these historical tales meets the evil Bootlace Beach Killer; the Monster of Norwich; executioners; saucy maids; and heartless philanderers, such as Blomfield Rush and William Corder. In all these true crime stories, echoes of the past resound into the present, whether it be through the ghostly footsteps of the helpless victims or in the amendments made to laws of crime and punishment as a result of these tragedies.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of the Charles Lenox series of mysteries, including the Agatha-nominated novel A Beautiful Blue Death, comes a riveting short story of death and detection on the East End. It's the end of winter 1865 when Lenox agrees to investigate the death of Phil Jigg, a beloved neighborhood regular, found strangled on Great St. Andrews Street. In a case that takes him through the noisy vendors and pickpockets, the rough-and-tumble back alleys and local pubs of the Seven Dials, Lenox looks for answers in a place that couldn't feel more foreign from his West End home—and where his presence is anything but welcome. The answer comes in the person of someone so ruthless and brutal that those who could help Lenox are terrified into silence. A whodunit filled with the kind of brooding atmosphere that led Library Journal to remark, "Readers of Anne Perry should be snatching up Finch's books and clamoring for more" (starred review of A Stranger in Mayfair), this is a delightfully vivid addition to the Charles Lenox series.

Book excerpt: Lincolnshire is England’s second-largest county–and one of the least well-known. Yet its understated chronicles, unfashionable towns and undervalued countryside conceal fascinating stories, and unique landscapes: its Wolds are lonely and beautiful, its towns characterful; its marshlands and dynamic coast are metaphors of constant change. From plesiosaurs to Puritans, medieval ghosts to eighteenth-century explorers, poets to politicians, and Vikings to Brexit, this marginal county is central to England’s identity. Canute, Henry IV, John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford all called Lincolnshire home. So did saints, world-famed churchmen and reformers–Etheldreda, Gilbert, Guthlac and Hugh, Robert Grosseteste, John Wycliffe, John Cotton, John Foxe and John Wesley–as well as Isaac Newton, Joseph Banks, John Harrison and George Boole. Lincolnshire explorers went everywhere: John Smith to Jamestown, George Bass and Matthew Flinders to Australia, and John Franklin to a bitter death in the Arctic. Artists and writers have been inspired–including Byrd, Taverner, Stukeley, Stubbs, Eliot and Tennyson–while Thatcher wrought neo-liberalism. Extraordinary architecture testifies to centuries of both settlement and unrest, from Saxon towers to sky-piercing spires; evocative ruined abbeys to the wonder of the Cathedral. And in between is always the little-known land itself–an epitome of England, awaiting discovery.
